It's pretty much guaranteed. You invest a first round pick on a QB...especially a top 10(maybe top 5) pick and it sets Ur team back a decade. The money and time you have to invest in a first round QB means not only are you rebuilding, but you also have to give him time to succeed which could be up to 5 years

If he fails in those 5 years you scramble to find a replacement in free agency and begin rebuilding all over again. By the time you get over the fear of drafting another first round QB so much time has gone by

It's not true for every position but QBs are an all-in type pick

You pick the face of Ur franchise for the next several years and it either works out or it cripples you

    Examples...Tim couch...Brady Quinn

First off, your whole argument hinges on the fact that RG3, Luck, or Barkley are busts.

Second, the investment has never been cheaper based on new rookie wages.

Last of all, you can't be set back anymore than we already are.

    Watch a game.

This argument assumes a first round QB being a bust but with the team the browns have now, they need way way more than a QB

Colt or Seneca is good enough to get the brownies through this stage of rebuilding

No they aren't franchise QBs but you don't draft a franchise QB when the rest of Ur team is garbage. The browns are terrible from top to bottom except for a handful of players like Joe thomas and Alex Mack.

Of course the browns are terrible...don't you want them to get better? Drafting a QB means Ur ignoring all the other issues that are far more pressing.

I watch every game...apparently more than you because you don't understand how to fundamentally build a team

that argument is so so wrong, wow. Look at every team that has gotten good, and there's always a clear pattern there. Despite the needs of the team, a franchise QB is need number 1. Do you think the colts were good before they drafted peyton? saints before the trade for brees? Falcons before Ryan? A franchise QB is the quintessential piece in framing a team in today's NFL, period. There's no argument you can make against it. Colt is a game manager QB and that type of QB is gone from the NFL. Without a guy who can sling the rock around that team is never going to win a championship. The only true exception to this right now is the 49ers and I think they'll be out before the NFC championship game. The argument that investing in a bad QB that ends up sucking is obviously true, it doesn't take a football guru to point out that genius piece of info. But nearly every starting QB in the NFL has been a high 1st round QB (Brady and Brees being the exceptions, and Brees was still early 2nd)

If you honestly think having a franchise QB isn't the most important part of a winning NFL team you have no business talking football. It's not ignoring other needs when QB is a need in and of itself.

Actually the colts were still bad with manning in his first seasons...why not give colt that kind of confidence? The saints also brought a stellar draft class in with drew who was not a draft pick...he was a free agent. The falcons were a competitive team before drafting Matt Ryan so Ur wrong about that one

first off...colt has great accuracy and that's the most important attribute for any QB in a west coast offense. He throws far too much to be just a game manager and this is only his first full season as a starter. Not only that but he has scrubs that he's throwing the ball to. Why not try and help a prior investment than start from scratch be drafting a completely new QB?

Colt and Seneca are both good enough to play in the NFL. QBs like Brady brees and manning don't come around very often so if Ur hoping for a guy like that keep dreaming. If you want a guy who can win games you already have it in colt McCoy. The problem is he has nobody to throw it to and nobody blocking for him

Joe Thomas and Alex Mack are great but 2 out of 11 guys on offense aren't going to carry a team to the playoffs

You build an offense and in many ways a team around a qb. You draft players for him, you design plays for him. He is the offense. If he sucks, the offense sucks. Stop acting like it takes a decade to build a team. You've bought too far into the Holmgrenomics.

They have 2 firsts. They can draft ANOTHER 1st round talent.

They have a second round QB right now. Why would they draft a first rounder this year? It's stupid to give up on a player...especially a QB after only 2 seasons

The browns could have a first round tackle and WR or linebacker or defensive end etc

Why waste a pick on a position that they've already addressed less than2 seasons ago?

If you draft your Qb for the next decade its not a wasted pick. McCoy(3rd round btw) will not be a wasted pick because he'll make a great back up. Holmgren who can not field this same team next year and keep his job, will not entrust his future to McCoy.

  • Ahahahahahaha first off...Seneca shouldve been starting the whole time

Secondly...the browns have far bigger problems to worry about than the QB. If they draft a QB next year it'll be another 10 years of disappointment.

I love hindsight. I agree we would have won more games this season if Wallace was the starter. He knows this system inside and out and at least is just as accurate as Colt is from what I've seen out of Colt this season.

I agree that at least Seneca is good enough to get us through rebuilding, but I think we should still look QB if there is one they like this season. It never hurts to sit a QB for a season or two regardless of where you draft them, there is just a huge stigma about sitting a high draft pick. If Shurmer and the FO can shut out all the cries from fans and media to start the 1st round QB then there should be no problem drafting a Barkley or RGIII with the our first pick and then spending the rest of the draft/next years draft getting people to put around them.

You have no freeking clue about anything. There is a reason Wallace is the backup here: he ain't very good.

And I say, if they draft a QB, it could very well be with a late round pick....and that pick becomes the new Brett Favre. Let's see, who could that be?:

Austin Davis, Southern Mississippi. Same school as Favre.

Yep it took some time alright. Oh yeah, and SOME REAL STARTING CALIBER QB TALENT to begin with!!!

Peyton and Drew were light years ahead of Colt at this point. You could see the superstar potential starting to show in their play. Never once has McCoy even given an iota of evidence that will ever happen with him.

Oh and don't go pull up some horseshit stat to make a point. Stats don't begin to tell that story. Colt will never ever never never ever never be Peyton. So if it takes 8 years for top tier Qbs to win SBs, we are wasting our time.

We will likely get our asses kicked so your poll is flawed

  • if we draft a qb next year, with all the holes we need to fill, then holmgren will be the biggest dumbest dick in nfl history.

  • I would like to add something here. Quarterback talk, for those who have no clue! The Browns have gone from stanky gutless clueless QB's for 10 years to Colt. Guess what maybe Colt is NOT the answer, but he plays with heart and came from winning which is now losing in Texas so that says something about Colt. He has ZERO weapons to work with, three useless running backs and a bunch of WR's who cannot get open and cannot catch

Colt may not be the answer to greatness, BUT IN NO WAY HE IS THE PROBLEM

and IF YOU ARE SO DUMB TO NOT SEE THAT, well quit submitting football analysis and start writing about which toilet paper serves your useless football brain ass best

  • How about this scenario: The Browns again trade down and go from about 8th into the early 20s of the first round, giving them an early 20s pick and a mid 20s pick with their ATL pick. Also, they get a 2d rounder in the mid 20s. That gives them 4 of the top 60 or so picks and they take:

    Zack Brown LB North Carolina

    Michael Floyed WR Notre Dame

    Jonathan Banks CB Miss. St.

    Kirk Cousins QB Mich St.

    What say you all?

  • yes. i agree with rich4dick. colt might not be the answer but he is serviceable. fill the holes. get some weapons. (get a coach) then let's judge him. there are qbs every year in the draft. we need WR, RT, OLB, DE, CB, S, RB etc. etc.etc. etc.
