Ok I like Pontbriand and feel for the guy, but he has 1 job to do and has failed at it this year. I'm sure we can find another guy to hike a freaking ball.

Agreed. He himself admitted to being off....unfortunately in his position that costs games. U fail at the easiest position to make it in nfl someone's to be accountable!!!!

Watch alt of his snaps and they just haven't been Nfl quality. He has the Yipps.

Even the one that hit theleg. Where was that snap gonna end up if it got deflected to the holder

  • IMHO, the problem is more far reaching than JUST the long snapper. Our special teams are awful under this new ST coach. I also read where Pontbriand snapped 7 yards rather than the customary 6 so the ball always arrived to the holder laces up. If he was made to change to 6 yards, that would DRASTICALLY alter his delivery & spin on the ball. If that was the case, Pontbriand should have been left alone. I have a sneaky suspicion that was what may have happened.

When I see Pontbriand gone, Cribbs production down, blocked kicks, & poor coverage on returns, I have to ask what the common denominator was......Can we say, ST coach?

It sure makes me wonder. Long snapper is just a PART of special teams & I don't like what I see in the other "parts" either. Just my thoughts.

  • I was under the impression that it was always 7 yards back to the holder on FG tries? As long as I can remember it was always add 17 yards to the los to figure out how far a FG would be. I have never heard anything different until this week. Anyone else hear of this before?

  • A good snap and i can't see why it would matter

I stand corrected. I simply quoted what I read without first substantiating my information. I apologize.

I still think our STs suck this season. We'll see what happens from now on.

  • The only question that hasn't been asked yet is why did we ever let go our old ST coach. You know, the one that had our ST unit one of the best in the league, and currently has the 49ers ST unit one of the best in the league. Why isn't he still here? If you have something good going for your club, why change it?

  • What does 55 yards into the wind have to do with anything? That effects dawson, not the snapper. And when the snaps bad, Dawson has no chance......

and Dawson told Colt where he needed to get to...and Colt got there.

besides, if Dawson says he can make it from there who are we to dispute?? the guy booted the 1st 50 plus yarder into the damn net!

55 yards and into the wind or not, with a good snap it's a safe bet dude makes it.

*Mods should merge the other Pontbriand thread i started into this one.

  • 8years prior, ponty was never heard from because he was perfect....very rarely ever making a bad snap. Now all of a sudden, in year 9, he's erratic and unable to do the job he's done better than everyone else?

No....this reeks of murmur IMO. Our entire ST unit went from the best to atrocious in 1 year....someone sure does have to be accountable, bit you can bet ur bottom dollar this pathetic coaching staff will throw everyone else under the bus rather than man up and accept culpability. These are sleazy human beings running the browns.

that info i posted re: 6 & 7 yard punts was straight from Phil Dawson's lips>>mighta been last year when he said it. PD was pretty clear that RP snapping 7 yards was not the norm in the NFL, but because he was so ridiculously consistent -- like atomic clock consistent -- the pro (bullet proof consistency) outweighed the con (1 yard).

at the time Phil said it i think deep down he was looking for some validation for the extra yard no one ever knows about. like making sure when you see him kick a 54 yarder you know it's really a 55 (!).

i can't say for sure how many players snap 6 vs 7 yards in the League. maybe one of our lurking soccer fags knows for sure. 😉

Seeley was Specials Coach and Browns Assistant Head Coach. i doubt the big fat show was willing to undercut shhrrrmmrrrrrr's authority by retaining him.

and after the flubbed snaps the camera pans over to Ponty and both times he's sitting on the bench w/ his eyes closed like he's meditating--a totally bewildering expression for the moment--yet an expression that pairs perfectly with a guy burning up inside with the type of furious rage a person feels when you are told to do something you disagree with and think is a really bad idea...but your hands are tied and you are forced to do what they ask. like a subordinate that cannot even enjoy the satisfaction of an "i told you so".

i know that expression well, and i'll bet anything he was feeling something similar in both those moments.

    Here here.

It is the special teams coach who should have been canned. Far more egregious than those 1 or 2 bad snaps has been the the fact that these special teams have been playing like children wandering in the wilderness.

    I agree.

Ponti's snaps have been off.....punts snaps have been all over the place, but this still stinks of a regime looking to mitigate the record.

How about changing some coaches after the season??

Agreed. i liked the guy, but turn the page.

The guy from the Factory of Sadness video is going to have to get a new jersey.

  • I agree... snap the damned ball! This season is killing me. I hope we don't lose what good players we still have!

He should get a custom one or just wait then... i have lost track of how many jerseys ive gone through... I now just put duct tape and something in marker over my Edwards one. I am in the process of unstitching Quinn from my #10

yep, this is why I refuse to buy anything but the jersey shirts until there's a guy who actually sticks. The only jersey that is worth buying on our team is Thomas.

    Dime-a-dozen offensive lineman.

You could find a fatass drunk to clean his act up and do just fine at this position.

Perhaps the Browns are FINALLY realizing it is idiotic to pay these lardass offensive linemen big money.

All in all, this is a YAWN story.

    Long Snapper..... LMAO!

Its not that they released this guy so much as it clearly appears to many, including me, that he was indeed a scapegoat for the failures of this coaching staff to do a decent job with this team.

You may be right, it may be a big yawner that a long snapper was let go...but I have seen it elsewhere in my own situation.....the guys that are inept but screw up cover their asses by getting rid of others so they don't have to take the blame.

  • Zombo said:

His snaps were terrible this year. He got paid very well by the Browns to snap a football for nine years. Pointbriand wins.

He was very good for many years and now we are going to give a young guy from UCLA a shot. Everybody wins.

Even Eagles fans at my bar keep saying "you guys would be contending if your special teams weren't so bad."

It's not a scapegoat. It's accountability. After several good years. He failed at his job this year. Randy Moss got cut, Donovan McNabb got benched, Mike Shannahan got fired ... surely a bumbling long snapper's days are short.

I just wish Dawson grow his hair back, all this went awry when he shaved his head. And he looks like fucking Gazoo from the Flintstones.

    Z

I am not saying that Pontbriand should not have been held responsible....just that of all the special team fuckups, he had a hand in maybe 20-25% of them.

Is it fair to say that people around here can now see why they say special team are one third of the game? At least one third or more of the Browns losses have been directly attributable to special teams failures.

  • Zombo said:

    I'm disapointed.

I thought you were going to post a picture of Gazoo.

I don't actually remember Gazoo, but here you go:

And I'm sure you have plenty of room to call people fatasses don't you ghoolie? That being said I agree there's a thousand guys who can long snap. Too bad for him. Wonder how often long snappers actually get drafted.

I don't know why they canned the ST coach either, but one thing is for certain- when we went from a 3-4 scheme on D to a 4-3, there aren't as many LBs on the roster. The lost LBs were also special team contributors, so that's one reason, IMHO, why our coverage units sucked real bad the first few games (they have improved as the season has gone on).

It simply was a bad idea to break in a rookie head coach, a new offense, AND a new defensive scheme at the same time. Holmgren gambled & lost.
