What a scoop:
"But there’s nothing new about the clip or Obama’s role in the controversy at Harvard Law School. In 2008, as a part of our quadrennial election special The Choice 2008, FRONTLINE ran the same footage of the speech as a part of an exploration of Obama’s time at Harvard Law School, where he graduated in 1991. It’s been online at our site and on YouTube since then.
…
FRONTLINE producers obtained the footage from the same source as BuzzFeed did this week: the archives of WGBH, Boston’s PBS station. The footage was shot in 1990 by a team of local news producers for the WGBH Ten O’Clock News. FRONTLINE is produced at WGBH and our producers were alerted to the footage in the station archives in 2008."

What about him?

Trent Lott?

What about him?
What about him?
Forced out of office for appearing to embrace an elderly racist?
But it's cool if Obama does it.
But we already know that, correct, it's not a scoop.
We know the president has sidled up to some unsavory characters over the years in order to get a firmar grip on his base.
And sure lots of us were more radical when we were young and idealistic.
Were you on board for the Lott lynch mob?

Obama Assigned Reading: Bell Says Whites Might Enslave Blacks
Back when Barack Obama was a lecturer at the University of Chicago Law School, he assigned Derrick Bells readings in class. In particular, he assigned the introduction to Bells book, Faces at the Bottom of the Well. Bells book was highly controversial, and for good reason: it contains some of the most inflammatory racial material in the critical race theory canon. And the introduction is chock-full of it. Open your hearts and minds to the words of Derrick Bell:
Slavery is, as an example of what white America has done, a constant reminder of what white America might do.
Or this:
Black people will never gain full equality in this country. Even those herculean efforts we hail as successful will produce no more than temporary peaks of progress, short-lived victories that slide into irrelevance as racial patterns adapt in ways that maintain white dominance. This is a hard-to-accept fact that all history verifies.
Or this:
In similar fashion, African Americans must confront must confront and conquer the otherwise deadening reality of our permanent subordinate status.
Why would Barack Obama assign this inflammatory racial nonsense to his students? Will anyone in the mainstream media ask him about it? Will anyone in the White House press corps ask Obama about his association with Derrick Bell? Dont count on it.
H/T Aaron Klein.

Let's not overstate things here. He wasn't forced out of office, and it wasn't by "a lynch mob." Funny choice of words when we're talking about a guy who was pining for the days of actual lynch mobs.
Lott was a former segregationist saying that he wishes the segregationist had won the presidency back in the day because then we "wouldn't have had all of these problems." He only lost his position as Senate Majority Leader, and was pushed out not only by Democrats, but by members of his own party who didn't want that to be the face of the Republican Party in the Senate.
The fact that this caused a problem is hardly a surprise.
Did I think that was appropriate, to lose his Majority Leader status and get Whip status instead? Sure. He went from the #1 Republican to the Senate to the #2. Probably about right. And then he served an additional five years before resigning to become a lobbyist and make money. So he wasn't "forced out of office." He was sanctioned.

So any reading you assign to your class, u automatically believe?

Derrick Bell. The latest crazy black man.
Yes, they're really going to do this again.
-
Well, without wasting a lot of time on pots and kettles, I guess I'm not surprised.

It's hardly the gravest sin in political history, but for a party that was trying to shake its image as a Southern cracker party - and still is - he probably deserved to be replaced.
He was called out by Bush, if you remember.
-
What's the analogous situation on the left that I'm missing? I bet something is coming that's not really analogous, but you think it is, and then we'll spend 10 posts parsing a distinction that seems apparent to me and not to you.

“Our President is one who is trying to divide our country. He is not in this to unify America and to solidify our place as the exceptional nation in the world. He is trying to divide us based along lines of gender, of religion, of income, even of race. Look at his embracing of Derrick Bell, the radical college racist professor who he, you showed in a video last night, embraced literally and figuratively, asking others to open their hearts and minds to the radical agenda of a racist like Derrick Bell who believed that white men oppress blacks and minorities. And Barack Obama, evidently at least at the time, believed what Derrick Bell believed.” - Sarah Palin
The mind reels.

And again, I wonder why do you think I'll freak out and change my mind because of something george w bush said or did?

No, because you're talking about the "lynch mob" on the left pushing him out. I'm pointing out that he was eventually pushed out by his own party. They're the ones who stripped him of his post. Lott wasn't too pleased with the White House, if you recall.

That quote has to be fake. No way Palin knows some of those words

This was back when Rove was trying to make inroads with black voters. They tend to not like leaders who pine for segregation, and view "all of those problems" a little differently than Trent Lott does.

Yes, because if there's anyone who has their finger on the pulse of the black community, it's you, Steve.
I'm glad the weekend is here.
