How Do You Feel About The Fa So Far?

The Browns Board

  • HB,

FWIW I thought you made a good post.

IMO FA's are best suited to either:

    - adding depth; or

    - adding that "final piece of the puzzle".

Teams that stick to this discipline are more successful in FA. It's the teams that have continually swung for the FA fences... cough Washington cough... that are FA failures.

I think we have done, and are doing, the former fairly effectively. We are a good ways from the latter.

Buffalo is trying to do the latter for their D with Mario. Peyton is going to choose a team where he is that last offensive piece.

  • Four out of the six teams that have signed the most free agents were non relevant teams that are now relevant.

How is that only pointing out things that support my side, it's a pretty shocking fact when the new cliche for every freak is build through the draft.

Sure Green Bay is relevant and only signed 3 free agents in this time, let's release a Hall of Famer QB and have another HoF we drafted waiting to take his place then we can talk.

The last time the Browns have put anything on the field to be excited about was when? In 07 when we did what?

Signed Jamal Lewis,Steinbach,Derek Anderson,Jurevicius 06 and so on.

So if you are compliant with this fuckin ten year plan Holmgren has in store for us I hope you're excited about the shit that will most likely be put out on the field in the next few years because it's not looking too promising.

And oh yeah for this shit to work Heckert is going to need to hit on pretty much every pick, and sorry but Heckert hasn't done THAT great so far. Question marks are still out on a lot of these guys. TJ Ward for one.

And I'm not saying go Redskins or Philly and try to fix it in one year but what the fuck?

Go after guys like Eric Winston,Ben Grubbs,Carl Nicks,Jabari Evans,Robert Meachem...

How do they not inquire about at least one fucking receiver or o-lineman with a free agency loaded with talent after the garbage we had last year is ludicrous.

  • I, too, am very disappointed. Last year, I condemned H&H for fielding a team that didn't have quality starers at the receiver position. For the most part, the rest of the team's starters were possibly NFL caliber - but one weakness, WR, (coupled with Colt's inaccurate/weak arm) set the whole series of events in motion and resulted in a disasterous season. This year, we know we need an upgrade at QB, and we're still weak at receiver, now running back, and OL (at least two OL positions?). And we could stand some improvement at DB and saftey. It's too many positions to cover through the draft. Even if you do, 5 to 7 rookie starters?

So what H&H are telling us, is that for the second year in a row, they'll put out a team that will win 2 to 4 games. Whether they do or not is not the point, it's the strategy that is unacceptable! It's like they're not even trying to field a winning team. Browns, please hire me! I know very little about football but I guarantee that I wouldn't lose Hillis with some BS story about the CIA. Did anyone really think he was going to sign after that attempt at slander? And I wouldn't go after the big names, but I would sign another 4 players to start filling some holes. Short contracts are fine. We know we want to build through the draft. But some solid plug-ins could give us something to get excited about. This show is way too conservative for this league.

And they had better select Blackmon. Personally, I would select at least 5 offence players in the draft. Our D can hang in there for another season.

  • My expectations for FA was to bring in depth and role players at need positions and draft the "stars". The Browns are set up nicely to do just that.

Those that look at the 1st week of FA and make judgements about how the team will perform the following year have no clue how the NFL off-season works.

As teams sign big name FAs, cap casualties usually follow, leaving above average players looking for a place to play. The draft typically wreaks havoc on the veterns too.

I'd look for a couple more moves in FA (still depth players), a big time draft, then a couple more signings/releases. The truth is we have no idea who those players might be.

The off-season is still young. Step away from the ledge.

I would step away from the ledge, but the Browns have a pretty poor track record of doing what you are suggesting. I believe we may have picked up two players that way in the last two years.

You are damn right they are relevant,Arizona went to a Superbowl and New Orleans won one. Detroit and Houston are both up an coming teams. It's a hell of a lot more exciting being a fan of these teams than the Browns.

You even trying to argue that shows you have the mind of a spoiled little child.

And I would expect a reply to my comments about the 07 Browns from a troll like yourself.

In fact I pondered posting it as soon as I mentioned the 07 Browns because I knew an idiot would come back with that response. I'll take take 10-6 over 5-11,5-11,4-12, signing free agents had nothing to with the Browns debacle.

    You are a simpleton.

Now, be gone troll.. go scour the board looking for more threads to post your worthless snide remarks.

Relevance: 4 of 6 in what time period? I took you to mean this off-season and that would make your relevance comment speculative.

'07: Yup... very exciting. Also very followed by '08. And, yes, the breaking down of the exciting '07 FA signings you are championing had a great deal to do with the '08 debacle.

Picks: Of course Heckert needs to hit on as many picks as possible... that's true of all teams. But the fact is that no one hits on them all.

Inquiring: You are assuming we did not inquire. My guess is that there were a few very short phone calls to agents that went something like...

"Hello (Agent's Name). Tom Heckert here. Love to talk to you about (Player's Name)... Oh, he's not interested in Cleveland? Sorry to hear that. Maybe next time."

    Not exactly something to publicize.

  • Thought we would do more for our depth. I don't expect anyone we draft after Round 5 to be rotational contributors (Hagg was an exception last year).

We need a RT, RB and #1 WR I'm assuming we are getting these guys with the first three picks. We have to! After that we have a 3, 4, 4, 5 and needs at almost every position. Not good enough for me- we are an injury or two away even with a great draft of being a top contender (AGAIN) for a Top 5 pick next year. Let's say we would have signed a guy like Meachem and Winston we could use some of those top picks to pick the best guy at any position- we don't have that luxury.

Thank you for that. I started to think about replying to those posts above, but you said everything I was thinking. I completely agree. First of all we dont know how much Heckert pursued people because that is not regularly published information. Secondly, if you were a free agent, would you want to come to Cleveland, to a rebuilding team with uncertainty at the QB position? Third, I dont want to tie up a bunch of money on players that when we are ready to actually make a run for the playoffs in a couple of years, are going to be old and declining, Id rather make the correct FA decisions when we are close to being a playoff caliber team.

The only complaint I have is that I would love to bring in a couple more adequate, veteran free agents on the short and cheap to fill some holes so we can focus on drafting the best player available. Im thinking a OG, RT, OLB and maybe a CB or safety. And this is still the beginning of free agency, there are still people available.

That's referring to page 2 where I wrote this.

Four of the top six most active teams in free agency since 2006 were battered franchises who turned their fortunes around. Detroit,New Orleans,Houston,Arizona - granted the draft was very important as well but this is more than enough to debunk the cliche saying that every good team builds through the draft alone.

If anything it's evidence that a struggling franchise needs to be very active in free agency to turn things around.

here...let me teach you a lesson son.

you thought that PD article was some kind of golden nugget that would support your claim that FA is good for building a team. the very next post challeneged you and pointed out how cherry picking data can lead to any results you want.

but in doing so, you ignore the lesson that the full data sample suggests.....building thru the draft achieves more consistent and longer lasting results. when this suggestion was made, your cry-hole puckered up and instead of continuing the discussion, you slink away under the guise of "im right and youre wrong".

Here's your answer- except for a very few around here- no one was saying go after Peyton Manning (who wouldn't have come here) or Mario Williams. But not paying Hillis say $2.5 million- hometown discount. Or not even bothering trying to make a serious push at Winston- who would have instantly filled a the most glaring hole on o-line at not break the bank money- isn't sitting on your hands doing nothing. Buffalo and KC are THAT much better destinations than Cleveland? Really? So now we have two holes we're going to have to address in the draft- instead of using those picks elsewhere. Hey Heckert- you're going to find a RT in the third or fourth round who's better right now than Winston? I doubt it.

How do they not inquire about at least one fucking receiver or o-lineman with a free agency loaded with talent after the garbage we had last year is ludicrous.

  • original thoughts? you trumpeted a fucking PD article....thats original?

your point was that what...4 teams have used FA successfully? how does that validate your point when its easy to show double or triple the number of teams in the same time period that failed miserably?

the redskins tried to build almost entirely though FA.....and failed again and again and again. an already solid philly team got worse by meddling in FA last year....

no one is saying to avoid FA.....which you seem to be arguing with yourself about then. FA is best used to supplement your team, as is displayed by the teams that use this philosophy over a decade or more while continuing to challenge and go to the playoffs. 2 of them are in our division.

what most of us are saying is that spending big money doesn't always yield big returns. while you weren't here, everyone was drooling over ray edwards last year...although not quite as bad as mario this year. doesn't look like such a bad "no-sign" now tho....

MY point, is that i'd rather take an extra year or 2 to possibly have a sustained winner rather than another '07. while '07 was nice, it did little to quench our hunger for a winner. sustained success is what will turn this fanbase around, and compromising the cap in order to win now only hurts our chances to win in the future.

    big picture....

  • We're not building through FA. Can your pussyflapping, BadNews.

I doubt it.

again...how do you know we didn't? you're assuming it, then getting irritated about it. wanna see a quick breakdown of that logic?

FA goes to other team = the browns didn't do a damn thing to try and attain his rights.

thats quite a jump hoorta....it seems everyone gets all crampy when the browns dont get that one guy that each fan really wants, and this leads to all kinds of...well...conspiracies.

i hate this FO more than just about all of you....i was one of the few that dared say hiring holmgren was a mistake. but jesus christ.....quit falling in love with a player, or convincing yourselves that A and B absolutely need to happen or this team will suck. im giving these FO jackasses way more credit than the koolaide drinkers here.....so what gives?

i dont get it. its a self-perpetuating prophecy. i cant blame anyone for not wanting to come to cleveland to deal with these fickle-ass fans. we boo our best players demise, throw tantrums for every move or lack of, expect a winner after 1 season and cry for change after 2.

seriously...i think everyone needs to take some time off. way too much emotional investment in a frickin game.

UNBELEIVABLE letting hillis walk for a 3 MILLION DOLLAR ONE FUCKIN YEAR DEAL omg i want to smash somethin cute just typing that nonsense.

Hillis is done he is slow and he sucks.........................good move..............and he is not a team player and will be out of the league in 2+ years

Except, of course, he is better than anything we had...or are likely to get without using our most prime resource: our high draft picks...that are severely needed to be utilized at other positions.

Now it is clear to me that the Browns must use either their #4 on Richardson or their later pick on Lamar Miller.

But by doing that, we cannot now use that pick on a WR, DB, LB or anywhere else we had serious needs. And its not like they have picked up a quality FA RB to replace him

  • I find it so aggravating that as usual The Browns don't even try to get better. They are more then happy to sit at the bottom. We could find some help...you see loads of great players just go to other teams and we sit here with players on our team that other teams would never consider....Why god Why?
