The Browns named their coaching staff for the 2011 season, the team announced Monday evening.

The Cleveland Browns today announced that coaches Gary Brown (Running Backs), Steve Hagen (Tight Ends), Jerome Henderson (Defensive Backs), Kent Johnston (Strength and Conditioning), Rick Lyle (Assistant Strength and Conditioning), Luke Steckel (Assistant to the Head Coach) and George Warhop (Offensive Line) will be retained from last year’s staff. In addition, Chris Beake (Offensive Assistant), Chuck Bullough (Defensive Assistant), Shawn Mennenga (Special Teams Assistant) and Ray Rhodes (Senior Assistant - Defense) will join the club’s coaching staff. Keith Gilbertson will also return to the coaching ranks in 2011 as senior assistant -- offense after previously serving as the Browns Director of Pro Personnel last year.

“With our coaching staff now complete, I am excited about the group that we have been able to assemble,” said Browns Head Coach Pat Shurmur. “I believe we have a blend of coaches with a tremendous amount of experience who have proven to be excellent teachers throughout the course of their careers. I have known most of these guys for a considerable amount of time, and not only have I been impressed with their work, but they are all greatly respected around the league. Many of our coaches have been a part of winning programs, which is an important element as well. I feel very good about the strengths that each coach possesses, and I am confident this will benefit our team.”

Beake spent last season as an offensive assistant with the San Francisco 49ers. Prior to that, he spent two years with the Seattle Seahawks, first as an offensive quality control coach in 2008 before serving as an offensive assistant/assistant special teams coach the following season. Prior to his stint in Seattle, he was the linebackers coach with the Atlanta Falcons from 2004-06. During that time, Beake mentored Keith Brooking to Pro Bowl selections in 2004 and 2005. Prior to Atlanta, Beake spent six seasons with San Francisco in various roles. He was a pro personnel assistant (1998), quality control/defense coach (1999), defensive assistant (2000-02) and offensive assistant (2003).

Bullough joins the Browns staff with 14 years of coaching experience on both the collegiate and professional levels. He most recently spent the previous five seasons at UCLA, where he served as the linebackers coach (2006-08) and defensive coordinator (2009-10). Bullough was the linebackers coach at Western Michigan University in 2005 and linebackers and special teams coach at Lake Forest College in 2004. He joined the NFL coaching ranks with the Chicago Bears for five seasons from 1999-2003. During his time with the Bears, he was the assistant linebackers coach (1999-2001), assistant defensive line coach (2002) and assistant secondary coach (2003), while also assisting with special teams all five seasons. Bullough began his coaching career at his alma mater, Michigan State University, spending one season assisting the defensive backs (1997) and another assisting the offensive line (1998). A four-year letterman at MSU, Bullough was drafted by Philadelphia in the eighth round (214th overall) of the 1992 NFL Draft and spent three seasons with the Miami Dolphins (1993-95) as a linebacker. A second generation NFL player and coach, Bullough’s father, Hank, spent 21 years as an NFL coach, most notably winning a Super Bowl title as an assistant with the 1970 Baltimore Colts and spending parts of the 1985 and 1986 seasons as the head coach of the Buffalo Bills.

Gilbertson joined the Browns last season as the Director of Pro Personnel. He has 38 years of coaching experience, most recently with the Seattle Seahawks where he served in several capacities, including offensive consultant (2005), assistant offensive line coach (2006-07) and wide receivers coach (2008). Gilbertson has spent 28 years as a coach on the collegiate level, including nine as a head coach, consisting of stints at Idaho (1986-88), Cal-Berkeley (1992-95) and Washington (2003-04). During that time his teams posted a composite record of 55-51. He began his coaching career by serving as a graduate assistant at Idaho State (1971-74), Western Washington (1975) and Washington (1976). He has been a member of the staffs at Utah State (1977-81), Idaho (1982) and Washington (1989-91, ’99-02). He previously coached professionally with the Seahawks from 1996-98 and the Los Angeles Express of the USFL from 1983-85.

Mennenga brings 17 years of coaching experience on the collegiate level to the Browns’ special teams. He most recently spent the past two seasons (2009-10) as the linebackers coach at South Dakota State University. Before joining South Dakota State’s staff, Mennenga spent four seasons (2005-08) as the defensive coordinator at Fort Hays State University in Hays, Kansas. He spent the previous four years at Culver-Stockton College in Canton, Missouri, where he served one season as the Wildcats’ defensive coordinator (2001) and the final three as the team’s head coach (2002-04). During his collegiate coaching career, he has also held assistant positions at Hutchinson Community College (defensive coordinator – 1998-2000), Western Kentucky University (outside linebackers – 1997) and Southwest Baptist University (1995-96 – secondary; 1994 – graduate assistant).

Rhodes brings 30 years of experience coaching in the NFL, including five seasons as a head coach. He spent the past three seasons with the Houston Texans, serving first as assistant defensive backs coach in 2008 before spending the last two seasons as senior defensive assistant. Prior to Houston, Rhodes spent five seasons with the Seattle Seahawks as defensive coordinator (2003-05) and special projects/defense (2006-07). Rhodes also served as the defensive coordinator in Denver (2001-02), Washington (2000), San Francisco (1994) and Green Bay (1992-93). He was the head coach in Green Bay in 1998, leading the Packers to an 8-8 record. Rhodes was the head coach in Philadelphia from 1995-98 and in his first year there he earned NFL Coach of Year honors after guiding the Eagles to a 10-6 mark and an appearance in the NFC Divisional Round of the playoffs. Rhodes got his start in the NFL with the 49ers as assistant secondary coach from 1981-82 before coaching defensive backs from 1983-91. He was a 10th round draft choice by the New York Giants in 1974 and played wide receiver for his first three NFL seasons (1974-76), before switching to defensive back for the final four years of his career (1977-80). Overall, Rhodes appeared in 97 regular season contests and in 1975, he led the NFC with a 20.7 yards per reception clip.

Steckel enters his third season with the Browns as the Assistant to the Head Coach. He was a three-year letterman as a linebacker at Princeton University where served as team captain as a senior and led the Tigers to a 9-1 record and the Ivy League Championship. Steckel’s father, Les, was a coach for 32 years with 23 of them in the NFL, including the 1984 season as the head coach of the Minnesota Vikings.

  • Ray Rhodes and Dick Jauron working with the defense is something I can get excited about. Tons of knowledge and experience, both have extended stents as defensive coordinators and both have a few years each of head coaching experience. At first I was meh on the Jauron hire but with Rhodes and Jauron, I think we hit a homerun. Can't wait to see what they put on the field next year.

  • since 99 we haven't had a "football guru" with a qualified staff run the browns (or anything close to it). we have one now and i'm really liking what they've done thus far and i can't wait to see what happens from here on out. let's just hope there isn't a lock out!

  • Finally a coaching staff with a track record, no more learning on the job...

I feel one of the areas that has led to our dismal performance on the field during the last 10 years has been the inexperience of our coaching staff...

Too many 1st time coordinators and position coaches learning on the job.. Players making rookie mistakes and coaches doing the same..

Now all we need is some impact players to go along with the core group that we already have on the roster...

Okey Heckert & company---you know what we need so go out and get the players....

    Peace

  • ill just go on record to say that these replies confuse me after reading thru that lackluster list.

  • i like our staff but only 4 years of experience for a special teams coordinator does worry me a bit... ya i know, its only special teams, but when is the last time we have given up a special teams touchdown?! And I still don't get why we didn't keep Seely...

  • I think the Special Teams will be fine, we will have Cribbs back next year healthy and Hodges is a good punter...We just gotta figure out the Kicker situation,i would suggest we just pay Dawson....And any ST Coach is better than the one the Jets had

    some...i guess....

4 guys with 20+ years in the NFL....all on defensive side of the ball.

4 guys with 10+ years in NFL, including our rookie head coach.

11 guys under 10 years in the league....

so i guess my confusion arises from the comments that suggest this is an experienced staff....or that its anymore qualified than any other staff since 99.

holmy was a great coach....football guru is going a bit far. his first year as a czar has been anything but successful, full of questionable decision making already.

im sorry if my rosy glasses aren't quite working, but im having a very hard time getting excited about any of this. a staff filled with either first timers or guys that were fired from failed promotions doesn't really do it for me....so i wont hold my breath, if i even watch any games next year.

Every great coach was a first timer at one point, and every coach good or bad, has been fired. Ray Rhodes was NFL coach of the year at one point

I know what you are saying, but when you get down to it, almost any coaching staff looks like that.

I guess what i am saying is superstars don't stay asst coaches.

Defensively we have a group that can run with the ball allowing Shurmer to focus on the offensive side of the ball.

Juron and Rhodes have been given the keys to the city on that side of the ball.

In a way, it is almost as if Rhodes is the DC and Juron is almost a co-head coach.

Any lack of production on the D isn't going to be caused by lack of preparation or inability. It's going to be caused by lack of playing talent.

You seem to be a 100% negative leaning so I'm not trying to change your mind. Your free to be as wrong as you want but keep in mind that during Holmgren's first year as the Browns guru he had to carry that dead weight of a head coach.

Would you rather have Carthon, Chud or Dabold calling the plays????

This is the most coaching experience we've had since our rebirth so I can't feel your confusion or your opinion of lackluster..

yeah, and who gave them those grades, you? don't i remember you saying that you're not even 20 years old? but yet you're a moderator here and seem to throw out decades of wisdom?

pleez son, most of us were drinking little kings watching the 'real' browns while you were still pooping yellow.

and that's what this coaching staff looks like to me: DOO DOO.

YOUR GRADE: minus infinity plus another minus infinty.

it seems like to me and i could be wrong, that you just don't like holmgren and you have an axe to grind with him. why would you say he wasn't successful in his first year? what questionable decision making are you speaking of? i'm not one to accuse anyone of being something they're not, but your post looks like the pro-mangini posts that i see on this board. they blame every mangini mistake/blunder on holmgren and have an axe to grind with him for firing mangini. if this is the case then i'll disregard your opinion due to the mangini bias. if it's not the case, i would love to see you explain the so-called lack of success and bad decision making on holmgren's part.

while i like what i've seen from holmgren, no one is above criticicsm and if he were to make a mistake/blunder/wrong move i'll be the first one to criticize him. but if the guy hasn't done anything of the sort, i'll stand by him and defend him. it's like that for anybody. i have no bias. i'll support anyone who will help this team win and not work against the cause of a winning orginization.

and out of fairness to holmgren, he does deserve to be called a football guru. football guru doesn't mean you have a perfect record. it simply means that you have more success than failure, you've learned and grown from your mistakes and you're notorious for helping losing teams turn into winners. i call it the way i see it.

  • Im optimistic but i guess you have to be when your a Browns fan, but seriously i like Jerome Henderson he is a great DB coach and i think one day will become one of the best DCs,hes just young i think hes one of are best Position Coaches

i think i speak for most of us who are optimistic that we aren't guaranteeing success. we just feel that based on certain things that have been discussed in this thread and in other threads, we have a reason to feel good about the future of this team. could we be wrong? ofcourse we could. but why be so gloomy and down when there's no reason to be at the present time? i've seen just about all of the negative opinions and none of them have convinced me to feel bad about the upcoming season. i'm a wait and see type of person anyway.

i don't think the past has anything to do with the present since none of those people from the past are here and there's alot more experience in this fo than in the past (starting with the prez and gm). that type of experience at the top and in other areas will help those with less expeirence.
