Calfox Browns 3-round mock draft 2011
-
nfldraftscout has Mathews going 4th or 5th round. I'd like Casey as a 3rd round pick, only if the Browns are going to a 4-3.
He's only 6-1, 238 - that's small for a 3-4, in my dumb opinion...

I think whoever we bring in next will switch us back to the 4 - 3.
All the likely candidates seem to be on 4 - 3 teams. Or ran a 4 - 3 defnse.
-
I'll wait until the combine to believe that Marcel Dareus can truly run a 4.5 40.

That may be a little small but at the same time I think we will see his stock rise to the 3rd round or even higher by the time the draft comes around. He hasn't played in his bowl game yet. If he performs well on that stage that would be huge for him.
I hope the Browns have learned their lesson and will not ignore him like they did his brother. I would be shocked given the family history if he is not at the very least an above average NFL linebacker. Not to mention the excitement the Browns organization would give fans by having this guy on our team.
Or we could just ignore him and take a flyer on another potential bust at linebacker.
-
Round one - 6th pick - Marcel Darius, DE/DL, Alabama
Because A. J. Green is drafted already because the oustanding Stanford qb is standing pat on his decision to stay in college. The wr will have to wait til the second round - don't worry, the Browns will get their
Blackmon in the second round. Really. The Browns MUST get a major pass rush going, and boost their 3 man front in the process if they are going to stay with the 3-4. But, if they go 4-3, this guy is still the perfect pick:
(I lost the link, forget where I saw this blurb - had cut and pasted it into Notepad)
"What makes this guy such a highly touted prospect is his freakish athletic ability. Dareus is 6'4", 300 lbs and runs a 4.5 second 40 yard dash. Pass rushing has become crucial in the NFL as we've seen some great talent at the quarterback position emerge. "
BTW, this guy knocked Colt McCoy so hard on a hit, he had to leave the game. It wasn't a dirty hit, either. So,
Colt will know him already. @@
Round Two - Torrey Smith, WR/KR, 6-1, 205, Maryland
The Browns missed out on Green, Blackmon is a higher ranked Torrey Smith. But, Blackmon didn't impress all that much in his bowl game... Smith did. This kid is fast, tough, smart, elusive... the Browns would be fortunate bigtime, if this kid hasn't been stolen ealier.
Compare him and Blackmon. You will like this pick.
Round Three - Marcus Gilbert, OT, 6-5, 320, Florida
Big guy, powerful, quick feet, doesn't give up sacks but rarely, if ever, quick 40 time
is 5.12 sec. The Browns' entire offense is hindered by very poor RT play. There are other tackles they could pick later,
but Gilbert is far and away better, I think.
I look to the 4th and 5th rounds for a cb, and a smallish, fast, hard hitting small school DE/LB, not in that order maybe...

Cal, Those are some pretty good picks, I live in Alabama and have watched Marcel Darius play and he is a monster, the only thing that worries me about him is that he has a ton of talent around him that helps him look a tad better than he is right now. The thing is, he is still young and will grow a bit, and will be a beast. I have also watched the Dl Nick Fairley from Auburn, and he is a show stopper. I can't wait till monday to see how he is going to do against the speedy Oregon Ducks. I have a feeling that we will sign a few more people VIA freeageny this year then usual. They will most likely go after a top tier WR in freeagency or trade.

Who knows he may be a late bloomer, still young at 21.
With D'Qwell now a FA and ancient backups, Bowens and Barton, we could use him

I also would not like to bank on Hardesty coming back, so I have a later round RB suggestion (assuming a WC offense). OSU's Brandon Saine is fast, a very good receiver, & would spell Hillis. I don't know just where he would go in the draft, but could he be a sleeper who may last awhile?

Good mock, Cal. If the Browns can get a top f/a WR, I could see something like this. But Torrey Smith had 2 catches for 10 yards in his minor bowl game. He's also not the big YAC guy we'd want for the WCO... but if we already picked up Vincent Jackson, it could be a guy like Broyles or Smith.

No more Broyles
Ryan Broyles will return to Sooners. Associated Press
NORMAN, Okla. -- All-American wide receiver Ryan Broyles is coming back to Oklahoma for his senior season, saying he believes he can get himself "better prepared for the NFL."
Broyles set school records this season with 131 receptions for 1,622 yards and also eclipsed the Sooners' career records for receptions, yardage and touchdowns.
His decision Thursday comes one day after linebacker Travis Lewis announced he would return to Oklahoma next season with the goal of pursuing a national championship.
Broyles says he wants to "win more championships and break every record possible as a receiver" and considers himself fortunate to have the players around him to accomplish his goals.

Luck and Broyles out. Ouch. Hurts us in two very different ways. Luck pulling out moves Green up.

All I know is the Other QBs and thier agents need to call Andrew Luck and thank him for making them more money. AJ Green will for sure be gone now, and Broyles was my sleeper pick in the 2nd round, but now next year he will probably be a first. Also I love how ESPN is talking about how much money Luck is losing out on instead of saying that yound man has a good head on his shoulders.

ESPN are taints.
Along with cheering this week when Mangini got fired they are putting down a kid who goes back to college to finish his degree instead of opting for millions and fame. Luck will get this $ and fame eventually, school is something that will go beyond pro football.

i remember a few years ago (not saying anyone on this board) when espn and ppl were saying that clay wasnt going to be that good and wat not well i dont want to see the browns pass on another matthews they have history and they seem to have a way to become something great and have a nose for the ball

I think this is a moot topic until we get a head coach. That will determine a lot of our draft strategy. If it is Holmgren, the emphasis will be on offense. If someone else, who knows. What I do know is that you can't hire a HC and expect him to have no say in who plays on his team.
-
It's quite moot, yes, but it's fun !
I may even be right. But, Shep IS right - I didn't get to see the military bowl, I thought they played N. Carolina state in the bowl game, my bad.
I can't tell how much he played in the bowl game, but Maryland won huge - I imagine the 2nd and 3rd strings got a good bit of time...
He WAS great in that NC game, though:
***********************************
http://www.testudotimes.com/2010/11/27/183...n-c-state-38-31
He made quite the statement to the scouts, with a record-setting performance of 14 catches for 224 yards and four TDs.
11/30/10 - ACC WEEK 13 OFFENSIVE BACK OF THE WEEK: Torrey Smith, Maryland, WR, Jr., 6-1, 205, Colonial Beach, Va. (Stafford), turned in one of the most outstanding performances by a receiver in Maryland history, setting the school's single-game record with four touchdown receptions, while setting career highs with 14 receptions and 224 receiving yards as Maryland knocked off No. 21 NC State 38-31. His receiving yardage is the third most in a single game in school history and 18th-most on the ACC books, while his receptions are just two off the ACC mark. Smith's 1,045 yards are the second-most in a season in school history. Smith finished the regular season with 12 TD catches, which is a Maryland record and is tied for the ninth most in a season in ACC history. In addition to his receiving yards, Smith had 48 kickoff return yards, giving him 272 all-purpose yards in the game. He broke Lamont Jordan's school record for career all-purpose yards, and his 5,183 yards ranks seventh on the ACC career list. - ACC football

I agree with some of the others, Luck deciding to stay in school means AJ Green will almost certainly be off the board, which raises the likelihood of the Browns going D with their first pick or trying to trade down.
If we go WR in the second, I'll have to tune in Pitt's Bowl game Saturday to check out his guy- Walter's draft has us taking him in the second round, assuming he decides to declare.
-
Baldwin is a talent, for sure. But, he ran his mouth bigtime, putting down his coaches and qb for seemingly trying to "Hurt his draft stock"...
He's a future Ocho Stinko. I'd pass.
The concern is also that he seems to usually have db's right with him when he's catching passes - maybe not a wr
who can get separation in the pros....
I like Smith. @@

This dude is on crack if he thinks Darius is running any where near a 4.5 40. He is a freak but he isnt as dominant as Id like risk if were going to gamble and move him into a 3-4. If at all possible we should trade back 10 spots and look for someone like DE C. Jordan from Cal.
6-1 238 isnt bad for a MIKE LB in a 3-4. P. Willis was listed at 242 coming out of Ole Miss and they said his playing weight was more then likely around 235. I like Matthews intensity and thats really what our D is missing in the middle. I want someone to attack the LOS instead of waiting for the RB to plow into them.
A WR that isnt getting mentioned on this board and is my favorite in the 2nd round is T. Young. He is a perfect slot/big play reciever. He reminds of a poor mans Desean Jackson, or maybe a Dexter McCluster.
If our draft came out looking like this Id cream my pants
RD1- C. Jordan DE
RD2- T. Young WR
RD3- C. Matthews ILB
-
The Browns need for a #1 who fits the WCO -- size, YAC potential -- is so intense, it's tough to see us trying to wait until round 2 to find a "right now" guy. If we don't sign a Malcolm Floyd in free agency, I'd look for the Browns to either use that 6 on a WR or trade down and get one just a little lower.
Michael Floyd is slotted to go in the 20 area. Most people have Baldwin in that area, too. The OK State kid (name suddenly left me) is closer to top 10 and Julio Jones is around the top 10, too. All three are big guys who can run like backs with the ball.

Saine will last a while because he has proven that he is just not that good.
