Verified: Browns May Be Sold

The Browns Board
108 40 6.1k
  • No way the Browns move again. We have a lease with the city until 2029, there's nowhere to move once The Los Angeles Jaguars become a reality and the Browns still bring in a ton of money. No way the owners ever let us leave in the next 20 years. Plus, once we start winning again our value will sky rocket. We are in the top half of teams as far as revenues go and we had sucked for 13 years. We aren't going anywhere.

  • Not a Lerner fan, but also not thrilled with the Browns potentially being sold to a guy who stated he was a 1000% Steeler fan.

We need stability to see if what we have now is going to work. Not another blow it all up, install a new President and GM deal.

Do you guys not get that his statement of being 1000% Steelers Fan was simply rhetoric for the fans who thought he wasn’t going to be good for the Steelers as he was a professed fan of two other organizations?

Just like a player who grew up a die hard Browns fan, goes and plays for another team, will become a fan of the team he’s on. Same for a Coach. Same for an owner.

Should he buy the Browns, he will become a Browns fan over a Steelers fan.

Exactly. He would be the biggest Browns can in the world the second he signs.

  • I like the sale, and I like it a lot.

  • He'll be a good owner. Passionate about football.

  • Here is a video of Haslam and his family talking about the death of his mother. Just to get some feel for the guy:

  • Video on Jim Haslam Sr. (or II) on his U. Tenn. football experience:

  • Jim Brown banged Haslam's wife

Maybe we can see why the Haslam's wanted to buy the Browns. They don't have to change their color scheme.

hopefully that's not going to happen. but if they don't post a 'close to' a .500 record this season would you still keep on a pres. that has a 9-24 record under his watch? you can keep everybody else, especially heckert who should be promoted to pres/gm. hopefully this won't affect training camp and our players and coaches commitment to win.

  • Unfortunately Mik, with Cleveland's luck, it will.

  • Holmgren addresses Cleveland media

During the opening minutes of Friday afternoon’s practice, Browns president Mike Holmgren addressed the Cleveland media as a follow-up to an earlier statement from owner Randy Lerner.

120722-mike-holmgren-ai.jpg As the Cleveland Browns’ players and coaches got practice started Friday afternoon to kick off their 2012 training camp schedule, team president Mike Holmgren addressed the media regarding a statement owner Randy Lerner released earlier in the day.

Lerner released a statement regarding Mr. Jimmy Haslam’s interest “in making an investment in the Cleveland Browns.”

“Randy’s No. 1 concern, in our meetings during the last couple of days, has been it not become a distraction, if possible, for the coaching staff and the players,” Holmgren said. “They have a hugely important job to do. We’re in the business of winning football games and we have a good, young team that, I think, is on the verge of what we all wanted.

“The No. 1 thing our owner wanted me to pass along to you was that this is a great community that deserves a fine football team. I think we’re getting close and he just does not want any of this to disrupt that for the coaches and/or the players.”

Holmgren said negotiations regarding the potential investment have been about “a controlling interest of the team.”

“He has a deep love for this team,” Holmgren said of Lerner. “He’s been with the franchise since his father passed away -- has been running it -- and is trying his best to do the right things. As his kids have gotten older, his life has changed a little bit and he was very concerned about the right person stepping forward, if he was going to sell the football team, and apparently, all the stars aligned in the last few months.”

Holmgren assured the media of one point in the negotiations.

“It’s my understanding that from the get-go, one of the stipulations, both principles understand the Cleveland Browns aren’t going anywhere,” Holmgren said. “The Cleveland Browns are the Cleveland Browns and they’re going to stay.”

Holmgren was on vacation earlier this summer when Lerner gave him a “preliminary report” on the potential investment. Since that initial call, the two men have been in constant contact with regard to the situation.

“You’re always surprised when something of this magnitude comes up, but it happens with a franchise,” Holmgren said “There are certain things we can’t talk about right now. The league has certain protocols. They have to vote on any sort of change. We’re following those rules; we’re in contact with the league and doing what we have to do that way.

“I don’t want people off-balance. This goes on in professional sports, on occasion.”

I hear the plan is to keep Heckert right where he is and that this Joe Banner will take over as team Prez.

they may be on the verge of it but under the walrus's watch they have fired a good head coach, brought in his guys, trumped the GM on draft day, invested in a QB for 2 years just to draft another etc. etc.

the team is young. i like heckert's drafts (most) and don't understand why we need holmgren to get paid as a our PR guy. i mean what else are his duties? take a vacation, with your record? you should have been counseling your coaching staff since the off season.

    see ya!

  • My guess is... that the sale won't be for the entire team, just a majority ownership, while Learner

is permanently moving to England to escape you know who's tax increases on the wealthy.

then he can be near his soccer whatever team. And the cost of living is a lot lower over there.

And he can then live in a medieval castle, and ride a white horse around, pretending he's King Arthur.

    "sigh"

just get on with the season. I hate waiting for the Browns to get their first game in..... @@

Why are you so bitter towards Holmgren?

Cal, I'm positive that the cost of living and taxes are more expensive in the UK than here. Look it up.

  • If our owner doesn't own a castle, I don't want him.

All kidding aside, this is a good move as long as the new ownership does not blow up the team infrastructure.

  • Sounds like it going to happen.

I applaud the sale to just about anybody.

This can do nothing but help.

In a one on one conversation with PK a few months ago, he told me Randy Lerner loved life before he inherited the Browns. Said he never wanted to own the Browns. Lives in Manhattan.

He told me the Browns would be sold but, truth be told, this is a far accelerated time line from what he predicted.

There might still be a future from this team!!
