Here is some trivia roughly based on "Traditions". See what you can do:

    1. The field on which the Cleveland Browns play football is THE field on which the NFL has been playing football the longest (even though a new stadium was built up around it.).

Which field has been in use the second longest?

    2. Who was the last team to win the Ed Thorp Memorial Trophy?

    3. ABC's Monday Night Football is no longer (replaced by ESPN Monday Night Football and NBC Sunday Night Football). The Browns played any number of times, but which two (2) teams did the Browns play the most on ABC's MNF? (4 times each)

    4. Due to WWII, the NFL played no games on Thanksgiving Day for 4 years 1941-1944. On 11/22/1945 however, the Lions were allowed to host another Thanksgiving Day game since before the war. Which team did they play? (and lose to)

    5. There was a period in NFL history in which segregation was mandatory, i.e. by rule no black players were allowed. What were these years of official segregation?

    6. What do all these teams have in common: Chargers, Rams, Dons, Buccaneers, Raiders, Wildcats.

    7. Besides the Browns and the 49ers, and possibly the Colts, there is another current NFL franchise that is technically a continuation of another AAFC franchise. Which team is that?

    8. Officially, only the Chicago Bears and the Arizona Cardinals are considered "Charter Franchises" of the National Football League having played since the inaugural season in 1920. (Packers came in in 1921). However, there is another current NFL franchise that does unofficially trace its lineage to another 1920 Charter NFL franchise. Name the current NFL team that does this, and the charter NFL team if you can.

    9. In 1932 the NFL played with the fewest teams in its history...8 teams. Six of those teams are current NFL franchises, and two are not.

    A. Name the six current teams that played in 1932.

    B. Name the city (s) in which the 2 other teams played that no longer exist.

    10. Nickname Tradtion. Give the team (all current) with which the following nicknames are associated.

    A. Bulls On Parade

    B. The Dome Patrol

    C. The Evil Empire

    D. Jet Blue

    E. The SWAT Team

    F. No Name Defense

    G. Grits Blitz

    H. Fort Knox

    I. The Bay of Pigs

    J. The House of Pain

    K. The Rockpile

    L. The Sea of Red

    M. K-Gun

    N. Tootsie Rolls

    O. Flying Elvii

    P. Les Mouflons

    Q. The Seven Squared.

          Answers:

Which field has been in use the second longest?

While the football field on which the Browns play has been in use by the NFL essentially since the Cleveland Rams began play there in 1937, the second longest is Lambeau Field in Green Bay, in use since 1957.

          2. Who was the last team to win the Ed Thorp Memorial Trophy?

The Minnesota Vikings won the award in 1969, which was granted to the winner of the National Football League title game from 1933-1969.

          3. ABC's Monday Night Football is no longer (replaced by ESPN Monday Night Football and NBC Sunday Night Football). The Browns played any number of times, but which two (2) teams did the Browns play the most on ABC's MNF? (4 times each)

The Oilers and the Dolphins. And FYI they had a 1-3 record against each on MNF.

          4. Due to WWII, the NFL played no games on Thanksgiving Day for 4 years 1941-1944. On 11/22/1945 however, the Lions were allowed to host another Thanksgiving Day game since before the war. Which team did they play? (and lose to)

          The Cleveland Rams

          5. There was a period in NFL history in which segregation was mandatory, i.e. by rule no black players were allowed. What were these years of official segregation?

The years were 1934-1945. Prior to 1934 there were several black players in the league. (Fritz Pollard was a star for the 1920 NFL Champs Akron Pros, and was later a coach).

It was the racist owner of the Washington Redskins, George Preston Marshall, who pushed for and got segregation as a league wide policy in 1934. It only held though until after WWII when several black players were picked up by NFL teams, and numerous black players were on the Rival AAFC teams. For George Preston Marshall's own team however, he refused to integrate until 1962 when Congress decreed that his team could not use municipally owned Griffith Stadium (later RFK stadium) unless he integrated..

          6. What do all these teams have in common: Chargers, Rams, Dons, Buccaneers, Raiders, Wildcats.

They all played in Los Angeles at some point. The Rams moved from Cleveland to LA. The Raiders moved back and forth from Oakland to LA. The Chargers began their existance as the LA Raiders (and some think they may end up back there). The Dons were the LA entry in the AAFC. The LA Buccaneers were actually an early NFL team, playing one season, 1926, and going 6-3-1. The Los Angeles Wildcats were a pro football team that played in an early version of the AFL, in 1926. Of course there were also the LA Express of the USFL, and the LA Xtreme of the XFL.

          7. Besides the Browns and the 49ers, and possibly the Colts, there is another current NFL franchise that is technically a continuation of another AAFC franchise. Which team is that?

The now St. Louis Rams. When the AAFC and the NFL merged, three separate franchises were taken in, the Browns, 49ers, and Baltimore Colts, the LA Rams and the LA Dons did an actual merger. No other defunct AAFC teams merged, rather their players were merely split up and sent to existing teams. E.g. the NY Giants and the NY Bulldogs split players of the former NY Yanks. The Browns got some players from the Buffalo Bills, but the Rams and Dons actually merged operations...so techically they can still be the St. Louis Ram-Dons.

It is the Indianapolis Colts which can trace its lineage to the Dayton Triangles. I will provide a further explanation in a follow up post.

          9. In 1932 the NFL played with the fewest teams in its history...8 teams. Six of those teams are current NFL franchises, and two are not.

          A. Name the six current teams that played in 1932. The NY Giants, the Green Bay Packers, the Chicago Bears, the Chic/St.Louis/Ariz. Cardinals. The Detroit Lions then known as the Portsmouth Spartans, and the Washington Redskins then known as The Boston Braves.

          B. Name the city (s) in which the 2 other teams played that no longer exist.

They both played in New York City and were the Brookly Dodgers and the Staten Island Stapletons. Note, of the 8 NFL teams in 1932, 3 were in NYC. The following year 3 new teams were added: the Philadelphia Eagles, the Pittsburgh Pirates nka Steelers and the Cincinnati Reds, who later folded.

          10. Nickname Tradtion. Give the team (all current) with which the following nicknames are associated.

          A. Bulls On Parade the 2011 Houston Texans

          B. The Dome Patrol The Saints of the 80s

          C. The Evil Empire The current New England Patriots

          D. Jet Blue The 2011 NY Giants

          E. The SWAT Team The 1988 Cincinnati Bengals

          F. No Name Defense The 1970s Miami Dolphins defense

          G. Grits Blitz The late 70s Atlanta Falcons defense

          H. Fort Knox The early 1980s Buffalo Bills under HC Chuck Knox

          I. The Bay of Pigs The 80s/early 90s Tampa and Green Bay "rivalry"

          J. The House of Pain The Astrodome under the Jerry Glanville coached Houston Oilers

          K. The Rockpile Buffalo's War Memorial Stadium

          L. The Sea of Red The Kansas City Chief fans

          M. K-Gun The Buffalo Bills under Jim K-Gun Kelly

          N. Tootsie Rolls The Cincinnati Bengals, for their uniforms

          O. Flying Elvii New England Patriots because the guy on their helmet logo looks like Elvis in a Tricorner hat.

          P. Les Mouflons Translated from French means "The Rams"

          Q. The Seven Squared. 7x7= 49. The 49ers.

Origin of the ColtsThe Colts franchise was officially created in 1953, but can trace its history to before the NFL actually began; its earliest predecessor was the Dayton Triangles, a founding member of the NFL that was originally created in 1913. That team went through the following changes:

The Dayton Triangles relocated to Brooklyn and were renamed the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1930.

The Brooklyn Dodgers changed their name to the Brooklyn Tigers in 1944. In the same year, the Boston Yanks were founded.

The Brooklyn Tigers and the Boston Yanks merged on a temporary basis in 1945, becoming the wartime "Yanks".

The Brooklyn Tigers were canceled by the league as a separate franchise at the end of the 1945 season, and the team's temporary merger with the Boston Yanks was made permanent. The Tigers' former owner founded a parallel team in the rival All-America Football Conference (AAFC), the New York Yankees.

The Miami Seahawks of the AAFC were purchased and relocated to Baltimore and renamed the Baltimore Colts in 1947. This version of the Colts wore green and silver and were brought into the NFL in 1950, but the franchise folded at the end of the season.

The Boston Yanks moved to New York in 1949 and became the New York Yanks. They absorbed much of the roster of the AAFC's New York Yankees team the next year.

The New York Yanks moved to Dallas in 1952 and were renamed the Dallas Texans.

The Texans become a road team halfway through the 1952 season and were dissolved shortly thereafter.

The Dallas Texans franchise was reorganized and moved to Baltimore on January 23, 1953. They adopted the name Baltimore Colts, but kept the Texans' team colors of blue and white.
