The Black Keys are popular, but they're not on the same level as Green Day, not even close. They might be among the most popular bands in the game now, but their popularity and longevity come nowhere near Green Day's. I wasn't trying to attack older music by any means, but too many of these guys are past their primes. Daltrey's singing was awful when The Who had the half time show; his voice is shot. I don't want to see that. I think a third of your list would be artists who were once great singers but their voices are toast.

Plus, you're going to put REM on that list but exclude Green Day? Since you love stats so much, here you go.

Made the Billboard 200 Albums of the Year Chart in: 8 times

Made the Billboard Hot 100 Songs of the Year Chart in: 2 times

Made the Top Artists of the Year Chart in: 1 time

Made the Billboard 200 Albums of the Year Chart in: 10 times

Made the Billboard Hot 100 Songs of the Year Chart in: 1 time

    Guess which band is which.

It doesn't matter, Green Day does not have cache with the pop music crowd....and the Super Bowl is all about the Top Pop.

    Albums don't mean shit.

If that were the case then Jethro Tull and Procul Harum would the shit.

They aren't when it comes to POPULAR Music.

You are far more likely to see the following long before you see Green Day:

Katy Perry, Tiny Canadian Pussy Douche, Eminem, Lady Gaga, Rihanna, Miley Cyrus, Mariah Carey, Beyonce/Jay-Z, Kelly Clarkson, J Lo, Adele, Alicia Keys, Taylor Swift....hell, even Snoop Dog long before you see Green Day.

Sorry, that is just the way it is. Geen Day may be better musically than everyone of them...If I gave them enough of a listen I might like them better than every one of them...but that is not going to give them the pop music stones to get on the Super Bowl halftime show....as the lead act.

They may get a support role, like Ce Lo Green and those others did to Madonna...or, maybe in 25 years after they have been inducted into the RRHOF and have become a nostalgia act they may get the SB gig. But not now.

Yeah, I forgot that the super bowl isn't for the football fans, so you have a point there. That being said, I think you are still giving Green Day wayyyyy less credit than they deserve.

Also. No way in hell I want to see a neutered rap show in it. Though Eminem and Nate Dogg performing Till I Collapse would be sick.

  • @hoorta said:

Exactly Gip- and you have it nailed. Those who are promoting Greenday may possibly be letting their personal preference in music color what the guys who call the shots for SB entertainment percieve as "broad appeal", just as those who are calling for a Rapper. Usher is about as far as they're going to go in that direction. Agreed about Beyonce (good choice there) and Bowie getting a show before Greenday. Personally, I wouldn't mind Ozzie Ozbourne or Metallica, but that's not what the SB Halftime show is about- and the powers that be would be deathly afraid either would accidentally (or intentionally) drop a few F-bombs during the show. LOL- the up and comers will get their shot when they're about as old as Madonna. 🙂

And regarding Neil Young- for the young'uns. He's in the R&R HOF for a reason. My best friend is a certified Rustie and has about everything Neil's ever done- and it's a lot. Admittedly, some of his newer stuff isn't very good- I thought Greendale pretty much sucked, and he's slowed down some (had a minor stroke) but when Greenday can match his body of work- they may get a shot- though personally if they're going to put a punk (or semi-punk) act up there- my money would be on the Pretenders first. .....

    Neil Young Discography.....

Again, its you guys turning it into personal preference. All I'm saying is green day is more likely to do a halftime show than many of gippers picks. Not that green day is better. Also the rock and roll hall of fame is a lot of bullshit.

Well the R&R HOF is a lot less BS than the Grammys- Milli Vanilli anyone?

Problem is- you sell enough CDs\downloads you become mainstream. Hell, I've been looking for the next Hendrix for 40 years. Stevie Ray Vaughn came close. Guys like Maumstein, McGlauglin, Steve Vai, and Tom Morello get about zero airplay mainstream- so blame the damn commercial radio stations for that lapse.

Really guys- I DON'T need to hear "Stairway to Heaven" for the 10,000th time. Can we hear the old guys new stuff for a change?

Really? I would wager that 10 times more people know Neil Young's music than know Green Day's music. What rock have you been living under?

I didn't say Green Day would be good for the Super Bowl haltime show, read again. I'm a fan of Neil Young, Cortez the Killer being my favorite. He wouldn't be good for the Super Bowl halftime either.

The problem would be a lot of Neil's Stuff is either too political, or too long (don't need no damn controversy @ the SB) . Ohio for starters. Hmmm what could he play? Mr Soul? OK. Like a Hurricane? Great song, way too long. Ditto on your pick of Cortez the Killer. My my (into the Black)- political. Cowgirl in the Sand is too long and too mellow. Emperor of Wyoming would appeal to the C&W crowd. Rocking in the Free World is again political. F**k'in Up is a great song, it would get nixed by the Politically correct censors.

  • then this guy who can do a david gilmour playing upside down amd whistling dixie...doyle braham

actually, and not to be a smartass, but there's a few folks that can. 🙂

Tom Morello Blows Springsteen off the forking stage. Geezeze Louise where the hell have you been hiding all these years?

Steve Vai ain't 1\2 bad, and neither is his bass player or Robert Cray. 🙂

I think you messed up your link- if you meant Doyle Bramhall, yeah, that's damn impressive. As a left handed guitarist myself, Doyle flipped a right handed guitar upside down and played it ass-backwards in this song. It's incredibly hard to do, much less do well. (And Ghoolie, don't go giving me shit that it's only E tuned.)

  • I think she did a fine job. It was well produced, well executed and who cares if there is some lip sync going on?

As much as I love paul, the vocal processing was embarrassing and that was in preproduction.

Take a look at the youtube from 2 years ago annual see the camera is position as to where you can not see the mouth at any time.

Madonna, love her ir hate her, certainly has had a string ok well written and well produced hits.

All true. Most of his mainstream stuff is too political, sans Old Man, Cinnamon Girl, and Heart of Gold. I just don't see Cinnamon Girl being played at the SuperBowl half time show.

He could perform Southern Man at a show in New Orleans, and ask Lynyrd Skynyrd to be his backup band.

Or do down by the River, and be charged with domestic violence..

Rock and roll is dead, and the R&R HOF is a joke, Madonna and the Beastie Boys get inducted before Rush? The only guitarist worth his salt that gets airtime nowadays is John Mayer, and he sure as hell ain't popular for his technical skill.

  • Almost no 1 among the most famous rock and roll stars are known for their technical prowess.

You'd be lucky to think of a small few hit songs with masterfully played parts.

That's 1 of the things that makes it rock and roll in the first place.

Comfortably Numb, Tom Sawyer, Layla, While My Guitar Gently Weeps, Barracuda? Would these songs be nearly as great without their respective solos? I don't think so. I think to be a good artist, you have to be either good at making catchy riffs or you can play the hell out of your instruments. If you want to be a great artist, in my opinion, you've gotta have both. I realize this doesn't always coincide with popularity. But what's Queen without Brian May? Billy Idol without Steve Stevens? Most people probably don't have any idea who those people are, though.

    the panties are dropping @6:12
  • Steve Stevens did the fucking Top Gun Anthem. I think he is among the most underrated guitarists.
