Our Ol

  • Philly and Detroit run essentially the same defensive front. Our OL had trouble with both defenses, so it makes sense. Schwartz is more of a road grader tackle than a speedy pass blocker, so naturally he's going to have trouble with the wide 9 front.

They may have just exploited our weakness for the whole season.

    Well, obviously.

They're so useless they make absolutely no impact to that game whatsoever. Why not just throw 5 shit guys out there and load up everywhere else...that will work.

    Oh, wait...

  • No one literally blocked that guy on the last play! How can you not account for a fucking DE that is on the line of scrimmage.

That seems to happen a lot. There is ALWAYS someone coming in unblocked.

NOBODY EVER SAID THE OL was NOT important................ what I said was, TALENT to play the OL is a dime-a-dozen.

Again, as I demonstrated, teh Steelers, Packers, Pats and COlts, won their SBs with MOSTLY back up OL because the first team guys were all injured.

The physical difference between OL is minimal, IN fact, as was noted here, high dollar Joe Thomas is getting his ass handed to him.

The problem ISN'T talent, the problem is we don't knwo how to coach an OL.

The OL is a much more mental game than physical. It's looking at a jumble of guys and knowing which are going to blitz and which won't, what to do when your man stunts, and understanding how the play is supposed to develop behind you. That's where the talent comes in. It's not "hey I'll out my tits on this guy and he'll put his tits on me".

  • The oline played great vs the Packers.

The stupid eagles played like it's the superbowl.

The Browns played it vanilla and close to the vest, very predictable, etc.

They'll settle down. First team. Some guys on the second team wern't ready for primetime,

    OR an exibition game.

Did I see Greco in at LT when Colt was in there? Surely not...@@

Offensive linemen are all about teh same relative size, They are all big slow fatasses.

so instead of playing football at the OL position you set your sights on being a superstar at playing the male organ.

    what a waste.

Talk about mincing words. You are claiming the OL is not important. If talent to play the OL is truly a dime-a-dozen like you say it is, then in essence no OL is talented as they all would have the same skills. And a 5 time pro bowl OL getting beat on a couple plays suddenly makes him expendable? Please...

  • @king-ghoolie-lives said:

Well, again, in my opinion you are mincing words.

The mental aspect of playing offensive line is not, at all, in any way requiring a high intellect, or a high IQ. There are not that many different blacking schemes a guy can do. Block left, striaght, forward, for guards, pull left, pull right, then the trap, Pass protection? Ah, sorry, not many different things to learn there, either, that IS get my tits on yours, or else............

Out of ALL the positions on the football field, the Offensive linemen are the least physically gifted. COuld Joe Thomas ever come close to doing what Hines Ward did on the field? Ah no. Do you think Joe Thomas could even learn to ballroom dance, let alone present himself honorably on a goofy TV show? Ah, no. Footrace? One-on-one basketball? High Jump. Long Jump? Kick off/Punt return? Occasional trick QB play? Run the football out of the backfield or end around? Cath touchdown passes? Run in the open field without falling on his lard ass? Ah no, he couldn't. And of course Thomas is considered the among the best, Ward was not drafted so high up.

Again, no Father ever welcomes his newborn son into the world and says... " WOW, I hope he grows up to be an offensive lineman"

Indeed, when your kid comes home from his first tryout for pee-pee football and a Father finds out the coach put him on the OL, the father is not jumping for joy and calling all his buddies to brag, Instead, he kind of sulks, knowing that his kid is a lard ass.

More second, third string lineman have started in SB wins, than have teh starting players.

Most teams carry 10 guys to play OL which means there are 320 guys playing OL, AND, by mid season a lot of lard asses will be getting called in due to injuries. OL? All will see action, and a lot of it. Conversely, there are only about 50 Qbs will see action, and only 35 maybe who will see a lot of action.

Offensive linemen are all about teh same relative size, They are all big slow fatasses. They seldom make touchdowns and most cant even run 100 yards without collapsing like shit falling off the back of a dump truck.

    Talent? No, not much.

What they do need is to be disciplined, coordinated and understanding of some simple x's and o's. There is no IQ pressure on being an NFL player in general. Nowhere is it less than with OL.

The Browns need someone who can coach an OL. Get Rutiglino to run the O. Then you'll see something.

And in your first couple sentences, you've once again shown you know nothing about football other than what you see on tv.

You keep thinking that all there is to blocking is "left, right, forward" and I'll keep thinking all there is to accordion playing is "be a fat virgin with braces".

Try as hard as you might, you cannot oversimplify the game as much as you do. You may think you're some kind of genius, but there's 45,000 unsuccessful middle school coaches who think the same way as you.

    I've figured it out.

In pee-pee football, Ghools wanted to be a receiver but they wouldn't let him because he was too tubby. So the little meatball got put on the line and got his ass handed to him. He sputtered and stuttered all the way home, picked up his accordion and learned how to masturbate.

  • And, for the record, I'm sure Joe Thomas could have easily blindsided defenseless CB's away from the play and caught a few passes.

So yes, he could have done everything Hines Ward did. Except cry, because he doesn't have a vagina.

  • Its a little bit if both ghools. Yes o line is a position widely considered the least physical in the sport.

But the offensive line wins fucking championships. Idk how the hell you call yourself a guru of football and still call the o line "dime a dozen".

Every aspect of offensive play relies on the offensive line. You may have plays where the qb just hands the ball off, or the qb throws it to a reciever, or other skill position. They only touch the ball a select number of times, so their chance of impacting the play resides in the chance of them gettin their number called for the ball.

The O line, whether its a run or pass, is still the crutch holding the offense up. They block for the RBS on run plays, and protect the QB on pass plays.

Whatever aspect of the offensive strategy is being used, the O LIne can NEVER not be used. WRS have plays where they just kinda stand and fake blocking, RBs have plays where they fake play action and dont do anything. Even QBs have plays where they simply hand the ball off and watch. The O line has NO time like this ever in a game. They are important every single down.

How in the blazes can you not comprehend that?

  • I am not worried about the O Line. Really. There is too much talent there. They just need to play together and gel. We have two vets and the rest are rookies or 2d year guys.

I expect this game to be the worst game they will have all season.

  • At 73 million or whatever Joe Thomas's contract is you bet your giant ass id be calling my buddies to brag about my son the o-lineman.

  • I think the point Ghoolie is trying to make (and I'm sure he'll chastise me if I'm wrong)

is a variation of what USFBrown said a few posts ago--"Our O line is mostly 1 & 2 rounders

and they can't block worth shit".

Thus far, we don't seem to be getting much return on our investment.

  • he also stated that the GM should select STANDOUTS. well thomas was one (not picked by heckert) along with mack.

you only get so many cards to play. yeah we could have taken kalil but he wasn't a RT nor was decastro. so what do you do, use your 1st pick on an OL or your third? thomas has been probowler but he was also our first pick of that year's draft. you want standout at RB, that's why he chose TR.

my whole point before and after the draft was that our defense was maybe one first round pick (and maybe another in the later rounds) from being stellar. shore up everything on one side of the ball then go about doing the other side next year.

god knows we weren't going to make the playoffs this year and with all the 'evaluation' years that keep going by wouldn't that make sense?

so now we have a mediocre defense and a mediocre offense (so far). i know this is called building a team through the draft but when you got half of alabama and lsu's defense sitting there with 12 picks and we got squadoosh out of it, it kinda stings a little.

  • When it comes to the O-line (particularly the right side), I just don't feel like we're getting much bang

for our buck. There aren't many O-linemen worthy of a 1st or high 2nd round pick, so if you take a lineman early

I don't think it's too much to expect them to play lights out. The other night our line looked like a sieve--not

worthy of the $$$ we're paying.

I, too, wasn't blown away by our draft this year. If I'm wrong, I'll happily allow myself to pelted with rotten fruit.

Sorry, but I've been a Browns fan since 1966--the fact that our number 3 pick has already had a knee procedure scares

the shit out of me. Our QB looks like the 29 year old rookie that he is. I agree with Mik--there were players available

in the draft that would have given us a frothing at the mouth defense. From what I've seen so far this preseason, quite

a few very young player are going to have to play at a very high level this season or we're looking at 4-12. Or 3-13. Again.

check that >> more like four vets and one rookie. Lauvao is in his 3rd year and i believe both he and Pinkston played every snap last year. add a high pick right tackle to that pile and you'd think we'd be seeing more is all.

frankly we're all counting on them gelling as the season continues because we have no other choice. and god forbid we have another injury ANYWHERE.

Savage drafted Thomas, who aside from the pro bowl sadly hasn't pass protected for a franchise QB yet in his career.

Mangini drafted Mack, who isn't a huge upgrade from Hank Fraley (no offense Hank) who in addition to calling correct assignments and holding his own against the Hampton's and Ngata's of the AFCN he also used to hustle over and help someone up off the field every single play as well.

Steiny > Pinkston in pass protect, once the line gels hopefully = to or better in run blocking. keyword--hopefully.

and Lauvao? he has his moments. i was always curious how he'd do between Thomas and Mack tbh (to be honest).

screw it, they oughta just try Pittsburgh Pinks at RG next to Schwartzie and just throw the whole right side to the wolves >> let em sink or swim.

learn on the fly, pass protect a few, and run the ball down their throats this next preseason game until something clicks.

^ ^ ideas like this are also why i'm simply a fan and the fat slobs in the FO are eatin so well...or is it favoritism, nepitism, and some spectacular marketing of themselves that always seems to get us here?

not really rhetorical tbh. this inquiring mind really wants to know.
