If We Paid Jake $30 Million....
-
H & H thought it was a good move to overpay Jake Delhomme to come Cleveland and throw interceptions, but won't pick up the phone and have a conversation w/ Peyton Manning? That's insane! This guy was the MVP of the league last year and he didn't even take a snap. Indy is a train wreck 2-14 team w/o Manning and any team he goes to is a strong candidate to go deep in the playoffs. But the Browns don't pick up the phone because we have so many other great QB's on this team.

Where exactly are you pulling that 30 million dollar figure from?

Payton had signed a 5 year $90 million contract extension July 2011. He will want similar money in a new deal. Probably $50 million for 3 years with half guaranteed.
-
CLE didn't pay Delhomme anywhere close to 30M or 28M. The contract Delhomme signed with CLE was report to have him make $7 million in the 2010 season, including just under $900,000 in base salary. He was schedule to make 5.4M last year before CLE cut him.

They don't go after high payed FA players because they would rather save the cap room to sign draft picks than to sign up just one or two guys. We signed Delhomme for something like 7 million a year, while Manning is going to go for at least 25 million a year. You don't spend that money on a 35 year old QB coming off of neck surgery unless you have an insane amount of cap room or your incredibly desperate.

A desperate team with a lot of cap room? Sure sounds like the Browns. I'd love to have him even if it is for 2 or 3 years but there is no possible way he would ever want to come here. Between the weather, lack of a dome, lack of talent, lack of coaching, lack of continuity, and lack of success, Cleveland isn't very appeasing. It doesn't come down to us wanting him, its him not wanting us. With that said I doubt he's going to be asking for an insane amount of money. The dude has more money then he knows what to do with. At this point he just wants to win. The more money he ask for, the less money whichever team signs him has to bring in more talent to help him win.

First, no team in the NFL is going to even offer him a contract until their team doctors go over all his medical records and do a thorough exam (think just maybe the Colts did), and decided it wasn't worth the risk? Secondly, they're going to want to see him throw too- to make sure he still has the same velocity on his passes.
Yeah, here's how that conversation with Manning will go. "Hi Peyton, Tom Heckert with the Cleveland Browns." " Sorry Tom, I looked at a couple of your game tapes and saw Colt running for his life way too many times- not my cup of tea. Click."
It wouldn't even matter if H&H offered Manning a stupid amount of money- because as Favre with the Vikings- it's about the chance of winning another Super Bowl before he retires.
It's teams that think they're a qb away who are going to make "the push for Peyton." If you think that's the Browns, please get real.

I think it does come down to the Browns not wanting him. The Browns are no doubt looking to solve their QB requirement for the long term, not the short term, and Peyton is obviously a short team solution for a team that has a lot of pieces in place, save the QB. That is not the Browns....and the Browns recognize that....and Manning recognizes that, so, other than courtesy, there is no reasons for these two parties to converse.

I still think the idea of flirting with Tannehill is more a probability than most think for the Browns.

It is a bit like asking a single guy why he doesnt try for Kate Perry since she is also single currently .....
