Outsider's Take On Weeden

The Browns Board

  • So I'm a lifelong Dolphins fan and I had put some time into evaluating the QBs in this draft. You guys got a good one in Weeden. It really couldn't have gone better for you guys. Richardson is a slam dunk at RB and for the life of me I don't know how Weeden went so far under the radar.

Well, I should say I don't agree with the age argument against him. Think about it logically: if he sucks then it never mattered how old he was. If he works out you still get 8 years out of the guy. You won't find anyone who doesn't like Weeden with an argument about his game. It's always the low hanging fruit age issue, which is short sighted and amateur. You're talking about a guy who can throw it with the best of them. You're talking about a guy who was asked to do more than pretty much any college QB pre-snap save for Luck. You're talking about a guy who has some serious talent. Trust me, no one is going to give a crap about his age when he's out there gunning it all over the field.

Anyway, I was hoping he'd be a Dolphin. I'll be rooting for him to succeed.

Hell yes, I'm rooting for him to succeed. Hell yes, he can throw nice passes. Can he read NFL defenses right out of the gate? That's the #22 pick question.

  • He sure does have a "cannon-arm" but I hope that our receivers are prepared to catch those bullets!

I hope we keep McCoy as a backup...

  • I saw someone say that he "needs to get better against the blitz." Are you kidding me? That's the laziest scouting I have ever seen. His ability to get the offense out of bad situations against the blitz pre-snap was incredible. Sometimes I wonder what people are watching. I think people just like typing words just to see them written.

The guys picked ahead of him at #1 and #2 are going to have the same issues. It's isn't realistic to think there won't be a learning curve.

The point is we aren't going to win the SB this year, so this is his learning year....and he is better than a seasoned McCoy right out of the gate, so we are going to win more games with Weeden at the helm.

I firmly believe Weeden makes our existing receivers better, so while we still need to look for help at receiver, I don't think the need is as great as perceived. Picking Weeden improved 2 positions on the field.

It is obvious that this regime does not see mccoy as the guy but this whole masquerade of weeden or any QB making our shitty WRs better is a joke..

Our WRs lack desperately needed take off speed and our Oline lacks the strength to block anything so the end result will be the same for either QB on passing downs and that result is scrambling for their lives looking for an open target that does not exist, the only real question to me is can the 28 year old weeden pick himself up off the ground play after play because tuffness is what it currently takes to QB this titantic mess.....

Richardson if he is going to be any help better magically be able to blow his own holes open because the current oline damn well cant...

Not feeling good about round 1 or the approaching season at all...

  • oh, the old "no QB will make a difference because the entire rest of the offense sucks" argument.

every think that the quality of the general has any affect on the morale of the troops? shit flows down hill....and colts on top of the mountain.

The idea of a learning curve makes total sense for a player that is 21-23. When Weeden is 30 (Next Season) that learning curve will give way to a bell curve for players that are 30+.

Just don't do to him what the Texans did to David Carr...

  • From a Steeler's fans perspective, drafting Weeden #22 was brilliant. It ensured we landed DeCastro, the best Guard in this years draft at a position of need for us. Had you selected Rielly, Detriot may have taken DeCastro. Then again, we still had Hightower on the board to select. Did I mention, Weeden's biggest weakness is against the zone blitz? Guess we can still consider Cleveland as a speed bump for awhile.

Objectively, I know you Brownie's want to believe in your front office staff right now, but I think they really mucked up yesterday. You really didn't trade much away for Richardson, but I just didn't see the nescessity to move up one spot. I don't think Minnesota had anybody willing to trade or they could've commanded more from you. I also don't think your front office knew what to do if they didn't get Richardson (it would've been okay to take Blackmon).

Weeden was a serious over-reach at #22. He would've been there at #37 you know. Go down the list of teams that need QB's between #22 and #37 and tell me who threatened to take Weeden? My guess is your front office panicked when Tennessee took Kendall Wright, as that was your pick. So now, your front office, already showing signs of paranoia trading up one spot to get Richardson, lost their "next" guy and took their second round pick in the first round.

Now what? Why are you trying to unload Colt McCoy? He doesn't have a big salary. As I said previously, if you select a QB in the first round there's now an expectation that he begins the season as starter. Even worse than selecting Weeden with #22 you are rushing him into action just because he's a first rounder. Keep McCoy, develop Weeden.

Anyways, your front office looks like a deer caught in the headlights, who don't seem to have a plan if "their" guy is claimed by another team. But anyways, congrats on Richardson, he does look like a solid pick.

The Vikings GM has stated he fielded calls from multiple teams for the #3 pick, so your assumption is incorrect. Weeden may have been there at 37, may not have been, I think the issue here is if we stuck with McCoy we have no QB that can push the ball down the field. Weeden can do that, I think he is a solid, I do agree it might have been a little bit of a reach but QBs are usually picked higher than where they are ranked. Weedens play will determine how good or bad that pick is, I think even if he doesn't pan out he is an upgrade over McCoy.

Why bother to read a thread titled "Ousider's Take On Weeden" let alone waste your time replying to it?

I'd seen most of the classroom stuff, but not the full episode.

First observation, slow release. Has a bit of a pitcher's wind-up. Very obvious in the work out bit around the 14 minute mark. Don't like that at all...
