New York Vs. Boston (Ne)

  • This year the Super Bowl again matches up the New England Patriots vs. the New York Giants.

(for purposes of this...and for all intents and purposes, the New England Patriots are Boston's team). In the history of the 4 major league sports in America, the following is the list of times that the cities of Boston and New York have been matched up in the finals of each sport...World Series, NHL/WHA, ABA/NBA Finals or Super Bowls/NFL/AFL/AAFC Championships:

1912 The Boston Red Sox defeat the New York Giants (nka San Francisco Giants) 4 games to 3 in the World Series

1916 The Boston Red Sox defeat the Brooklyn Robins (nka the Los Angeles Dodgers) 4 games to one in the World Series

1929 The Boston Bruins defeat the New York Rangers 2 games to 0 in the Stanley Cup finals. (at that time it was a best 2 of 3 playoff)

1972 The Boston Bruins defeat the New York Rangers 4 games to 2 in the Stanley Cup finals.

1986 The New York Mets defeat the Boston Red Sox 4 games to 3 in the World Series (can you say Bill Buckner)

2007 The New York (football) Giants defeat the New England Patriots 17-14 in Super Bowl XLII.

and that is it. This is only the 7th matchup from teams from the 2 cities.

Note: At this time, the teams from NY and Boston can no longer meet in the Finals of the NHL or NBA....see the fact that the NBA has never had a NY/Bos. matchup....because the teams from those 2 cities all play in the same conference. Assuming the alignment of the sports stay as they are NY/Bos finals are only possible in the NFL or MLB.

  • Additional note:

New York and Boston are #s 1 and 3 in most total championships in major North American team sports. Only Montreal with numerous championships in hockey only stand between them:

New York City area teams (which includes those teams in NJ and Long Island) have won:

    A. 8 football championships (7 by Giants, 1 by Jets)

    B. 35 baseball titles (27 by Yankees, 5 by Giants, 2 by Mets, 1 by Dodgers)

    C. 11 hockey titles (4 by the Rangers, 4 by the Islanders and 3 by the New Jersey Devils)

    D. 4 basketball titles (2 NBA by Knicks, 2 ABA by Nets

for a total of 58 championships in the 4 major sports

Boston/New England area teams (which includes nearby Providence RI) have won:

    A. 4 football championships (3 by Patriots, 1 by Providence SteamRoller)

    B. 17 basketball titles (all by Celtics)

    C. 6 hockey titles (all by Bruins)

    D. 8 baseball titles (7 by Red Sox, 1 by Braves)

for a total of 35 total championships in the 4 major sports.

Teams from Montreal have won 40 Stanley Cups, but if you only include NHL era Stanley Cups, Montreal's total goes down to 28 titles....which would then put New York and Boston #s 1 and 2 on the titles list.

  • FYI, cities that follow NY, Montreal and Boston in total team titles of 5 or more are:

    Chicago 26

    Detroit 22

    LA/Anaheim 20

    Philadelphia 17

    Toronto 16

    Cleveland/Akron/Canton 15

    Pittsburgh 15

    San Fran/SJ/Oak 14

    St. Louis 13

    Green Bay 13

    Ottawa 10

    Baltimore 8

    Dallas/Ft. Worth 8

    Minn./St. Paul 7

    Wash. D.C. 7

    Cincy 5

    Edmonton 5

    Miami/Ft. Lauderdale 5

  • I've been stat hunting a little bit, and I don't see any reason to think this won't be a hotly contested match.

Right now, the Pat's are a 3 point favorite. I could see it drift even closer, this week.

I'll say the Giants will win, 31-28.
