Is Heckert Overrated?

The Browns Board

  • Heckert had a decent draft last year, it was solid, he did not screw it up.

It's pretty sad that a guy gets credit for doing just-okay here in Cleveland.

Until he hits on some Desean Jackson,LeSean McCoy type players I don't see why everyone is crowning this guy like he is the freaking savior.

We been eating shit so long a fucking rotten hamburger looks pretty damn good, I want a fucking steak.

List of his Picks since coming to Cleveland.

#1 Joe Haden - Had a solid rookie season with 6 interceptions. Took a step back in the second half of the 2011 season, allowed several big plays, had no interceptions for the season. Needs to take the next step in his third year as a pro bowl caliber corner to live up to #7 overall expectations.

#2 T.J Ward - Added some toughness to the secondary, not good in coverage. Ended the 2011 season injured after concerns of injury problems coming out of college.

#3 Montario Hardesty - Injury concerns coming out of college. Traded up to draft him, played in 10 of 32 nfl games,266 career rushing yards.

#4 Colt McCoy - not a Heckert pick, Holmgren made the decision to draft him.

#5 Shawn Lauvao - Would expect more from a third round pick. Decent depth player on the o-line. Not starter material.

#6 Larry Asante - no longer with team 5th round pick

#7 Carlton Mitchel - Has not seen much time, may or may not have potential, will find out if he ever gets on the field.

#8 Clifton Geathers - no longer with team

#9 Phil Taylor - Solid rookie year 57 tackles 4 sacks. Huge body in the middle on the 30th ranked team against the run.

#10 Jabaal Sheard - The rap on Sheard coming out of college was good pash rusher weak against the run. Started the season off at weakside end (the pass rushing side) But moved to strong side end shortly into the season. Undersized and not ideal for strong side end. Baffling. Maybe he cannot handle NFL Left Tackles. Put up great rookie numbers.

#11 Greg Little - Solid rookie season. Hopefully will continue to develop and improve.

#10 Jordan Cameron - Project player did not see much playing time in rookie season. 4th rounder.

#11 Owen Marecic - Suffered two concussion. Did not do a whole lot. Did not fill the shoes of fan favorite Larry Vickers.

#12 Buster Skrine - Played very well for a late round pick.

#13 Jason Pinkston - Switched to guard after playing tackle in college. Had a solid season for a rookie playing a new position.

Allowed only one sack but gave up 11 QB hits.

#14 Eric Hagg - Seventh rounder still on the team.

So what the hell do you want out of Heckert? A repeat of the Steelers 1974 draft, when they got 4 f##king Hall of Famers out of ONE draft, never happened before, will never happen again? To refresh your memory- First round- Lynn Swann. Second round- Jack Lambert. FOURTH round John Stallworth. FIFTH round Mike Webster. I could list the other guys they took- but I'd bet you a million bucks you couldn't name them without looking.

Hell's bells- any GM that can consistently draft like that is going to set up a dynasty. Point is NO GM is 100% perfect- EVER. Heckert's had his flubs- taking an injury flyer on Hardesty hoping he found another injury risk Thurman Thomas, and letting Vickers walk to replace him with a totally underwhelming Maricic.

So aw shucks, Heckert hasn't drafted a Suh or Greene yet- but they were off the Board when we drafted. Give the guy 1\2 a chance. If you look at the first two rounds, (assuming you had ESP) only minor screw ups were in 2010 were taking Ward instead of Gronkowski, and with the trade down (too far) taking Taylor instead of JJ Watt.

  • Moving Sheard to the strong side makes perfect sense.

    Look at it this way:

We have one pass-rushing identity, and that is Sheard. Mitchell cannot do it, and neither can anyone else on the roster. Not as consistently as Sheard, at least. Take into account that a LT neutralizes his man more often than not, and it logically makes sense then to put your worst pass rusher over the LT and your star over the RT, who's normally less-than-stellar in comparison with his leftside counterpart. Mitchell is going to have very little, if any, effect whatsoever on the game no matter where he is. If he's going to get swallowed by anyone who blocks him, why not put him over their best lineman? By putting our worst end over their best linemen, it in effect neutralizes that position.

Until we get another end, Sheard should stay on the strong side.

Pretty damn good. Hardesty is the only bust, although I'm not sure they have given up on him yet. Skrine and Hagg could be keepers, along with Pinkston those are some nice late round finds.

Beats the hell out of how we were drafting before Heckert.

    Zombo

If you go back a read interviews after the 2010 draft, it was Mangini who told Heckert to draft Lauvou.

In the past two drafts Heckert has picked 3 players that made the all rookie team. Sounds pretty good to me.

  • Zombo said:

Nine starters through the draft in two years. Cameron and Hagg could be starting next year as well if they develop, they haven't had an off-season yet.

    Zombo

Cameron could, or could move up past Smith and get some real playing time. I don't see Hagg surpassing any of our current safeties though. Honestly I think the best bet for players getting more playing time and possibly starting are Mitchel (depending) and Skrine at least as the nickle CB.

  • Looking over those picks shows me that Heckert has in fact had some very solid drafting. You also have to give him credit for maneuvering the Browns into the position that they now have 3 of the top 37 picks in the upcoming draft.

(well, their poor record was responsible for a lot of that....thank Shurmur)

Yea, in fact, thank Shurmur for NOT producing with what appears to be a good solid base of players.

ONLY the injury prone Hardesty is not a substantial contributor among the higher picks. 6th and 7th rounders will always be crapshoots.

  • I like Ward, but until he proves he can stay healthy, he is another Bob Sanders.

  • N Neo

I like Ward, but until he proves he can stay healthy, he is another Bob Sanders.

    Zombo said:

Well, Adams is a free agent. Hagg was getting playing time at the end of the year and played well. I think he'll be better than Osama Bin Young. Hagg could be a steal.

    Zombo

He was getting playing time at the end of the year because we had 3 safeties at that point. He could be a steal in the sense that he can become a good depth guy, but not in the sense of solid starter or pro bowler. His one problem is speed, he runs around a 4.65 and his game speed isn't much faster than that. Good instincts is about all he has going for him. Plus I think Adams is going to be one of the offseason FA priorities to resign. He did a very serviceable job at safety and like Young he has is very versatile and cane play CB as well.

    @neo said:

I think he has proven that he can stay healthy when it comes to his knee, which was his biggest injury concern coming out of the draft. His foot injury is really just unfortunate, something that really couldn't be foreseen.

  • If Ward can play at this level and stay healthy then he is anything but a bust.

    2) Despite what you think about him, the Browns just went 4 -12 with one of the easiest schedules in the NFL.

I like how everyone likes to make up their own facts. Just to let you guys know, real facts show that the Browns had the 6th hardest strength of schedule in the league this year. Even if you adjust the strength of schedule by eliminating the games that the browns played (meaning that you are not letting the 4-12 record strengthen the browns schedule as it gives more wins to our opponents) the Browns still had the 8th hardest schedule: http://www.fannation.com/blogs/post/1299408-nfl-strength-of-schedule-after-week-17-2011.

Did the Browns play some bad teams? Yes. But guess what, so did everyone else. So you can't use SOS as a reason to hate on Heckert. Plus there isn't a GM in the league who drafts good players 100% of the time. I keep repeating this but no one seems to get it. The key is drafting great players in the 1st and 2nd rounds and getting lucky on some of the rest. Heckert is 5 for 6 on drafting players in the 1st two rounds which is pretty damn good (Hardesty is the one bust as of now). When Heckert got here the Browns had two legit starters: Joe Thomas and Atyba Rubin. You are completely ignorant to think that a team with this little talent can become a playoff team in 2 seasons. After 2 drafts Heckert has given the Browns several more starters and has given us no reason to think that it can't continue. The more talent we get, the closer we get to contending..

  • girley doesn't need facts....it ruins his arguments.

Welcome back to the board richy rich. We haven't heard any of your repetitive BS in far too long.. 🙄

  • How is Heckert Overrated ?

Are people in Cleveland calling him a genius ? Are people in Cleveland calling him the amazing ? No. Everyone feels that he is a guy who is doing his job and is doing it right as far as the draft goes. Many Clevelanders have expresse their disappointment at him for not going more towards Free Agency.

He has his share of bashers. If anything, he is getting a pass for not failing in the draft. Is that being overrated ?

  • LOL 6th hardest Schedule in the NFL...FACT, know your facts before you bash a top 10 defense

    Bengals- 9-7 playoffs

    Colts- 2-14

    Dolphins-6-10

    Titans- 9-7

    Raiders 8-8

    Hawks- 7-9

49ers- 13-3 could go play for Super Bowl

    Texans- 10-6 Playoffs

    Rams- 3-13

    Jags- 5-11

    Bengals- uhh playoffs

Ravens-12-4 could go to the Super Bowl, playoffs

    Steelers- 12-4 playoffs

    Cards- 8-8

Ravens- Second best record in the AFC

Steelers- Second best record in the AFC

So we played 8 out of 16 games against teams that went to the playoffs, and we played 2 out of the 4 teams remaining with a chance to go to the Super Bowl

10 out of 16 with a .500 record or better

14 out of 16 against teams with a better record than us

    131-99

    Yea thats a eay Schedule

As I said most Browns fans are Morons

In the past two drafts Heckert has picked 3 players that made the all rookie team. Sounds pretty good to me.

I am pretty sure Ward also made all rookie team which would actually make 4 players.

As far as the playmakers argument being made by the Queen and her jester ...

You gals are right we do need play makers, but when Heckert took over we pretty much needed everything. Heckert chose to mainly focus on the defensive side of the ball the last 2 drafts though. Low and behold the defense has been better then then in years past.

He also did take a gamble on a couple playmakers in round 2 of each draft in Hardesty and Little. Hardesty I think is a bust. I don't think it takes a genius to see that as he can't stay healthy. Little I think could be a very productive WR. It just takes some time for WRs to develop at the pro level. Especially second round WR's. Just be patient with him. I can only think of one WR off the top of my head that wasn't drafted in round 1 and was a 1000 yrd WR in his rookie year and that is Colston ... and he just barely broke the 1000 yard mark and had a great QB.

And how did playmakers in the rounds 1 and 2 work for us in the past? Tim Couch, Willian Green, KJ, Q, Andre Davis, Dropcutt, Braylon,Robo,MoMass ... do you guys miss any of them?? The only 1 I honestly could say I miss (or atleast did miss) was KWII and was he worth giving Detroit a free second rounder to move up 1 spot and have to wait 2 years for him to play??

Football isn't just about playmakers or just about fatass lineman. It is about both. It takes 11 guys working as a TEAM on each side of the ball every game. For the most part with the exception of the QB everybody is just as important as the next. When Heckert took over he had about 3-4 real legit non ST quality starters (Rubin, JT,DQJ and Mack)out of the 22 he needed and no depth. Now he has a solid 10-12 quality starters (Ward, Haden, Taylor, Sheard, Little, Watson, Hillis) and some decent depth guys (Moore,Fuj,Gocong) and some intriguing prospects (Cmaeron, Mitchell, Skrine, Hagg)

If the front office can make a decent splash and bring in the RIGHT FA's and Heckert continues to draft quality first and second round picks we will improve pretty quickly.

  • LOL 6th hardest Schedule in the NFL...FACT, know your facts before you bash a top 10 defense

    Bengals- 9-7 playoffs

    Colts- 2-14

    Dolphins-6-10

    Titans- 9-7

    Raiders 8-8

    Hawks- 7-9

49ers- 13-3 could go play for Super Bowl

    Texans- 10-6 Playoffs

    Rams- 3-13

    Jags- 5-11

    Bengals- uhh playoffs

Ravens-12-4 could go to the Super Bowl, playoffs

    Steelers- 12-4 playoffs

    Cards- 8-8

Ravens- Second best record in the AFC

Steelers- Second best record in the AFC

So we played 8 out of 16 games against teams that went to the playoffs, and we played 2 out of the 4 teams remaining with a chance to go to the Super Bowl

10 out of 16 with a .500 record or better

14 out of 16 against teams with a better record than us

    131-99

    Yea thats a eay Schedule

As I said most Browns fans are Morons

THANK YOU! That weak schedule shit was getting old

  • Heckert was good while at Philly, he's doing a good job here. As always, the question is "Who do you have in mind who is BETTER than him" - not just "is he what I think I want today."

He can't fix the entire team at once, and this thread's bizarre attempts to blame everything on him [Who here remembers how horrible the Browns were in 2009?] luckily don't fly with either Holmgren or Lerner.

Marecic was a miss due to the concussions, we'll probably have to draft/FA another FB pretty soon. Cameron, Lauvao, Asante, Geathers were misses. Hardesty might be a miss, we'll see. McCoy in the 3rd was a good pick.

The analysis of the GM has to be what was thought of him AT THE TIME - geathers was a good try for a 7th rounder, Asante was thought to be good at the time, Lauvao/Cameron were highly rated, Marecic was tied for the top FB rating in the draft.

Rich and Ghoolie: If offensive talent was so important, why are the Cowboys, Saints, and Packers at home right now? Get out of here with that "skill positions are the only important thing" BS. Both of you are wrong - get over it. Can't wait to see more of your idiotic spin. Thank God Holmgren doesn't listen to your constant bleating.
