Another thread pointed out to me that in the 1970s there are only 5 QBs from that era that are in the HOF. I thought that seemed like very few, so I went back and looked at the HOF QBs and found that 5 per decade seemed to be standard.

So here is the list of QBs per decade that have made the HOF. In a few cases a players career obviously straddled a couple of decades, so I will point those out. This is just since the 40s since prior to that the Halfback/QB position was often a mixed position:

1940s: Sid Luckman, Sammy Baugh, Bob Waterfield

    40s/50s straddler: Otto Graham

1950s: George Blanda, Bobby Layne, Norm Van Brocklin, Y.A. Tittle

    50s/60s straddler: John Unitas

1960s: Len Dawson, Sonny Jurgenson, Joe Namath, Bart Starr (though Namath straddled into the 70s, his important task was done in the 60s)

1970s: Terry Bradshaw, Bob Griese, Roger Staubach, Fran Tarkenton

1980s: Dan Fouts, Dan Marino, Joe Montana (though Marino played much of the 90s, his SB appearances were in the 80s)

    80s/90s straddler: John Elway

1990s: Troy Aikman, Jim Kelly, Warren Moon, Steve Young

So? What does the future hold? I expect Brett Favre to become a 90s/00s straddler HOFer

What 5 QBs from the 00s will get in? Brady and Manning, sure. Who else? Warner?

What will the future project? What five from the 2010s decade will make it?

Kinda looks more like 4 is the standard...

For the 00's it's more like Brady and Mannings. Also can add Big Ben to that bunch.

      For the 10's:

      - Rodgers has to be a lock already... unless he's caught betting on NFL games while coked up in a Cali-king bed full of trannie hookers...

      - Brees (00's/10's straddler) is very likely in.

      LOL...

Not a Warner fan, but based on resume plus his ambassador status I could see him making it.

These are all some good names. As I see it, in the history of football there are now only 3 QBs that are sure fire first ballot HOFers:

Peyton Manning, Brett Favre, Tom Brady.

Other retired QBs that is probable: Kurt Warner

One recent "retiree" that is a longshot possibility: Steve McNair (could get some sympathy votes)

Other active QBs that still can add to their resume that will get serious consideration:

Drew Brees, Ben Roethlisberger, Eli Manning, Aaron Rodgers, Donovan McNabb.

And, of course, who knows what certain young guns may accomplish in the future, like the Sam Bradfords, Cam Newtons, Matt Ryans, even Joe Flacco.

Beyond that the Senior Committe of the HOF could put up the following names for consideration (remember, QB Benny Friedman who played in the 1920s-30s was elected in the 2000s):

Jim Hart, Ken Anderson, John Hadl, Ken Stabler, Jack Kemp, Earl Morral, Bert Jones, Jim McMahon, Archie Manning

Under whatever circumstances, I still think that only about 5 QBs per decade will be inducted.

And it would be nice after 50 years for the Browns to get a hold of one of those 5 for future consideration.

I think the way the NFL is changing the standards for Hall of Fame consideration will increase, it just depends if we see a class of QB's get in before it does.

Matt Stafford for example had one of the greatest statistical seasons ever last year and I don't think anyone considers him a top 5 QB. If it keeps up like this and the NFL continues to structure the rules to make the league resemble arena football - in ten or so years we will see average QB's putting up HOF stats.

Sure, the numbers get skewed. I was at my Kiwanis Club this morning and a member gave a "Stock Market" report and touted that the Dow Jones Industrial Avg. had gone over the 13,000 mark. I mentioned to the person that I remembered the day when Ronald Reagan came on TV bragging about the fact that the Dow had gone over the "magical 1000 mark" (maybe some of you remember that). So 13,000 now is like 1000 back in the 80s?

The same is true for passer numbers.

In 1980 I recall that when Brian Sipe threw for over 4000 yards he became only the third person in 60 years of NFL history to do so behind Joe Namath in 1967 and Dan Fouts the previous year of 1979.

Now, a 4000 yards are commonplace. How many QBs got 4K yards in 2011? Eleven different QBs. In 2011 you were a POS QB if you didn't get 4000 yards.

So, obviously for future HOF consideration the numbers these guys are putting up will have to be reevaluated.

But, as Zombo has pointed out, still the most important factor in HOF consideration for a QB, I assume, will be winning.

And I guess that is why the likes of Vinny Testaverde and Drew Bledsoe, despite being in the Top 10 of most QB statistical categories will probably not get a sniff of HOF consideration

Eli and Ben could make it because you can't deny either if they win a third SB. I'd like to think Ben is done ... and he's not very well liked, so I think he HAS to win three.

Brees makes it with another SB or another 5 years at this production level.

Aaron Rogers is filling out a nice resume.

Typical Zombo, of course Ben won't make it because he isn't well liked due to sexual assault allegations. It might actually have hurt him if he were CHARGED.

Mark Twain said a lie can travel halfway across the world before a truth can get it's shoelaces tied.

A few years ago, the LA Time processed an article about 70% of trading on the market due to High Frequency Trading. The story was repeating by Bloomberg and NY Times -- for those not in the know, Bloomberg is the #1 Financial Reporting organization in the world. When asked about the source, each organization referred to the other. After the story broke, the first day a Google Search revealed 700,000 searches. The next day, it was over 3 million. Eventually the original source was a college student repeating a supposition made by a professor in GA and posted on Twitter, with a follower being a family member of the student working for LA Times.

To anyone who took the time to research anything about the sexual assault allegations, 1st they would realize why there were no charges filed. The actual story was flimsy at best. Roethlisberger was a cocky jerk, but the girl's story changed so often she could have been nicknamed revolving door. Between her and her friends following Ben and his group with their DTF badges, and the eyewitness tesitmony that they were making out in public the entire time -- sorry the 7 years of bouncing experience in me saw me catching many couples in back rooms together. Alcohol makes people do dumb things -- but the girls friends (the ones who made the allegations, took her to a cop where he asked her if she was raped, she answered no, then they took her to a hospital to be examined and it showed no evidence of rape. The police report and videos were all made public. As for the other girl, her blatant statements and emails on company computers made her move obviously nothing short of a money grab. Was Ben a jerk, absolutely. I met the guy, he was as arrogant as it got. And I have no doubt he acted like a 29 year old drunk guy would -- but don't think these girls are innocent little victims. I've seen far worse from women in term of manipulation than you could imagine.

Besides, Mark Sanchez was accused of the same thing at USC, a Packers and Colts player was accused of Sexual Assault the same off-season and it got miniscule media attention. Another player went to trial lately for sexual assault and it got relatively no attention.

Do you think Ray Lewis being charged for murder will hurt his eligibility?

If Ben keeps his act clean, time will make it all forgotten, just like Kobe Bryant, who also was CHARGED.

NFL records include a rookie record of 13-0 that will never be broken. Most games with 80% completion % in a season. 3 perfect passer rating games. 2nd fewest attempts to reach 25,000 yards. 4th fewest starts to reach 80 wins. The 11th highest QB rating All Time (Eli is 41st)

The 2/3 Super Bowls isn't going to hurt either. Forget the lowest passer rating to win a Super Bowl, he still had a 100+ rating throughout and he was the youngest to win it, plus an 84 rating career wise. Considering Tarkenton attained it 0/3 and Kelly did it 0/4. Ben doesn't need to win another one, just maintain his level of play for 4 more years. He'll likely come close to 50,000 yards passing.

But, given your % rate of success, you merely suggesting he won't is as strong a lock as there ever will be.

It won't hurt his eligibility because to be eligible one only has to have been retired for 5 years.

I think you mean "electability".....and I believe the answer is: YES.

It would not surprise me if Lewis is not inducted in his first year of eligibility because of it. I think he will obviously get in, but the HOF does tend to sometimes give a protest vote at times and deny first time status to someone who would seem to be a clear choice.

A key thing I noted from this: Jim Hart went undrafted. That was when they had 20 rounds. Of course, in those 20 rounds at the time the NFL drafted 280 players (and the AFL had their own separate draft). Today the NFL drafte about 250 some players.

But, here was a near Hall of Famer that went undrafted.

Like Warren Moon, and Kurt Warner no one thought he was worth a pick. (Moon due to race more than anything else).

Other undrafted HOFers: Joe Perry, Emlen Tunnell, Jack Butler, Dick Night Train Lane, Willie Wood, Emmitt Thomas, Larry Little, John Randle.
