Dabol's ability to alter his view on Offense !!!
-
Daboll was saddled with below average talent at QB and young receivers. The Browns had to run the ball, everyone and his brother knew they were going to run the ball and they ran it down everyone's throat in the month of December..Credit where credit is due. People put way too much credence into play calling in the NFL, its every fans expertise. Have you ever noticed fans talk about play calling on offense and players on defense.Why..Because the average NFL fan really doesn't understand defenses and coverages in the NFL. If you have talented skill players and a slightly above average QB your ability to score increases dramatically in the NFL. If DelHomme plays half way decent you'll see. Play calling WAY over rated.
-
I remember Franco Harris getting dumped to the turf by the Browns way back...
because the Browns knew he was coming.
Play calling is HUGE, keeping defenses guessing is a very big part of a versatile successful defense.
You can't be predictable without having invested a lot into a very, very solid offensive line.
I'd rather have the best of both worlds - an excellent offensive line, smart qb etc, and play calling
that plays on the expectations of the defense just when they think they have you figured out.

based on the situation and the defense he expects to see the OC is going to call the play thats most likely to work in that situation against that defense. Then the QB has to get the defense to show there hand, by hard counts and putting guys into motion. Based on what the QB reads, he then audibles to the best play. If we audible to a run play when the boxed is stacked is that being predictable or is the QB doing a poor job of getting the offense into the best play to succed. Like wise when you hard count and you see guys leaning backwards, that tells you there dropping into coverage, so what do you do? You run it were there retreating. Now if you dont make your reads at the line of scrimmage and there dropping back or stacking the box and you dont make the adjustment because you didnt make the reads, thats were you become predictable.

I'm not too worried about this. I'm sure that if Daboll doesn't take strides to show he's the guy he will be gone by the end of the year and with Holmgren here now I think the job would be an appealing one to good coaching talent.

Two years ago, everyone in NY was whining about Brian Schottenheimer. Last year, he was everyone's darling. I thought the offensive playcalling in the last five games was very good and earlier in the season there was no "go to" guy on offense that he could trust. No one was playing that well.
I agree with peterbell that everyone bashes offensive playcalling and defensive players. It's an over-rated gripe.

Well Daboll lost 30 pounds of weight during the offseason, so lets see if he can take that weight he lost and beef up his playbook! I figure anyone willing to learn and those willing to try new things should continue to get better in their profession. Having an expert of the WestCoast Offense on board also won't hurt a thing. What i liked about Daboll last year was his willingness to keep on working , trying to find something which worked for us , (changing up the offense when BQ was brought back in with the no huddle) attempting to play to DA's strengths and so on. I think he can do it but if he doesn't, as we are well aware, there is always someone lurking in the wings waiting for a job.
We will run the football a lot though. As of right now, it seems that is what our team is built to do well. Sort of like Tennessee Titan football. (just need someone to pretend their Chris Johnson now)

young team with a new scheme, rookie playmakers, aging vets, a #1 TE with bricks for hands, instability at the QB position,...that's a lot for anyone to have to overcome, let alone an OC in his very first year taboot. in his defense, Daboll has exceeded expectations in every NFL role he's had so far.
i'm not aware of whether there was a lack of creativity/imagination on Daboll's part or simply a matter of play-calling-redundancy cuz that's all the players could handle and actually execute, but imo his play-calling improved significantly as the season went on.
maybe the players showed enough growth he could open up the playbook a little more. don't know, and we may never find that out. good chance it was probably growing pains for both.
but...if Daboll's history is any indication, they will build on the experience of last year and should be able to hit the ground running this year after having a full year together. i'll give him credit for the fact he's still here and wait to see what they do before i get worried.

The lowest rated player in the NFL was probably an all american somewhere before joining the pros.... They're all athletes....
A good coordinator creates matchups utilizing what he has and puts his players in a position to succeed....
Has Cribbs ever thrown a pass out of the WildDawg?? Have we ever run a reverse out of the WildDawg????
When the defense knows whats coming, they'll stop you 99% of the time....
A good coordinator keeps them guessing..........
Peace

not disagreeing necessarily but you could have used a better example than Cribbs, T. Dawg.A good coordinator creates matchups utilizing what he has and puts his players in a position to succeed....

JC had the option to throw on every one of those WildDawg plays and the reason he didn't had nothing to do with the play-calling and everything to do with Cribbs feeling like he had to put the entire team on his shoulders and win the game himself. not selfishly, just trying to "will the win" by himself (actually that might still be selfish in many books lol-slippery slope).
he said it himself numerous times well before the end of the season "they all know i'm keeping it, but they can't stop me". he even challenged opposing D's to try to stop him and they couldn't. if they could've he probably woulda threw it more but they didn't so it was what it was. it may not work as well this year but it definitely worked last.
When the defense knows whats coming, they'll stop you 99% of the time....
that's a pretty damn big 1%.
of NFL ball carriers with an average of 100 carries or more Josh Cribbs currently holds like the 4th or 5th best average ALL TIME with 6.9 yards per carry. did i mention that's all time?

it seemed to me last year first and foremost the Browns just ran plays they could actually execute>>>even if it meant running the same play 5X per game and even if the fans might accuse Daboll of not being an "exotic play-caller". whatever. let's hope it's in the rear view now.
-
Seems to me the last 4 teams we played were not in the upper echelon of defensive teams....
Cribbs and the defense beat Pittsburgh not our run it down your throat offense....
This is the NFL--If the other team knows whats coming more often than not they will stop the play (99% is a figure of speach not an EXACT number).....
A one dimensiomal team may be a good team (Fouts & the chargers for example) but normally they don't win the whole thing....
Peace

we're definitely not going to surprise anyone with running the ball, that's for sure.

if everyone's ready for us this year, which i believe they will be, and Cribbs is still successful 7 out of ten times then that probably will be about 1%. so you're still in it.

if we can win games just running the ball again this year i'll be really impressed. to have that ability in your pocket for late November and after is really what you need in the AFCN for that last push before the playoffs. that's pretty ideal. to have a nice passing component to compliment that would really be damn formidable in this division.
the more i think about this article the more i realize how important it is for our passing identity to surface and start representing asap. i remember an interview where Daboll once said something about it being a copy-cat league and how he was going to mostly use the popular and successful passing plays-of-the-day. for whatever reason that philosophy sucked at putting points up so hopefully the WR core got something else out of the experience.
because of the tools he now has to work with and the potential for success the Browns could have with a WCO philosophy, i think the meetings with Gil Haskell are crucial to helping him develop the passing game and offensive identity in general. without it this team will never get close to contending.
the other three used to be more balanced but i see the Bengals and rats passing a lot this year against us, testing our secondary. the puke has average running lately and they are minus santonio and big rapist for 6 so i don't see them doing much the first half of the season so maybe they'll be out of it. if we win more games than expected and can still run over all 3 of them late in the season we could actually get in this year.
getting the passing game firing on all cylinders from the jump is the only way they could do it though. it doesn't need to be dominant, but just a touch more than competent. just enough to preserve the running game for when they really need it.

If your hinting at...playoffs... than mangini job is safe for sure. us improving is the first step playoffs down the line is expected, but this early. its not impossible since we could very well be on a 6 game winning streak going into baltimore in week 3.
and i just have to do it PLAYOFFS...PLAYOFFS
