  • I dont understand why we keep overpaying to keep our own guys. I am all about taking care of the guys in house but Gocong is making like 6 mil and now Jackson will be making 8.5 per. Where does this put us cap wise? If we had 11 mil at the end of the season and we signed Jackson for 8.5 and were working on a deal with hillis for some where around 5 we would be over the cap.

  • Not exactly...

You have to remember that the resigns' 2011 salaries helped set that cap, so it's just the increments over their 2011 pay that eat into the room.

Plus lots of moves yet to come...

  • Appreciate it Tour2ma.

I looked up some of the cuts we may make this offseason

    Stienbach- saves 4.5 mil

    Pashos- saves 3 mil

    Wallace- saves 3 mil

    S.Brown- saves 4 mil

    Fujita- saves 4 mil

18.5 mil on top of what we have looks pretty nice.

  • until you have to spend that money to replace those players.

To keep a guy with 158 tackles, WTF.

  • People are idiots and this thread is full of them. Why do we pay perfoming plays money they earned. How stupid we give this guy any guaranteed money at all. This guy is making 19 million guaranteed over 5 years, he has to earn the rest. Plus if he does get injured, cut him lose and save some of that 19 million. If he ends up making that whole 46 million then he will have performed at a high level and stayed healthy and I am fine with that.

  • If we franchised Jackson we would have been paying him 7.7 mil, does Jackson belong in the list of names in the top 5 LBers? Not a chance, but we pay him like he is a franchise player.

I dont think Jackson is a bad player but his stats dont match his game. He doesnt create plays, hes not disruptive, he makes alot of slop tackles.

Keep in mind we were 30th in the league against the run last year, some of that falls on the shoulders of the MLB.

funny how pro football had him ranked as the 4th best MLB against the run last year and how he lead all MLB in tackles for loss isn't it.

  • Check MLB off the list!

Draft or trade for a FAST OLB.

Fujita is nearly as old as me and Maiva, well, his name just reminds me of Peter Maivia, the Rock's grandaddy.

That and he is NOT fast.

    And Maiva's Great Grand Daddy.

    ok....imma say this slow.

to determine an ACTUAL cap hit, it is more complicated than [total cost/#years]. you do not simply arrive at 8.5 million by doing simple math and start blasting away like you know whats going on. guaranteed money, roster bonus', signing bonus', incentives hit and affect the cap in different ways in different times.

for a franchise tag, 7.7 is GUARANTEED MONEY and hits the cap immediately. we have DQ for 5 years....5 years of GUARANTEED MONEY @ 7.7million per year (and im not even prorating the increases) is 38.5 million dollars. since your so good at math, you can see 19 is roughly half of 38 million.

the rest of the money is NOT guaranteed.

    so please, continue....

  • This is a great first move to this off season. If DQ walks we have another hole to fill.

Hopefully now we franchise Dawson if we can't work out something for a couple years(not sure if you franchise a guy back to back years??)

  • ^^yes!

just because a player isn't completely dominant at their position does not mean they are not a good player deserving of a paydday.

jackson always played his ass off, but i admittedly hated him in the 3-4. he really is suited much better in a 4-3 for one, and he should continue to excel as he learns the system better. guys get injured...it happens, and we often assume that once a player is labeled injury prone, he'll always be. this is true with many a player, but not all. dunno if DQ fits that bills, but i do know after tearing both pecs, he came back on a trial contract, played his ass off, had one of his best seasons as a brown.

i hope this DQ hate is minority, because we finally have a guy with some talent that absolutely loves cleveland and wants to play here. that needs embraced, because being bitter isnt healthy.

  • DQJ fits well into the browns 4-3 defense like a custom glove but has never been great at shedding blockers and because of it he was often targeted and taken out of the mix easily at times, he has excellent awareness and instinct and should improve in this defense now that he has shaken off the rust, he is by far the least of my worries as far as our LBs go..

DQJ has very good instincts on where the ball is going on the ground but was too often blocked out in route to help our less than stellar left and right OLBs that earned their payday laying on their backs as neither can hold their own long enough for support to arrive..

If he can improve his block shedding/block avoidance dqj will help stabilize the defense and will challenge for a probowl spot..

As you can tell i think this was a good move by the regime..

On a side note after tj ward was injured our run defense quickly destabilized as young is a bad FS but an unforgivably awful SS..

A team is only as strong as its weakest link..

  • IMHO, this was another solid move. This regime has shown that they will cut dead wood as needed & pay to keep the viable players. What may be most impressive is that players like Joe Thomas & DQ have CHOSEN to stay here rather than opt for free agency where they would have been popular targets for a number of already good teams. I love the display of loyalty (from players AND FO) & it shows that the players are buying into managements philosophy & goals. It ain't the same as BHH (Before Holmgren & Heckert). So far, we have had 2 solid drafts & some very good contract extensions. I am really pumped for this year's free agency period & draft.

Ok, true confessions time. I saw Peter Maivia wrestle in Wheeling, WV in the 70s. I was a kid and it was a trip. He had more tattoos than the entire population of WV combined.

Wonder if the Rock can play tight end? Maybe LB?

He played DE for the U and won a national championship. He eventually lost his spot to Warren Sapp after he suffered a sever injury that eventually ruined his chance at playing professional football.
