Time to get realistic. We are very thin on offense. WR is a real weakness. Our D was quite bad last year but could improve drammatically. We are thin at RB. We have a QB shuffle going on with mediocre DelHomme, learning McCoy and the question mark Wallace.

The schedule is brutal and Baltimore and Cincy will be better than last year. Pittsburgh will have Ben both times we play them. Our own division has three winning teams in it not counting us. The rest of the schedule is brutal.

8-8 would be a real good season. Expecting more is living in dream world.

I like what is happening but it is going to take more than this year to turn it around

And rogers is useless and we should trade the old fat lazy gassed one

Geez I am sick of people hating on Rogers. I am excited to see what he can do with Rubin in the middle. If nothing else, Rogers blocks FG and PATs like no other. Besides his idiotic gun incident, I don't see any reason to hate him...

Anyway, regardless what record we end up with this year, I just want to be competitive in most games. If we go 7-9 or 8-8, but play hard in 4 or 5 losses, I see it as a solid season. I just want consistency/progress...

Dude, relax. It's Rich. He hates everyone except Paul Brown, Jim Brown, Stan, Zombo, and maybe Ghoolie.

Rich, travel safe and lighten up on Rogers.

    Bengals - L

    Out of Division games

    Tampa_Bay-W

    Carolina-W

    Miami-W

Yes, we beat you last year with an abysmal passing game, and sacked crapshitburger 8 times. This offseason we have upgraded at nearly every position and you...well haven't.

Upgraded? Your upgrades wouldn't start for the Steelers. It's one thing to upgrade from the bottom. It's something different to upgrade to a level of football relevance. There are maybe 3 players on your entire roster that would start for the Steelers and two are on the offensive line. The Browns also beat the Steelers on a terrible skid, one which we bounced back from a little to late. The defense simply couldn't hold a 4th quarter lead to save it's life for those six games and a loss to the Browns was the result. Remind me, what was your record last season and what was ours? The Steelers are talent laden, the browns "Well not so much"

lol oh the comedy this message board brings.

    lol

And we'll see. Everyone here is puffing up their chests and talking a confident game but when week 6 approaches everyone here is going to be nice and tight lipped because the aftermath if your predictions are wrong is going to be swift and f.ucking harsh. Pittsburgh is only going to be better and Big Ben is in the best shape of his career. Supposedly he hasn't hand a single pass hit the ground so far this training camp and everything is on a rope. He's also not going to get six and there are rumors floating around it could be less than 4.

I can't wait that's all I know because the excuses will be FLYING around that dead horse and I'm going to enjoy every minute of it.

  • This topic made me lol.

  • mikeyP72 said:

Honestly though, Homo, we really have less to prove. You are the 'proven' team right now. There are way more expectations on your team than ours... If we lose, eh, it's more or less expected. Like in '07 and at the end of last year, anything can happen when despair is mixed with desire and hard-work.

We'll see you week 6, hopefully your squad is as stout as you think, I've heard other people worried down in Pittsburgh this off-season. And hopefully our formula for success hasn't been another waste of time, shot in the dark as we've seen for the past 10 years or so.

Everything that's happening in Browns town is positive right now... Whether that translates into wins and success on the field THIS season remains to be seen. But admit it, losing to us last year hurt your guys pride a little...right big guy? Maybe a little little? 😉

lol maybe a little, little. Honestly things were pretty low at that point so when we did lose to the Browns most people had a "fvck it" mentality and it was almost expected. I was not at all confident going in to that game because our defense in the 4th quarter had been playing so poorly. If the loss had occurred at the beginning of that stretch I'm sure it would have had more of a effect. However because it was the final straw in the losing streak we couldn't get much lower.

As far as people this off-season being worried is concerned it's the camp that thinks Ben's suspension is going to be a ball breaker. I simply don't think it will be and others have made a huge deal out of the Santonio trade but I believe Mike Wallace really steps up, especially after last season. Emmanuel Sander is also supposedly really impressing this camp, so much so that he may get significant playing time week one. I'm not worried about the Steelers but there are certainly people that are...two camps in Pittsburgh right now. The optimists are those that still stand behind Ben. The doom and gloomers are the opposite. Eventually everyone will come around but I expect their play to speak for itself. I'm glad everyone is sleeping on the Steelers.

  • mikeyP72 said:

As much as I despise Ben he is pretty good. His controversy and suspension are not positives, hopefully he can straighten all his sh!t out or it might get ugly. Especially without Santonio anymore, will Wallace step up as a capable #2?

Wallace torched starting DB's all of last season. He'll more than step up and apparently based on training camp reports, Sanders our 3rd round pick is Wallace but he's better after the catch. He's really making a case for starting level playing time when week one kicks off. He's making circus catches all over the field and the buzz is he's a steal in the 3rd, much like Wallace was a steal last year. The offense will be potent this year and the defense will be punishing. People sleeping on the Steelers are going to be in for a RUDE awakening. Mark my words.

  • Mark my words my ass..............

This from a troll who stated that Jim Brown couldn't make it in todays NFL...

    No credibility, just all bullshit....

Oh by the way, Cleveland 13 Pittsburgh 6------deal with it......................

Its alot easier to get open when your the #3 than when your the #1, he was being covered by nickelbacks and safety's now he'll be against teams top corners and double coverage.

He wasn't. I'll try and dig up the statistics but more often than not he was going up against the oppositions number 1 or number 2 and there were stats compiled recently to prove it. Mike as far as Tomlin is concerned he's put his stamp on this team and his drafted players are starting to contribute. Bill Cowher has nothing to do with winning after he's gone just like Noll had nothing to do with Cowher winning after he was gone. Yes they were/are players drafted by previous coaches but they are no longer present doing any sort of coaching. It's Tomlin's team and they will continue to win under Tomlin.

Daddy bull I don't recall saying anything overly detrimental about Jim Brown, I think you have me confused with someone else. I may have contributed to a argument but I don't believe I started one and putting Brown in his prime back in to the league would certainly limit his success. The NFL is a different breed these days. It's bigger, faster, stronger, more. He wouldn't be nearly as fast in comparison and certainly wouldn't run around defenses like they were standing still. Jim Brown would still be good but he'd in no way be anywhere near as dominant. And I have dealt with it. We finished 9-7 last year? How did the Browns finish? "Deal with it"

  • The Browns finished with 4 wins in a row and BEAT the Steelser 13 - 6 eliminating them from the playoffs---deal with it....

Jim Brown was among the greatest atheletes to ever compete in the NFL... This is a recognized fact by almost every football authority... Never lifted a weight or took a roid and would dominate in todays game as he did when he played.... Super star atheletes are a special breed regardless of what era they played in... Wallace Won’t Be Facing Much New in 2010

Posted on July 19, 2010 by JJ

In another season, Mike Wallace would be considered the key to the 2010 Steelers’ hopes.

But in an offseason where Ben Roethlisberger has been slapped with a six-game suspension and Willie Colon has popped his Achilles’ tendon, all of a sudden Wallace’s development has taken a seat on the bench compared to the questions about quarterback and right tackle.

Even as the attention on Wallace has diminished, there is one piece of conventional wisdom that keeps cropping up. I’ve read it in multiple versions, but it always sounds something like this:

“But the Steelers will have to see how well Wallace does as a starter now that he will be going up against starting cornerbacks instead of nickel backs.”

Here’s the thing. That’s completely and utterly wrong.

You can worry about how well Wallace does as a second-year pro, and you can wonder if he’ll start getting a lot more double teams now that Santonio Holmes is a Jet. And it’s completely fair to question whether Wallace will be able to provide the consistency Holmes gave the Steelers as a true No. 1 receiver.

But it won’t be because Wallace is now facing starting corners. He faced them all last year.

I went back and logged every pass thrown to Wallace in 2009. There were 71 passes thrown Wallace’s way — he was being guarded by a starter on 60 of them. Nine of the passes (including his most notable game-winning catch against Green Bay) were thrown against backups while two of them were Hail Mary passes where it’s impossible to say which of the five defenders jumping for the ball were guarding Wallace.

Want more proof. Check out Wallace’s biggest plays from the 2009 season.

    Week Opponent Yards Defender

    9 Bengals 46 Jonathan Joseph

Not a catch, but a pass interference penalty called on Joseph. Wallace was also going against safety help on this play

    14 Packers 60 Jarret Bush

Wallace runs by Bush for early first-quarter touchdown

    16 Dolphins 54 Nate Jones

Wallace lines up inside of Holmes in rare formation. Beats Jones (and safety help) with pure speed

    3 Bengals 51 Jonathan Joseph

Simple streak route, Wallace runs by Joseph catches ball then runs out of bounds

    5 Lions 47 William James

Wallace gets past James on a post route for the touchdown

    15 Ravens 45 Frank Walker

Game-changer as Wallace helps Steelers get out from own four-yard-line to midfield.

    7 Vikings 40 Tyrell Johnson

Wallace goes against zone coverage, Johnson, a safety, is closest to Wallace at the time of the catch

    4 Chargers 35 Steve Gregory

Roethlisberger has plenty of time, Wallace finds seam in zone coverage. Gregory is the closest defender.

    10 Chiefs 33 Brandon Flowers

Wallace runs down sideline to beat Chiefs’ top cornerback, but then fumbles the ball after the catch.

Of his nine biggest plays last year, only one came against a backup cornerback while one other pass came against a starting safety. The easy explanation is that the Steelers’ formations ensured that Wallace faced starting cornerbacks. With very few exceptions, whenever Wallace entered the game, he lined up as an outside receiver, usually with Hines Ward lining up in the slot on Wallace’s side. Very, very few NFL teams have their corners follow a specific wide receiver all over the field, so usually what would happen is Wallace would face up against one of the opponent’s starting corners while the nickel or dime corner would line up against Ward in the slot.

When the Steelers went to their bunch formation with two receivers and tight end Heath Miller bunched together at the line, Wallace was usually on the outside with Ward lined up to his inside. In those cases, the starting corner was usually lined up on the outside as well, so unless Wallace ran a crossing route (which was rare) he ended up against a starting corner.

On the very rare occasions that Wallace was moved inside into the slot, it was almost always to try to get him a favorable matchup for a deep route. I counted four passes thrown Wallace’s way when he was lined up in the slot (remember that’s out of 71 passes). On all four of those passes, Wallace ran a deep route, three of them fell incomplete, but the fourth was a 54-yard touchdown against the Dolphins.

So if you wonder who may suffer by Holmes’ departure, you should probably worry more about Ward. Many of Ward’s third-down catches, and some of his first and second-down grabs, came when he was lined up inside against nickel and dime backs (and lots of linebackers in zone defenses). If Antwaan Randle-El is the Steelers’ No. 3 receiver, Pittsburgh will either have to move Ward back outside or split Randle-El out wide and ask him to do something he’s not particularly adept at doing – Randle El has six catches of 40-yards or more in his career (Wallace had six last season).

And Emanuel Sanders ... could be another Wallace. DAMN>

Undying loyalty, enthusiasm and optimism for our team even in the face of a long string of poor performances is what makes Browns fans the greatest fans in the NFL.

  • unlike stooler fans who will be gone in two years because the stoolers are going down down down. Why are the stoolers going down? Because it's important not to cheat too many years in a row. If you do it too long it will become so obvious that action will have to be taken. The NFL doesn't want Congress to start an investigation on the Stooler cheating. They will suck for about ten years before they resume their cheating ways.

  • Rest assured that if we do make the playoffs we will be the only team negatively affected by the terrible new overtime rules.
