This is basically to give the Browns rookie WRs a chance to get in the game. We all know Cribbs is a decent reciever, but he's proven to be inconsistent over the years, not topping more than 40 receptions for a season.

The depth chart would feature Cribbs as a #4 reciever behind Little, Massaquoi, and Norwood/Cooper to recieve sufficient time. Maybe Travis Benjamin will be squeezed in there also at some point.

Cribbs will still remain the returner of kickoffs and punts, and will be starting on all aspects of the special teams unit.

I love Cribbs, but I also believe he is in a right place at #4 on the depth chart, he still can impact games by making our special teams unit sorta threatening.

Im also excited to see what Norwood, Cooper, and Benjamin can do this year. If Weeden has the accuracy and arm strength, these recievers could do some damage. I for one am most excited to see the recieving core play and develop this year. Holmgren took a big gamble not drafting a TOP 50 reciever, but his strategy seems more to be sticking with a core group of young guys, and wait for them to bloom. Hopefully our WR core has a couple flowers bloomin in it this fall...

Wasn't an argument similar to this made last year about this time?

Either way. Cribbs is not a real WR yes he is a incredible athlete but not a real WR. IMO his skills have been misused.

The dumb kickoff rule has really diminished his role in the gameplan. It's one of the big advantages that we had over teams like the Steelers and Ravens in that our return game was better, and we had a better chance to control field position. When the NFL took away the return, they might as well kicked Cribbs out of the league. I feel like we need to keep him on offense, but DON'T force the whole "WildDawg" plays into the game. So many times I'd see Cribbs in the backfield, and we all know the draw is coming. Which is why the end result is always a 2 yard run. I think he's perfect for more of a screen pass or slant pattern, but not a deep threat. His strength is he can find open space after the catch, not before.

            I hope it's diminished. He's done.

Don't get me wrong. I like the guy, but he was never a receiver. We blew it years ago when we didn't work him at safety while he was returning kicks. He would have made a great safety.

If everybody had like minds, we would never learn.

Rich4eagle pointed out, I maintain correctly in 2010, that Cribbs would never again be better than he was at that very moment. Rich's position was based in common sense and fact. Cribbs doesn't have the same speed and carelessness he had in his fireworks days. Back then, he was all reckless abandon and was motivated to excell or be cut.

Yes, I think anyone with a commodium would know that Cribbs is probably on the backslide of his career as a return man due to two factors: the change in the rule that affected every KR, and age.

It is highly possible that Travis Benjamin may be given some of those duties. Nothing wrong with having a replacement in the wings.

i agree w you Gipper.. i think TBenj will contribute to the team on Specials w KR and PR as well...cuz his 175lb ass ain't tackling nobody!

the League hasn't seen a productive returner that small since the Cube!!

even Baby Webster Slaughterhouse had about 5 lbs on him when he was a wideout/returner in CLE!

but Josh still has his number for a while. his 4 dislocated toes from 2010 are now completely healed. in 2011, adjusting to new return rules and contributing heavily on offense seriously hampered his production on Specials.

I also agree with Typical Browns and this year, as I also posted a week ago, I believe Josh will refocus and dedicate himself almost completely to ST instead of on offense. he will return to being the dominant force he once was in terms of play, although maybe not in terms of production due to the rule change giving him less opportunities. same amount of contribution--it's not that they will use him any more or any less than they have previously, simply WHERE he is being used will change...just as it has the past few years of his career.

hopefully Shurmer uses him in appropriate places this year, since multiple coaches whiffed on the concept of him at safety and/or running back...Wild Dawg and WR??? for shame.

Josh Cribbs is just now entering his prime, so he's certainly not old and he's definitely not afraid to run recklessly or tackle fools downfield 5 yards before anyone else shows...and not necessarily from the gunner position.

ST coaches have to gameplan around this dude, double him and Mike or they will eat you alive.

isn't this a contract year for him too???

he's got to be EAGER to show EVERYONE he has NOT lost a step...(so u be watching, Rich. 😠🥷😕😵😳🤔😍😛:DB)

all i know is there's no better guy in the league I'd rather Travis Benjamin learn behind.

Cribbs role [on offense] to be diminished this year?

Cribbs role to be diminished determined this year?

Cribbs role to be _________ this year?

                  better!

The only area I'd disagree with you on is when you stated that "Cribbs is entering his prime" I believe he's a little past it. His prime was in 2009. When he ran back 2 kickoffs against the Chiefs. Before that in 2008 was his Imaculate Deception run against the Steelers. He hasnt had near the level of success that he's had in the past 3 years

the apex of his production was then I agree, but for most in terms of age your prime is usually somewhere around 26-31,32ish...and 28-29 yrs is where it all comes together. some may argue earlier, i don't. Josh has a few more good years in him at least (imho).

Just look at the all purpose yards list and find Josh Cribbs, if the offense clicks in the west coast you can fucking bet on Cribbs APY to INCREASE this year not decrease.

In Cleveland failure is an artform.

Both Cribbs PRA and KRA were for 3rd best in his career last season. He still has something in the tank in my opinion. Honestly I think he would have busted another return or two to the endzone if we still had the amount of guys on the team who's sole purpose was working on special teams. We literally went from 3 full time gunners and blockers to 1, Ventrone. While you can plug rookies in as gunners, it is harder to plug someone in as a return blocker. Don't get me wrong, I'm glad we cut the dead weight. I think those special teams spots should be reserved for incoming rookies and young guys, but you could tell our special teams suffered a lot in part to the fact that we got rid of our super special squad.
