    Today's Survey:

    My own opinions:

    A. Here are the list of the Quarterbacks who are in the All time Top 20 in career passing yards who are not yet in the HOF. The number next to their name lists where they rank in all time yardage. The gaps mean that the person in the missing number is already in the HOF. Tell us, who gets in, who doesn't:

    1. Brett Favre

    3. Peyton Manning*

    7. Vinny Testaverde

    8. Drew Bledsoe

    11. Kerry Collins*

    13. Dave Kreig

    14. Boomer Esiason

    15. Donovan McNabb*

    17. Drew Brees*

    18. Jim Everett

    19. Tom Brady*

    20. Jim Hart

Favre, Manning and Brady are shoe-ins. If the Saints with Brees continue to challenge for rings, Brees could join that group. McNabb will be borderline. (yes, actually, I believe his skin tone will help him even though his career has been about comparable to Esiason and Bledsoe.) No one else is likely.

    B. Now here is the similar for career yardage leaders in rushing yards:

    4. Curtis Martin

    5. Jerome Bettis

    6. LaDanian Tomlinson*

    11. Edgerrin James

    15. Fred Taylor*

    17. Corey Dillon

    19. Warrick Dunn

    20. Ricky Watters

    21. Jamal Lewis

    Who's in, who's out?

Martin, Bettis and Tomlinson are likely in. Jamal Lewis, despite being behind in career yardage of some of those others will be more likely to get in because of his 2000 yard season. He may be seen in a vein similar to Earl Campbell who is only 30th in all time rushing yards.

    C. And here is the list for Career Receptions (numbers, not yards):

    2. Marvin Harrison

    3. Chris Carter

    4. Tim Brown

    5. Terrell Owens*

    6. Tony Gonzales*

    7. Isaac Bruce

    8. Randy Moss*

    9. Hines Ward

    10. Andre Reed

    12. Derrick Mason

    13. Tory Holt

    14. Keenan McCardell

    15. Jimmy Smith

    16. Muhsin Muhammed

    17. Irving Fryar

    18. Rod Smith

    19. Larry Centers

Who is in, who is out?

Those above and including Moss should be in (Carter, Brown, Harrison, Bruce, Gonzales). Ward and Reed are on the border. Below that, no.

    D. These are the non-kickers who have not made the HOF who are in the top 20 in career games played:

    14. Jim Marshall

    15. Trey Junkin

    17. Clay Matthews II

    19. Junior Seau

Who is in, who is out?

Marshall should be in imo, and perhaps will be someday. Seau has a high probabability of getting in. I would like to see Clay in, but it won't happen. Neither will it for the brother of the mad dog in a meat market.

    E. Finally, are there any kickers who you think should be elected to the HOF who have not been? Note: kickers that are in are Blanda, Groza, Hornung, Stenurud and that is it, and all but Stenurud played primarily at other positions.

If Stenurud is in then I think that both Morten Anderson and Gary Anderson should make it. The other possibility is Adam Vinatieri because of his several championship game winning histrionics.

Favre, Manning and Brady are shoo-ins. Brees still has some to prove. The rest didn't do enough or win enough. Purely having yardage shouldn't get you in the HOF (which is why Art Monk took so long).

Tomlinson & Lewis are shoo-ins. Curtis Martin & Jerome Bettis might make it if there is a weak field to pick from that year. The rest didn't do enough.

Harrison, Gonzalez, Moss, & Holt should make it. Carter, Brown, and Bruce will have a tough road to get in, but might. Owens won't because he's a dick. Ward probably will, even though he shouldn't.

I can see Seau making it. While I loved Matthews, I don't think his numbers support HOF. He had some mad heart, and was the soul of a couple different great defenses, but I don't think he's HOF material.

QB's Manning, Brady, Favre and Brees should all make it

RBs LT is a definite and Bettis and Martin should both make it as well.

WRs everyone up to Andre Reed should get in

Kickers - Just Vinateri should get in.

And Jamal Lewis definitly should not even sniff the HOF

  • No disagreement with your picks Gip. But regarding kickers- there's one omission. Ray Guy should be in. You have to make room for the greatest punter ever.

Well said. I agree. I didn't think about him, but then this was not to be comprehensive for all positions. I didn't include a specific category for OL, or Defense, or punters, or Kick Returners.
