Did i mention Haynesworth? i said we don't make offers to anyone that is the main problem you wouldn't know until a real superstar did come in free agency to the Browns but the fact is we have had 0 come here in 12 years.

  • I remember an old quote from Butchie (who just got canned for improprieties---shocker) about signing FA's. I've stated this before and I'll state it again, and those who know me some know I don't believe in FA. I believe in getting a few guys a year who can help, like Fuge last year, Watson and even Pashos.

Anyways, Butch said that signing multiple FA's is a dangerous game. Generally, you are overpaying for the actual talent return and you risk a guy getting hurt and really blowing your strategy. He said the biggest issue is guys coming in are not familiar with anybody, the systems, schemes, or what their role should be. Many times guys are afraid to be leaders given the fact they are new. On top of that, many of these guys just got paid for possibly the last time and aren't looking to bust much ass proving anything. This is especially true of FA's going to losing teams, which we always have been and are now.

Just some stuff to chew on. We are all guilty of wanting and dying to go window shopping every year for those big names, but it just isn't the way to do things. These guys are going to build through the draft, develop our talent and get the type of player we really want. It is not going to happen overnight, especially if done correctly. It is not the popular thing to say, but it is true. Doesn't mean we aren't going to sign anybody, we basically have to, but just shelling bucks out there in desperation isn't the way to go and never has been.

The Danald in Washington has been overspending for years and still doing it now, yet has gotten nowhere. I said awhile back no way would he let Moss go. There are no quick fixes in football, there is stability and planning the rosters for the future and stockpiling picks year after year.

    My two cents.

  • Too funny!

I'd love to argue but tomorrow there is surf so I'm done.

  • Great post Riff, the only problem i have with that is your basically saying we're to scared to make a big time contract because something might happen.... Free Agent stars goto teams that (read this) DO contend yearly or ARE trying to build a dynasty.

If you're always rebuilding... you fail to see that you are in the same loop as everyone else. No one in the United States has the Browns doing well or is even worried about the browns even with what i consider a weak ass schedule.

Las vegas 40-to-1 Odds: Cleveland Browns only 4 teams were worse than that. Know why? We only have 1 SuperStar on our team 7 Good Players and ohh 82 Bums i wonder why.

There is a time and place for FA's. One of the reasons we are in the position we are in is because of signing marginal guys to way more than they are worth. We have failed through the draft and had bad luck, so you can't say the draft isn't the way to go.

Free agency reeks of trying to win now and being desperate, you do this by stockpiling picks and having good FO people who are in touch with the coaching staff and the schemes. You set a precedent with the type of players you want, build a core foundation and when the pieces are basically in place, then you make a run for a big time guy.

When you wrap up all your coin into a few guys it catches up to you. We have had superstars here and didn't do shit, so we got rid of them to start over. Mangini started the core foundation, these guys are taking it and putting in the systems and schemes they want to run, now it is a matter of letting them do their thing. Running out and buying some dude like Weddle is not going to put you in the Super Bowl right now.

Free agency should be used smartly and with a plan for the future. This Young signing was excellent, we got a kid who is just getting comfortable with the switch to safety after playing corner. He is not a huge splash, but he may give us that cover safety we want for years to pair with Ward at a fraction of the cost of Weddle. That fraction of a cost translates to more players in the years to come, more money to sign our multiple picks, extend the guys we already have and go after more good and young FA's. It's cyclical. When you blow your wad like Phillip Savage it can bite you quick and put you right back to square one.

These guys are doing this right, let it finish. Let's not kill this thing with up front pressure to win now and then be left holding our testicles going "damn, we gotta start over again" in a couple years. We want to be good year after year, and you don't do that by going apeshit in free agency when you have a team to build.

LaCharles Bentley was a young all-pro center who signed, but unfortunately he got hurt. I also think for the past few years the staph infection scandal shyed away free agents from us.

  • I agree 100% with this male escort...

Its like heckert and holgrem don't want to sign a big name free agent because there afraid of the risk and the expectations.

Its like were on the 7 year plan... last year I cried for us to get a wr.. did we??? And how did that work out??

    I just don't get it.... ,

Players.????? Last time I checked we needed them... its not spending money to spend money when you need players..

    In gruden we trsut???

  • Two sides of a coin here the guys who keep screaming to make some moves and the guys always wanting to wait till next year.

Same things i heard in 2001, 2006, and still today it's like a broken record i heard this arguement before of why we don't make moves and always sounds worse.

Are we Happy being a Mid level to Back of the pack team every year? i hope all of you are not.

  • You're right. They should go after every big name on the market. The skins have it correct. Hell, I think they should sign em all before the actual FA starts tomorrow at 6pm too. Screw the rules and screw building through the draft. Who needs a team built the right way when you can have a one hit wonder team and maybe make the playoffs only to be knocked out by the third loss to Pitt! Right on OP!

    (facepalm)

  • I agree with both sides here we will stay in the Cellar if we dont make a push for at least a few guys in F/A ecspically with a team who has so many needs...You have to build through the draft though as well but you have to remember the draft only comes around once a year and so basically if you dont hit on every single player then you cant contend and how many rookies come in and make an immediate impact..Sometimes it takes 3 years for a player to be great and with how the Browns have been we havent been good for a long time..Im sorry to say but its time to win now not 3 years from now..

I like Heckert and hope things continue the way hes been building, we had a great draft last year. It wouldnt hurt to add a few Key guys through F/A to speed up the process though.

  • Totally agree Mikey last year was a good F/A for us and we need to at least pursue some key position players this year the same way who can help speed up the process a lil bit.

  • Who are still drinking that KOOLAID, this is not meant to offend anyone but only spoken as the truth. I posted this and i feel it's a fact it's not very very in depth but drives home a point.

I would say anyone who believes rebuilding only comes from the draft is xxxxing Retarded.... Cleveland has been rebuilding since we came back to the league in 1999 and we fans happily accept that excuse year after year.....

WAKE UP CALL kicking your playmakers off the team, and not signing any playmakers ever in free agency means everyone of your draft picks needs to be HITS and not misses basically your in a loop de loop of players, coaches, and systems we are all xxxxing stupid for eating this shit sandwiche for the last 12 years and thinking it tasted great.

Cleveland Browns you need to make offers in Free Agency and pick hits in the draft to be a good team overall .... I am always hearing we don't wanna offer max contracts to BigTime playmakers lemme hit you up on a fact WHAT BIG FREE AGENT HAS COME TO CLEVELAND FOR A SUBPAR CONTRACT? or even came to Cleveland at all.... F*** all you fans that keep accepting medicore teams and terrible excuses that everyone thinks are the best since sliced bread.

The Browns have lost nearly 75% of the total games we have played since 1999 plz start putting our leadership on Blast when it comes to making moves not every player comes like they say on KNR (Bargain basement deals) those guys don't exist.

Our leadership is basically brand new, and I think they're doing a pretty good job. We were only a couple plays away from having a winning season last year and very easily, due to a soft schedule, could end up around or above .500 this yr. I actually believe that your post is actually describing a formula for putting together a losing team and continuing the downward cycle. Look at the recent Super Bowl winners and tell me who on their team was a major contributor that was signed as a FA.

Green Bay - Aaron Rodgers, Clay Matthews, Donald Driver - all drafted

Pittsburgh - Rothlisberger, Mike Wallace, James Harrison, T. Polomalu - all drafted

In part, the biggest difference between winners and losers is their ability to scout talent coming out of college and getting the most out of their guys during their rookie contracts. Sure, a decent FA here and there can be helpful (ie, Plaxico Burress in NY, Randy Moss in NE) but you do not need to break the bank getting those guys. Actually, the reason we are always in the re-building mode is because we keep flopping on our FA signings.

I think your post has no truth in it, and has been posted about 2 yrs too late. Now, our leadership knows what they are doing and they will put a product on the field that will be fun to watch, will be competetive, and will win a decent number of games in 2011. Give them a couple more years and we will be winning more, but we must believe in H&Hs ability to draft for quality, find a gem in UDFA, fill gaps with young mid-level FAs, and wait to sign our homerun hitter until we know it is our year. Unfortunately, unless our guys really outplay themselves, 2011 is probably not our year weather we sign the best FAs out there or not...

  • Albino last time i checked Charles Woodson was a pretty big F/A and was considered the leader of that defense

Exactly. like i said, a FA here and there is helpful but you don't have to go all out each offseason to be successful. Look at Fujita, great signing, same type of signing for the Browns that GB did with Woodson. Get that one or two good vets for leadership and intangibles, but we really have some good leadership and, trust me, they will get a couple guys they to fill holes... people here need to chill out. typical Cleveland fans overreacting

  • I get what your saying but i dont think Fujita would be considered the same as Woodson was when he was signed, he was one of the top CB like Nnmadi is now.. But Fujita has been great for us i cant say that i dont love that pick up

When players like a Clay Matthews or James Harrison becomes Free Agents these are the type of guys you target away from the teams that drafted them this happens all the time ... The Browns don't make offers to what i would consider some of the best players in Multiple Seasons and say hey wait 3 years in our current rotation lets give Pat some draft's for his team and see what he does BRAH... oh shit i heard this story before (mangenius, crennal, etc.) Oh i guess we can accept it again.

Hell no, I ain't happy- don't know your age, but I'm running out of years. So I remember George Allen trying your philosophy- it worked once, and then sent the Redskins into the toilet for a decade. It's been tried- so go ahead- tell me where it's worked for more than a year.

We don't make moves because- frankly- we're not yet in a position to make moves. You really want to know why the Browns have sucked for the past decade? Crappy drafting. Let's see, Donovan McNabb, Brian Urlacher, LaDanian Tomlinson, Richard Seymour- all guys on the board when the Browns were on the clock for starters- and I could go on. The Browns have drafted exactly ONE legit Superstar - Joe Thomas- in 11 years- + a couple one hit wonders Braylon Edwards and Knievel Winslow- and that ain't good enough. Jury out on Joe Hayden and TJ Ward.

PS- we brought in LeCharles Bentley who at the time may well have been the premier center in the league, paid him a ton of money- and whoops never played a down in the regular season. And we did bring in Eric Steinback who has been more than adequate at LG for more than a few seasons.

Our competition in the AFC North is the Steelers and Ravens so I'll just sit and wait listening to the crickets chip while you rattle off all their big name FA signings over the last decade. Nah- the Steelers have consistently whipped the Browns asses because they picked up guys like Rashard Mendenhall, Hines Ward, Lamar Woodley, and Mike Wallace in the draft- in the lower rounds, and don't get me started about the Browns passing on Ben to take Knievel Winslow. We drafted Rahim Abdullah, "Small Change" Warren, crip Courtney Brown, Smokin' (weed) Willie Green, and jailbird Jeremiah Pharms. Which FYI is the big reason you don't take a flier on FAs with baggage- you want to pay them a few million while they're sitting in jail? And should I mention missed out right under our noses- FAs James Harrison and Charger superstar Antonio Gates?
