King:Mangini will be Browns coach soon
-
I am still firmly uninspired by Lerner's fascination with Mangini. If I knew Mangini was going to be the leading candidate, I would have kept Crennel for another year to see what as there next year. But I'm more and more disappointed as each day rolls by. When Lerner promptly blew up the team, many of us felt he had something major cooking up his sleeve, like Cowher, Marty, Pioli, etc. But to see him blow up the team for Mangini? I'm sure he'll be a decent coach, but I have no confidence that he'll make us a legitimate contender year in and year out.

And you could look at it negatively this way too if you want.We went from having a "coffee fetcher" of Ozzie Newsomes as GM and a "coffee fetcher" of Bill B, as head coach.....
and we changed to...wait for it...
a "coffee fetcher" of Ozzie Newsomes as GM and a "coffee fetcher" of Bill B, as head coach
Huge change of philosophy eh?
Funny stuff...but here is the REAL change in philosophy.
1. Coach WITH experience
2. GM who not only knows the coach, but is friends with him (not like Savage trying to get RAC fired) and will work WITH him
3. FO with a CLEAR chain of command (not like PS not able to fire RAC...so has to undermine him)
I also don't see Kokinis getting the VP title as well...so we are likely to have a VP over the entire thing (McKay?). That gives us the CORRECT style of FO.
Personally, I don't think it is so much we are passing on Pioli in favor of Mangini...I think we are passing on Pioli because Lerner wants the FO built in the correct way instead of having an all powerful Pioli (who is untested in the role) in charge.
I, for one, am in complete agreement with how things are going. A coach and the personnel guy should be on the same page and get along as much as possible. Then hire in a VP that can be the bad guy when necessary.

By the way, Chris Mortensen's sources are telling him that the rumors of Pioli making "extreme demands" are false:
"Talks [with Pioli] never even progressed to that stage so that's misleading and somebody else's agenda," the source said. "[Pioli] has been an absolute professional in the process. This isn't about Pioli. His credentials speak volumes but [Lerner] is focused on the coach and Mangini has made a terrific impression. We'll know pretty soon [on the direction]."
And I can understand the concerns about a GM having too much authority, but I don't understand how the ass backwards Mangini-Kokinis team is any better. (EDIT: By "ass backwards," I mean the odd situation in which Mangini gets to recommend a GM whose personnel authority doesn't seem to eclipse the HC's)
Unless a VP is brought in to be boss over both of them (I'd prefer Accorsi to McKay), I don't see this system being any more stable.
And if getting along solves all, a Pioli-Ferentz combo would be much more appealing to me.
-
I honestly don't know who would be the best HC and GM for this team, I just hope that Lerner and whoever may be involved are able to pick two guys that can move this team forward instead of backward.
-
Mangini for HC could be bad news for BQ Nation since the Mangenius just got run out of town for having another QB shoved down his throat by fans and ownership.
DA's odds for starting in CLE next season will shoot up if this happens.

Hadn't seen that about Pioli...so that is good news. As for Mangini/Kokinis thing...that is a guy he is "recommending"...not hiring. I don't see a conflict there. I have often made recommendations for people 'above' me for positions. It goes a long way for people to understand you are 'happy' to work for somebody. As long as the two are professional enough to abide by the chain of command...and Kokinis is man enough to understand this is JUST a recommendation (and not Mangini hiring him)...it shouldn't be a problem. However, if Kokinis is mamby pamby and can't BE Mangini's BOSS...that is another story.
So, really we are looking at this:
GM/VP - Pioli
HC - Ferentz
vs
VP - ?
GM - Kokinis (and likely McCreight involved)
HC - Mangini
I still like the separation of VP and GM better...and I think if the GM is getting the players the coach can use...then the COACH is more important to success.

If you're going to have a VP, why not have him hire the GM and HC? If not, you're risking falling into the same issues we had when Savage didn't hire RAC.

Dude, Anderson is gone. Focus on landing spots. Lerner is making Quinn the face of the team and there will be ZERO chance of another QB competition in Cleveland. None.In Vegas the odds for Anderson starting in Cleveland next year are 2.5 to 1.
Sorry shep despite your prayers the most likely spot for Anderson next year is Cleveland where he is under contract.
Unless Quinn's hand-picked coach is in town (McDaniels) this issue will remain undecided.

None.Between Quinn and Anderson, Anderson is the one more likely to drive someone like Mangini crazy in a Favre-esque fashion (picks). No way he'd put himself through that again. Or the fans. He's history.
I tend to like it. And the "ass backwards" of it emulates Belicheck "suggesting" his personnel guy, Pioli, for his second job after his stint in Cleveland. Just change the names.
Since lerner is les than open about what he has in mind we can only guess and listen to the buzz from different sources..
I like the idea of a new president
A VP
A GM
A Coach
Overpowered VP/GMs are not the answer its about teamwork just like on the field...

According to Grossi, the Kokinis interview will have to wait until Sunday:

I'm not sure they (Pioli and McDaniels) were ever out of play.
I can't wait until this cat-and-mouse game of bullshit posturing is over.

Personally, I think Pioli was jacking us around. Even before his KC interview he is saying maybe he just might stay in NE. I have to think maybe he never intended to leave unless someone kissed his ass.
Could be wrong and Pioli/McDaniel jump back into the picture.
Bottom line is some will bitch about Mangini/Kokinis, some would bitch about Pioli/McDaniel and some would bitch about Heckert/Spagnoula. As a matte of fact some would bitch about anybody that was brought in. So, I just hope whoever it is is a solid choice. Sometimes that choice that isn't the sexiest may be the best in the long run.
I have no problem with Mangini. As a matter of fact if he can survive 3 years with a GM that doesn't know squat about football, he may prosper here under Kokinis and McCreight.
