Survey Monday October 4
-
Here are this week's survey questions:
1. Now that we have had 4 weeks to assess the situation, which one of the Browns "units" needs the most "shoring up": the QB/RBs or the TEs/WRs or the OL or the DL or the LBs or the DBs?
2. To me The Ryder Cup is a completely overhyped useless endeavor. Do you agree?
3. The Cleveland Cavaliers start training camp this week. How do you think they will do this year without whatshisname?
4. Sports Illustrated did a recent report stating that one of the most important weeks in sports/news/entertainment history occurred in October 1975 where the following events occurred in the same week or two: The Thrilla in Manilla, the debut of Saturday Night Live, the Reds and Red Sox played the 7 game WS highlighted by Carlton Fisk's HR, Liz Taylor and Richard Burton were married...again.
Aside from this can you think of a 1 or 2 week period in which significant historical/sporting events occurred that you fondly recall?
5. The 15 Finalists for Induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame were announced last week. They are in alphabetical order: Alice Cooper, The Beastie Boys, Bon Jovi, Chic, Neile Diamond, Donovan, Dr. John, The J. Geils Band, LL Cool J, Darlene Love, Laura Nyro, Donna Summer, Joe Tex, Tom Waits, Chuck Willis.
I believe only 6 at most are to be selected. Which 6 would you put into the RRHOF?
Here are this week's survey questions:
My own opinions:
1. Now that we have had 4 weeks to assess the situation, which one of the Browns "units" needs the most "shoring up": the QB/RBs or the TEs/WRs or the OL or the DL or the LBs or the DBs?
1st the WRs/TEs. Then the DL (it would help the coverage to get a better pass rush). The the QB/RB. (ask yourself...do we have a SuperBowl caliber QB on this roster?). Then the DBs. (one more good cover corner could sure help). Then the LBs (though I don't think we have any super studs at LB, what we have is functional), then OL.
2. To me The Ryder Cup is a completely overhyped useless endeavor. Do you agree?
Yes, obviously, but to explain, I think it is stupid that the USA should have a sporting competiton against an entire continent.
If it were the US vs. the UK or the US vs. France or etc., I could see that. Why don't we have it be North America v. Europe, not just the US?...if we are going to have this silly thing at all.
3. The Cleveland Cavaliers start training camp this week. How do you think they will do this year without whatshisname?
I think they will actually approach .500 because, while yes, they will not be elite again, even with the talent they have, there are a lot of other NBA teams that are still much worse...about half of them in fact.
4. In October 1975 the following events occurred in the same week or two: The Thrilla in Manilla, the debut of Saturday Night Live, the Reds and Red Sox played the 7 game WS highlighted by Carlton Fisk's HR, Liz Taylor and Richard Burton were married...again.
Aside from this can you think of a 1 or 2 week period in which significant historical/sporting events occurred that you fondly recall?
For me, it is those events that occurred in and around June 16, 1994 that are most memorable.
Let's start with the fact that my daughter was born at about 9:15 p.m. on June 16, 1994.
Though I was certainly preoccupied by that event, I was able to sit down the next day and see highlights of:
A. Arnie Palmer playing his final round of the U.S. Open.
B. the opening of the only World Cup that the US has hosted, the ceremonies being held in Chicago.
C. A vital NBA playoffs Final with the Knicks and Patrick Ewing going against the Rockets and Akeem Olajuwon
D. And last, but not least, my daughter wasn't even 24 hours old and there was that little matter of the LA police chasing a White Bronco down the highways with OJ Simpson in there threatening to commit suicide.

The 6 choices based on my own personal taste would be Alice Cooper, Bon Jovi, Neil Diamond, Donovan, J. Geils, and Tom Waits. But, I suspect that the Disco Queen is likely to make it along with an original well known rapper.

Wide Receivers. If not, then Safeties. But firstly we need a big threat to catch the ball.
2. To me The Ryder Cup is a completely overhyped useless endeavor. Do you agree?
I play golf a lot, and I don't mind watching the Ryder Cup. Pro Golfers don't get the most publicity, so I say let them have this one.
3. The Cleveland Cavaliers start training camp this week. How do you think they will do this year without whatshisname?
I don't care. Go Browns.

There was one point in 2007 (dont remember specifically) where the Browns were beating up on teams, the cavs were owning the NBA, and the Indians were in the ALCS. Good times.

Yea, I remember. The Indians were in the ALCS with a 3-1 lead over the Red Sox. The Browns were fighting for first place in the division with like a 6-3 record, and the Cavs had just come off the NBA Finals loss to the Spurs and it was expected they would be improved and be a sure fire thing to return to the finals and finally claim that championship.
BUT...unfortunately we also then have to fast forward and see what happened: The Indians f**ked it up and lost that series 4-3. The Browns f**ked it up when DA blew the game against the Bengals with his 4 ints. The Cavs f**ked it up when they only ended up winning like 45 games and lost in the Eastern Conf. semifinals to the Celtics.
Thanks for reminding us of such cheerful f**king memories

It's all Jim Sorgi's fault.

I remember when the Browns clinched the division in 1980 I went on my first real date that night. The Browns win took the pressure off the date. Although her braces scared me a little bit. I can still smell her perfume mixed with my Brut aftershave and REO Speedwagon on the radio. Man, REO is gay, no wonder she made me take her home before I got to third base.
Was that "she made me take her home" as in Alice Cooper's " If you want to Be My Lover...you better take me home" or as in "You are a squid, take me home and get out of my sight"?
Perhaps, if it was the latter, you should have put on some Alice Cooper instead of the gay REO Speedwagon. Then maybe you would have rounded third and headed for home?
At least you could have put on some Meat Loaf:

4. Not the kind of thing I usually remember.

What a goofy and fun time that was in my life. LOLOL.

One good thing about this class of nominees is that if both AC and Donovan make it they can recreate their duet performance of Billion Dollar Babies:
-
Here is another funny thing about this year's nominees is that I attended a concert at the Akron Rubber Bowl in 1972 which featured Dr. John, J. Geils Band, and Alice Cooper. Here is a blurb I found on a website about that show:
August 5, 1972 to be exact, my cousin, her friend and my pal Mike H., were headed back to the Rubber Bowl for the Alice Cooper School’s Out show. Supporting acts were Dr. John and the J. Geils Band.
***
Dr. John was better than I expected and prior to J. Geils starting their session lead singer Pete Wolfe came out on a Harley-Davidson, parked it center stage, bellowed something now forgotten to the crowd and it was on! I was a J. Geils Band fan from that day onward.
***
Alice Cooper was great. He had all the original members and the stage act was more than I expected. The hanging, the snake, ripping up huge Alice posters and throwing them into the crowd, throwing handfuls of dollar bills into the crowd and the musical performance just kicked ass all the way. The highlight was during the School’s Out encore when a helicopter flew overhead, started slowly circling the perimeter of the stadium and then strangely these white things started flowing out of the copter and floating down to the crowd.
***
My pal Mike was lucky enough to catch one and they turned out to be faux ‘lace’ panties with A.C. ‘embroidered’ on them.
***
I also caught one of the panties at that show. We were only probably 20-25 feet from the front of the stage
-
I also found this where it says that the only other time that the "panty dropping" from a helicopter stunt was done at any Alice Cooper concert besides the Rubber Bowl was at the Hollywood Bowl:
July 23rd `72 Hollywood, CA Hollywood Bowl (w/ Capt. Beyond and JoJo Gunne)
The famous `Live at the Hollywood Bowl`/`We`re All Crazier The You Are` bootleg recorded. Wolfman Jack introduces the band from a camel.
One of the most well-known Alice Cooper concert stories is the Hollywood Bowl show '72 where hundreds of the paper panties were dropped on the audience from a helicopter. Supposedly the helicopter pilot that they hired to do that was fined for flying too low.
Everything was a decadent waste of money. That was one of the purposes. I, what was the most decadent waste of money? I would say maybe the most decadent waste of money was the dropping of the panties - 18,000 pair of panties from an airplane on all the people who came to see him at the Hollywood Bowl. It ended up costing about $100,000 to do the panty drop, because it was illegal to do it, and the pilot went to jail for a couple of months, and we had to support his family, and pay for his career. And here they are, ladies and gentlemen, the paper panties.
(Shep Gordon)
Footage from the show was shot to be used on Top Of The Pops as a change from the performance that had been using for weeks.
Elton John was in the audience

1. DB's have been manhandled past two games. Definitely needs some shoring.
2. Yep. Then again I am not a golfer
3. They will overachieve if they play .500 ball
4. June 1997. Wife and i were married on the same day Tyson munched on Evander's outer ear portions. This foreshadowed the misery that lie ahead...
5. Alice Cooper, Beastie Boys, Bon Jovi, Dr John, J.Geils, Tom Waits

That reminds me that my wife and I were married on the same day that Carl Lewis was going for his 4th Gold medal to tie Jesse Owens. I remember this because we were watching it in our hotel room. You might ask "why were you watching the Olympics on your Wedding night, didn't you have something better to do?". Well, yes, but the hotel was to deliver this "Honeymoon package" to our room, consisting of a bottle of champagne, fruits, etc. But they were taking their sweet blessed time about delivering it, and we figured we better wait for it before we "got busy". So, in the meantime while waiting for the champagne, we watched the Olympics. What can I say. (We are still together 26 years later thanks)
5. Alice Cooper, Beastie Boys, Bon Jovi, Dr John, J.Geils, Tom Waits
A lot of us are thinking somewhat along the same lines. AC, BJ, and Waits seem to be pretty unanimous choices.

OK, so, as Paul Harvey said, tell us "the rest of the story". Did you go out with her again and hit a triple ..or a homer...perhaps?
I mean, even getting to second base on your first date seems pretty good, all things considered.

WRs...they aren't getting open.

It's overhyped for sure, but not useless. It shows how pampered our US golfers are.

43-39

Tragically, the 9-11 WTC attack & the NFL unveiling the huge flags at every stadium across the fields. Very nice patriotic tribute.

If that latter was true I am wondering why she didn't go knob gobbling the minute you got in your car?

It is not a fond memory, but i'll never forget the drama of October 17,1989 when the earthquake hit San Francisco during the World Series between Oakland and the Giants. Al Michaels announced that they were having an earthquake during the broadcast. i popped a tape in the VCR and recorded all the drama. There was rescue dramas that played out for the next couple of days.
i think that week should get some consideration.
