Is this the real McCoy?

Ouch. That was just an ugly as hell game all the way around... but most disturbingly for our boy McCoy. He looked bad on anything more than 10 yards past the line of scrimmage. Threw some wounded ducks and three pretty easy picks.
I was getting by on, "Well, at least we have our quarterback!" This set that back a little. He was really, really bad... but it's even worse because it plays into the fears that he can only play short ball.

Before we hear it: No, I'm not jumping to conclusions or cutting McCoy based on one game. But he was dreadful, especially on anything longer than 10 yards. Lots of wobblers, lots of underthrows. It's something to be a little concerned about. Was it the weather? If so... yeah, it's something to be concerned about.
Just watch Rodgers dominate the Giants with over 400 yards on a very cold day. Obviously it's a much better cockpit, but that kid can REALLY spin it, put it on a dime from 10 or 45. That's a serious QB talent there, with superior skills in each and every facet of the game.
Can McCoy be like that? I don't know... man, I hope so. He'll never have a Rodgers arm (which does matter), but I'm hoping he can put together a game like that some day.

Shep...the kid had an off day...dont put so much pressure on him...he'll be ok...its just one game man...you cant expect him to have it every game...some of the great ones have clunkers too.

I don't think McCoy is ever going to be mistaken for Rodgers and I doubt he will ever be near that level. That doesn't mean that he can't be a good QB for the Browns though. His arm is good enough but not elite. He will definitely need to make quicker reads than most but he seems to be heady enough to do that. What I do like about him is his elusiveness and mobility combined with his accuracy. Time will tell I guess but it wouldn't exactly shock me if the Browns went another direction at QB.

His arm may not be elite but is it good enough for the AFC North? The Browns and its competitors in the AFC North have bad weather from Thanksgiving onwards when division titles/wild card/playoff seedings are at stake. A successful QB here has to be able to thread the needle under these conditions not underthrow. I'm not throwing the kid under the bus but we need a careful analysis here so we don't miss a "once in a generation" QB in this draft.
-
Well, Colt's performance in typical Cleveland conditions was not reassuring. To be competitive in this division we have to win games like these at this time of the year. Do we continue the experiment or pursue Luck or Newton in the draft?
Good idea. Get rid of the QB and the head coach...something never tried before in cleveland.

We're not getting Andrew Luck anyway. He won't fall past Carolina. I don't understand why this is even being talked about.

heres my thought on Mccoy...
My Brother and I go back and forth on Mccoy, he thinks he is going to be a great NFL QB, but he aslo thought Frye and Quinn and DA were going to be the next big thing. The thing that I look for is, Is this QB going to be a Super Bowl type QB. I just do not think he can be, do I think he will be a good NFL QB? Yep I do, but I do not think he can be a top 5 QB in this league....
Arm Strenth- Average at best
He is to short for a QB in the NFL( THere is only one Drew Bres and hes taller than Colt)
Tiny- needs to get bigger, that will come in the off season
He is really smart, but maybe to smart in the fact he might think he can make the throws he really cant make
If the gods of football let Andrew Luck drop to us, we would have no choice but to take him......
I hae a feeling Luck will not be there, so I have and pray Mccoy is it, I hope I am wrong...We will see
-
Go with McCoy. He's shown more poise since getting thrown in there than either of the last two great hope (DA and BQ). You've gotta give him a shot.

Drew Brees is shorter than Colt by about an inch and a half.

Here we go again...
Hey guys, our ROOKIE QB had one off day, lets just forget any of the good games he had because he has to play like Superman every week or he is freakin garbage. We should cut him and pick up the next highly touted rookie QB!
This topic mentality fits right in with wanting to axe our current coach because he didn't take us to the promised land within two years.

There will be several good Qb's in the draft this year, so hopefully we can get one in the later rounds. Right now we need to get an o-lineman and a high quality WR imo
-
The way McCoy was throwing the ball I'd say the cold was a big factor. He decided not to wear gloves and frankly looked like he was freezing his ass off on the sidelines. Takes time to acclimate to the cold weather. That and him being a rookie were big factors. Cleveland fans. The most impatient in the USA.
-
1 bad game and this thread emerges. thank you for confirming that 95% of cleveland sports fans are Retards. thanks a lot.
considering that tom brady had an even worse game against the same team last year says more about the ravens defense than the browns offense, especially a rookie qb.

Guys, there's nothing wrong with discussing it. The Browns look likely to draft fifth or sixth, franchise quarterback territory, and Holmgren is a guy who knows you aren't going to win very much for very long without an elite quarterback, a guy at least capable of being a top 10 passer for a decade or so.
You can't stick your head in the sand. If you're Holmgren, Haskell, and Heckert, you have plenty to talk about. At least for one game in the Cleveland cold, McCoy looked incapable of going past 10 or 15 yards with any zip or accuracy. You have to discuss it. It wasn't pressure from the Ravens because they chose to play with his head in coverage... and it worked.
On the plus side, I know Holmgren looks at McCoy and sees a WCO quarterback, a blend of Montana and Garcia: Smart, nimble, accurate, and a fiery leader. Neither of those guys were big and neither had anything close to a cannon. Then again, neither had to play in Cleveland, Pittsburgh, or Cincinnati in December very often.
Newsome says the Ravens liked Flacco because he was a big guy with big hands and a strong arm for AFC North Winters. Roethlisberger fits that description, too. Palmer is 6'5". Is that the ideal? Because McCoy is obviously the "one of these things is not the like the others."
No, we aren't talking about Luck. He'll go to Carolina. Elway says if he's there at two for the Broncos, they have to take him, period. Otherwise somebody trades up. Guaranteed that SF's new coach Jim Harbaugh (you read it here 101st) would burn villages to get him.
We're talking about Ryan Mallett almost certainly. One one hand, he fits right in with those AFC North giant quarterbacks. On the other, he doesn't seem like much of a fit in the WCO.
My sense? I think Holmgren will move to the sideline in about 9 days and McCoy will become his last great project. He'll get him a serious #1 WR in A.J. Green. He'll ask him to get a little bigger, a little stronger, and to keep being a film junkie, but now he'll be watching Montana, Young, Garcia, Favre, and Hasselbeck (in his prime) to learn the WCO.
-
I tend to like McCoy, and yes, he did have a very bad game against the Ravens...
But think about it... Wouldn't it be better for a new QB to have nice o-line & GOOD receivers to get open and catch the ball? Also, a badass defense helps, too. I've noticed QB success comes with having great surroundings when they step in to play.
I say keep Colt around, for now. Get some big, fast WR's, some key defensive players, and maybe a little more help on the right side of the o-line before even discussing another QB. This way, we can see what Colt can do with more help, and then, if he still needs replaced... The team will be READY for a new QB to have success.

I think people underestimate the human body's ability to adapt to weather. They say Marino never played great in cold weather, but that could be because he didn't have to often enough to acclimate.
Colt's bad throws could be attributed to footwork, not actual arm strength. Well, sort of. Ryan Mallet or Jake Locker can throw the football 50 yards off their back foot. So they don't need flawless footwork. Colt does.
I like McCoy's chances at building his downfield accuracy and velocity enough to be consistently competitive over the risk of any new QB that isn't a "slam dunk" Bradford or Peyton Manning type. Luck probably fits that description, but no one else in the draft does. Mallett will likely never become the leader that Colt is. Locker will never possess the accuracy that Colt possesses innately. How many of those guys will study the game and learn the opposing defense with the dedication Colt has?
In my opinion it comes down to what's fixable and what's not. McCoy will probably never have a Joe Flacco arm. But if he develops his arm strength even a modest amount, he can use the deep ball to stretch the field enough to slice through good defenses. Someday he could make Ravens fans think, "boy, I wish Joe had Colt McCoy's mobility." Steelers fans could one day think, "boy, I wish Big Ben had Colt's character." Etc.
-
Colt did say that the weather did not affect his throwing
-
I have said from the get go, I am not sold on Colt..I also said I hope I am wrong about him...
I just think he does not have all the key factors to become great in the NFL, again I hope I am wrong..
I also think we just saw the BEST year Hillis will ever have as a Cleveland Brown.....
-
I really don't think Holmgren will bail on McCoy after all the good things he showed. He'll get next year in a REALLY good situation: Learning the WCO from the reigning guru, upgraded line, true #1 WR (maybe Green), serious talent at LT, C, FB, and TB (add in Hardesty), and excellent TEs in Watson and Moore. Really doesn't get any better.
If McCoy can't make THAT work? He deserves to become a backup.
