    ROUND ONE, Play-in games:

    GAME ONE:

1945 Cleveland Rams VS. 1998 Minnesota Vikings

If Cleveland couldn't get excited by the departing '45 Rams (<40k "packed" Old Muni to see the Champ game), why would I? '98 Vikings... and a 35 yd FG...

    GAME TWO:

    1942 Bears VS. 1955 Browns

Luckman v Graham... Graham had the better supporting cast, Ray the Rabbit, Dante and the Dubber... '55 Browns

    GAME THREE:

    1998 Broncos VS. 1934 Bears

Can't vote for a team that was beaten by Converse All-Stars so '98 Broncos... solid Offense and a hard hitting D.

    GAME FOUR:

    2007 Patriots VS. 1940 Bears

Easiest of all... '07 Pats as I'm pretty sure Bill B. could handle the "T formation"

In case I miss any of their rounds, please consider this my Absentee Ballot(s) for the greatest team of all time, the '85 Bears.

Like a tournament, that team will have to fight through at least 4 other foes. You should get your chance to vote.

  • OK, I am going to be running this Greatest Team in History Bracketology runoff.

I have identified what I think are perhaps the 20 greatest teams in history and put them all in a bracket and have a vote off. I will start with Eight of these teams in a "Play-in round" pitching the lower seeded teams. That will boil it down to 16, which will then be pitted in a 16 team bracket.

Please vote. I will keep each round open for several days.

    ROUND ONE, Play-in games:

    GAME ONE:

1945 Cleveland Rams, 9-1, won NFL title with Bob Waterfield at QB

    VS.

1998 Minnesota Vikings, 15-1, lost NFC title game in OT to Falcons. Chris Carter/Randy Moss.

    Your vote:

    GAME TWO:

1942 Bears, went 11-0 but lost NFL title game

    VS.

1955 Browns, went 9-2-1, won NFL title game 38-14 over Rams. Otto Graham's last title.

    Your vote:

    GAME THREE:

1998 Broncos, 14-2, won SB 33. John Elway's final year.

    VS.

1934 Bears, went 13-0 but lost NFL title game to the Redskins

    Your vote:

    GAME FOUR:

2007 Patriots, went 16-0 but lost Super Bowl to Giants, led by Tom Brady

    VS.

1940 Bears, went 8-3 but defeated Redskins 73-0 in NFL title game.

    Your vote:

When enough votes are in I will close this then move onto the 16 team bracket. (so if you see that I have left off what you think is a great team, it will probably be included in the next round. This round is for like the 8 vs. 9 seeded teams)

    Thanks for your participation.

Your vote will not count now. Not until or unless they are matched up against an opponent and they go through the levels.

  • 45 Cleveland Rams

    55 Browns

    98 Broncos

    07 Patriots

  • My own votes:

Game One: 1945 Rams over 1998 Vikings. Vikings disappointed

Game 2: 1955 Browns over 1942 Bears. '55 Browns may have been second best team of Browns dynasty

Game 3: 1998 Broncos over 1934 Bears. Elway won title, Bears didn't

Game 4: 1940 Bears over 2007 Pats. Pats 16-0 was impressive, losing the SB wasn't. 8-3 Bears record in '40 wasn't overly impressive, but, 73-0 win in the title game was overwhelmingly impressive.

  • Are the 2011 Browns in this tournament? I think they have a chance.

With comments like this sometimes it is no wonder that others sometimes think Browns fans can be ignorant.

The 1985 Bears being considered the greatest team ever is the most media hyped BS ever. There are essentially 4 types of Super Bowl teams - the loser, the team that only wins one, the team that wins one and reaches another and the multiple time champions.

From 1970 to 1999, every single Super Bowl Champion had, at minimum, reached another Super Bowl within a 4 year period with 2 exceptions.

1994 49ers - were 5 years removed from their back to back 1988-1989 Championships and played in 3 NFC Championship Games, losing to eventual champions Giants and Cowboys (2x).

1985 Bears - who won only 1 other playoff game in the combined 4 years preceeding and post their 1985 season. The 1985 Bears played arguably the weakest team to ever reach a Super Bowl - if not for the Patriots upset of the Dolphins, the spread offense of the Dolphins was a nightmare match-up for the 46, which is why teams don't use it anymore period.

And before anyone starts rambling on about Jim McMahon being hurt, its not like his performance was elite anyway - even for the era. Both the 87 Redskins and 90 Giants won the Super Bowl with back up QBs. The Bears were over rated, had a scheme that was difficult to match up to at first but then figured out, and were arrogant and cocky for their own good.

Considering the teams that managed to repeat as champions - its an insult to even mention the 1985 Bears next to any of them.

Of course my vote is for the Akron Pros - you know - one of Cleveland's 13 Championships according to Gipper. I called a local radio talk show here in Florida about that - they about laughed that notion off the show as an embarrassment.

Hello, McFly, is anybody home? This if Fucking Round One. This is the playoff round of like 8-9 seeds. We will get to the other teams in the next round and you can vote for whomever you want to then.

Jesus, it is a wonder some of you idjits made it through fucking high school. You can't seem to follow a simple set of instructions.

I suppose that when you did your NCAA brackets you just skipped the first 5 rounds and went to the Championship game? How stupid did you look then when you submitted your bracket.

As for the dickwad radio guys in Florida, I am sure that we don't need to go to Florida to find young, ignorant sports talk show hosts. We have our share of them right here.

(besides, the term is Greater Cleveland, Norteast Ohio....those dumbasses from Florida probably couldn't find Akron and Cleveland on a map. Next time ask them if they simply know who won the NFL title in 1920.

....and if you are not too stupid (and I have no confidence in you that you aren't), you will get the opportunity in the next round to vote for, or against, not the Akron Pros, but the Canton Bulldogs.

  • Need more votes. I will probably end this round by the end of today.

  • OK, then. The Winners of the Play in Round are:

    1945 Rams defeat 1998 Vikings

    1955 Browns defeat 1942 Bears

    1998 Broncos defeat 1934 Bears

    2007 Patriots defeat 1940 Bears

Don't cry for me Chicago, the Bears still have a big part to play in this.

Wow...sorry to jump on this thread late, but I disagree. The Bears defense was amazing that season. If they were so easy to figure out, why did they go 15-1? They destroyed their playoff opponents as well.

Yes, it was only one season of dominance, but remember, the NFC was pretty loaded back then.I put the Bears 1985 season at the top of the list, even better than the '72 Dolphins, since I became an NFL fan in 1970.

  • 1' NO question the Super Steelers of the 70's were the greatest teams ever

Not sure about the best of the bunch, but my "favorite" was the 1950 Browns.

They proved that their team, and the AAFC, was on par with the NFL when they smoked the defending champion Eagles on opening Sunday and then beat the Rams for the championship.

They were like a Light Heavyweight that had beaten everyone in that weight class, and then moved up to Heavyweight and beat all of those contenders too, including the tomato cans like Rich's Steelers.

No team has a story, or an era, or a dynasty like the Browns of 1946-1955 ... the Greatest Football Team of All-Time.
