Hardesty Out Again
-
The rest of the draft and this years draft makes up for it in my opinion. Hell he picked two players this year who people said couldn't play in the 4-3 and both Sheard and Taylor are close if not up for DROY so far.
-
It is Heckerts fault for picking him. Come on people wanna praise Heckert when he drafts well but dont wanna call him out when his pick seems bad ? On the bright side, even if he was a bust we dont lose much ! We can cut him and get some other RB.
-
Sorry to hear about Hardesty. That's a bummer.
Have a good season.
-
Yah it's heckert's fault........whatever.
Maybe they should call Tiki.
trading picks to move up and take an injury prone RB would then be who elses fault...exactly?
-
If he was killing it everyone would say what a great pick it was. Look at Willis McGahee, he put up some good numbers for four years in a row on a somewhat bad team after his Fiesta Bowl injury that everyone saw. His later injuries were all different. Just like a knee injury is not the same as a torn calf muscle. Or a STRAINED HAMSTRING and sore throat and mid-week mid-season wedding.
If MH's injury was recurring than it could be called a bad decision but not when it's something different.
All I'm saying is you can't predict injuries.
-
Should have made Cedric Benson of Cinci an offfer he couldn't have refused. He would have only missed two games with his domestic violence issues but has stayed healthy,
efective on the field and crime-free otherwise
-
He's an NFL running back. Holy christ, what exactly do you expect? This is the most physically demanding position to fill in all of sports.
Torn calf has less than nothing to do with the knee which had him out last year.. he's not "injury prone" unless you're using that as a synonym for "an NFL running back."
And he's better than an average backup - Hardesty is at least decent. By way of comparison, maurice morris on Detroit is not good.
-
I would simply point out that Hardesty wasn't drafted to be a backup RB with the 60th overall pick in the draft. He was drafted before Hillis had his breakout year in 2010. Jerome Harrison was our best back in 2009 with 864 yards and it seemed that the Browns (Mangini regime) were never really sold on him as the long term starter.
Hardesty was a fifth year senior who had three knee surgeries before his senior year of college when he finally stayed healthy for an entire year and ran for 1345 yards. He recieved a medical hardship after getting only six carries as a freshman when he blew out a knee. Prior to his senior year he started only six games, so the injury history was there. So in five years of college he was able to start only 19 games. Then in his very first preseason game with the Browns he blows out a knee and was lost for the entire year. 75 carries into the 2011 season he tears a calf muscle. Some guys are just fragile.
I do give credit to Heckert for making some other good picks. But this one was questionable from the get-go considering the injury history and the cost to move up in the draft for him.

Hardesty did not have 3 knee surgeries at UT. He had 1. Took me about 30 seconds to find this.

Here is a link to cbs sports draft profile that says three. Perhaps the wiki source is only counting major acl surgeries and not arthroscopic procedures? My link
Possessing obvious talent but a troubling inability to remain healthy, Hardesty entered his senior campaign with only six starts in 36 career games and having never carried the ball more than 107 times in a season. He needed a healthy, breakout senior campaign to emerge as a legitimate NFL prospect. A breakout campaign is exactly what he produced.
Quickly impressing Lane Kiffin and his staff with his work ethic and toughness, Hardesty emerged as the starter over highly touted freshmen Bryce Brown. Averaging 21 carries per game, Hardesty rushed for 1,345 yards, the fourth highest total in Tennessee's history and only 119 yards short of Travis Stephens' record.
NFL teams will proceed cautiously with Hardesty. He has already undergone three knee surgeries, so his medical report will be as closely scrutinized as any prospect this year. When healthy, Hardesty has proven to be a legitimate workhorse with rare agility for a back his size. He leaves Tennessee with 560 career carries, the second highest total in school history.

every running back picked is a gamble (well for that every pick is a gamble). i'm surprised hardesty held up as long as he did this far into the season the way our line has no ability to open holes or block or pass protect etc.
heckert has done fine with his picks since becoming our GM (sans lavauo). the inactivity at FA is a little discouraging....only to bite when in dire need because of injury.
my bet is he'll do fine again next year hoping his boss will add something on the sidelines as in OC.

right...exactly...which further strengthens the arguments that trading multiple picks to move up and draft an injury prone RB may have been ill-conceived. he got a few games of abuse and his body gave out again. the guy is mr glass.

My link was not a wiki link. It came from the UT website. He may have had two arthroscopic procedures I do not know. If there has been for sure 3 procedures then that is likely what it is. I don't recall him having those procedures but that does not mean he didn't.

I'm on the fence between the two sides of the argument honestly. On the one hand, it's clear this injury isn't related to the problems out of college. But for some guys the tag "injury prone" is just true, no matter what position it is. Even if the injuries are unrelated for some reasons injuries always find them.
I actually liked what i saw out of ben obamawama (no idea how to spell his last name). Let's hope Hillis gets back pronto. Right now assuming hillis leaves i would love a richardson, OL top draft pick this year. trent is going to be a monster in the NFL, mark my words. next AP
