Camp Battles

The Browns Board

  • Looking at the current guys on our roster, I think these are the most intriguing battles we will be looking at in camp this offseason:

Weeden vs. McCoy – Starting QB

Pinkston vs. Lauvao vs. Miller – Starting Gs

Fujita vs. Maiava vs. Johnson vs. Acho – Starting SLB

Norwood vs. Mitchell vs. Cooper vs. Saffold – 2 possible WR spots

Hardesty vs. Obgonnaya – 3rd RB spot

Wade vs. Davis vs. Dockery – Battle for last 2 CB spots*

Marecic vs. Smelley – Starting FB and roster spot

Benjamin vs. Cribbs – Slot WR and KR/PR

Wallace vs. Lewis – 3rd QB spot

Paxson vs. Witt vs. Hughes – Battle for 2 backup DT spots

Acho vs. Maiava vs. Sweat – Battle for 2 backup LB spots

Young vs. Brown – Starting FS*

*I am assuming that they finally plan on moving Sheldon Brown to FS this year.

You mean the young guys, none of whom were picked higher than the 5th round? I wouldnt get my hopes up, I think youre being way too optimistic. Unless we pick someone up, I would say with 80% certainty that Brown will be at CB this year. We have no other options, maybe some good nickel and dime guys but unless one seriously has improved we have no 2nd starting CB other than Brown.

True. But, there may be some merit to why it's been discussed. The FO did nothing to upgrade Usama Young, who BTW played decent last year, but there is not much backing him up. They have Ventrone, Simms (an UDFA in 2011) and 2 UDFAs they are supposed to bring in this year. Experts have stated that he is at the point in his career where he should move to FS, and the coaches have to be looking at this as a possibility. I think it makes sense, but we'll see what the coaches decide.

I havent heard any "experts" say that, I've just heard media speculation. Just like Pinkston was supposed to move to RT. I wouldnt mind Brown moving in the future, but I seriously doubt it is going to happen now that we dont have any other options at the #2 CB

  • Lump all the WR's together and say that the only WR who's earned his spot is Little. MoMa isn't exactly world-class.

Can anyone give a breakdown of the number of slots expected per position out of the 53 man roster? Ie usually 4-5 WRs, 7-9 O lineman etc... I know this varies a lot, but I just have no clue how that usually breaks down

No real set per potition b/c it depends on who can play special teams. By the way it looks it may be like this:

    3 QB

    3 RB

    1 FB

    6 WR

    4 TE

    10 O-linemen

    8 D-linemen

    6 LBs

    5 CBS

    4 S

    1 K/P/LS

Yea thats very similar to what I counted up. I think the most interesting camp battle for me is Ogbonnaya, B. Jackson and Hardesty. I would expect only 2 of those to make the team.

Yeah, Ogbonnaya overachieved, Hardesty underachieved, Jackson was hurt... All I can say is thank God we drafted Richardson

I think the LB battle will be interesting. Maybe even a guy like Fujita is on the chopping block this year to make room for these young guys. It's amazing how many rookies could make this squad:

    Weeden/Richardson/Smelley/Benjamin/Cooper/Winn/Hughes/Johnson/Acho/Sweat/Wade/Davis

That would be 12/53, and it could be more...
