The Browns Board

  • Good article. I like his approach to the game.

  • I doubt Jake will want to be a backup. That is why he came here was to start.

The more I read, the more I think McCoy will campaign for Delhomme to be the veteran backup next season, not Wallace, who I believe is a better QB than Delhomme at this point. I think Holmgren will want a developmental guy at #3, like a 5th round pick. Wallace, however, has the smarter contract.

I was thinking about this today as well. If McCoy keeps playing well then he's at least the #2 if not the #1 next year. If so, then you really aren't going to keep Wallace or Delhomme as #3. #3 should be reserved for a project QB. If he develops then you have two and you can trade one as the Packers did for every backup to Favre in the 90s and use those picks and players to retool or improve your team.

An interesting dilemma. I think that the survivor between Jake and Wallace will be the guy with the best attitude and there's something about Seneca's attitude that I don't like. Two weeks ago he was lobbying and he's now backtracked on that (probably because Holmgren or Mangini told him to...) and that doesn't strike me as a positive locker room force. Jake may be many things but he's popular with veterans and he might be the more likely backup next year.

I don't think Wallace was lobbying for him self to start, but for the best person to start. He clearly said that he himself has shown that he has done good in Delhommes place and that Colt had only had one start which isn't enough to show that he should be the starter. Now Colt has had 3 good games and Wallace is just agreeing that who ever starts starts and that it is up to the coaches.

I see Wallace being a back up the next 4 or 5 years and I also see the Browns releasing Delhomme after the season and possibly signing him as an offensive assistant/QB coach.

Dude can't and won't start anywhere else. Unless he wants to retire he'll take a back up roll if it's offered. I don't think it should be offered. The guy is putrid.

If Mike Holmgren and Eric Mangini and Tom Heckert want him back here then I will accept their judgment, and vice versa. Who, after all, is better qualified to make that judgment?

They way things are progressing with Mccoy. I dont see how you can pull him for Jake Delhomme. Delhomme was obviously a bandaid till we could fiind a more permanent solution. Colt is possibly that solution, and thus far he has been doing pretty well considering whats hes been faced with. On top of that, you would throw a wrench into the current momentum they have. Doesnt make any sense on any level. His best contribution atm is to pass his wisdom of the game to Colt. Will he want to accept that role? I doubt it. But thats what is best for the team atm.

I am suggesting that Jake may want to go somewhere else where he has a shot at the starting job. That is, afterall, why he turned down NO for Cleveland.

His contract is also hefty, he may get cut if Colt plays out the year the way he is doing now.

I would rather have Jake as a backup than Seneca, but I am not sure that will work out without a pay cut and Jake realizing that he may be done in the NFL as a starter for good. The man is a competitor, he won't lay down like that.

I'd much rather have him then Seneca as well. Is always good to have a veteran of Jakes caliber. But I agree, I dont think he will accept this role, even though I dont see any teams picking him up as a starter. Barring injuries.

I dont think thats what he was suggesting that Delhomme would start here, just he wouldnt want to be a backup and ask for his release.

It seems like Delhomme has taken his role the mentor. I never actually heard the emotion put into the interviews that were posted above, but it seems like he has accepted his role.

Wallace is a free agent and Dellhomme is under contract for a hefty chunk of change that you'd have to eat! I agree Wallace would be a better back up and I'd eat Jakes contract and offer Wallace a new 3 year deal as a backup.
