Its been a while since I did a survey. So here is one for this week:
1. The NFL teams will be having their 4th and final preseason game at the end of this week and will probably play their starters little. Do you think that preseason games are a waste of time and just a money gouge.....or do you think they are essential to get the team ready for the season and to evaluate talent...or what?
2. List what you think are the 5 greatest team rivalries in sports. (not individual rivalries)
3. Who will win the World Series.....or who do you want to win the World Series?
4. A Hurricane is threatening the Southeast as we speak. What is the most frightful weather event you have ever been caught up in, hurricane, tornado, earthquake, tsunami etc. etc.
5. Neil Armstrong, first man on the moon, has died. Do you think that we should start resending men to the moon, or Mars, or beyond?

I think they are a little of all of the above. Certainly they are a money gouge. The games are not well played, and this year, not well reffed. But I do think they are somewhat necessary to get a team into the habit of playing a real game. And they do provide evaluation of talent under real game situations. Four seems like too many, but 2 seems like too few. To my mind, 3 would be the better number. What would really be wrong with a 17 game regular season schedule?

Ohio State/Michigan in college football
Browns/Steelers in NFL
Duke/North Carolina in college basketball
Bears/Packers in NFL
Oklahoma/Texas in college football
I think the Yankees/Red Sox is just a recent phenomena hyped up mainly by the fact that ESPN is located halway between NY and Boston and that most people on staff there are Yankees/Red Sox pole smokers. No real rivalry existed between these two teams proir to like 2004.
3. Who will win the World Series.....or who do you want to win the World Series?
The poor Rangers. I honestly would like to see them go back again and win this time. To be one strike away from winning was devastating. Not that I give a shit about Dallas or the Rangers, I just hate to see that kind of injustice bestowed on a franchise that has never won and came so close. To them, it was surely every bit as bad as the Indians loss in extra innings in the 7th game of the 1997 Series. If not them, then the Washington Nationals.
4. A Hurricane is threatening the Southeast as we speak. What is the most frightful weather event you have ever been caught up in, hurricane, tornado, earthquake, tsunami etc. etc.
Having lived in Ohio all my life I guess I am lucky to have never been caught up in anything truly nasty. We have had some 20 some inch snowfalls, and some severe thunderstorms, and unlike say, Xenia, I have never really been that close to a serious tornado. The worst I can recall is the derecho of 1969. Some roads were washed out, power down, but honestly I was never in any danger. Once when I was in San Diego on vacation an earthquake hit up in the LA area, and at least one person died at the Santa Anita racetrack, but I never really felt in in my hotel room over 100 miles away.

Absolutely. I mean, for all the woe is me about the cost, nothing has given this nation more pride in my lifetime than our involvement in the space program. As far as I am concerned they should be sending men to the moon and robots to Mars, the various moons of Jupiter and Saturn and to the other planets on a monthly basis.

1. I'm just glad there's football again, preseason or not. Preseason is fine for evalutaion in my opinion. If you don't want to pay, don't go.

4. I've been in a number of hurricanes but the worst was probably hurricane Hugo in the early to mid 90s
5. Absolutely. Space exploration is probably mankinds only long term hope for survival.

1. Money grab for sure. People can buy tickets in my section for $20 and I HAVE to pay $50 because the Browns MAKE you pay full price if you want season tickets

3. I hope it's Cincy, bit will probably be the Yankees
4.Waterspout out on Lake Erie. No fun at all.

They are essential. But they only need three games and they should charge only half price ... but neither of those things are ever going to happen without them finding the extra moolah somewhere else.

I think 4 games are 2 too many, so yes, it's a money grab by owners.

Rode some 'canes while on a fast frigate in Navy. 10 degree lists were the norm. You practically had to tie yourself into your rack when sleeping.

when I was 9 yeas old a tornado ripped through My yard on the 4th of July,1974 ad split a tree right down the center...It rained,hailed and snowed and we had thunderstorms...went from a temperature of 32 degrees to 84 degrees that day...never forget it...I had gotten a hellasciuos ear infection/ache that day.

Without a doubt...I pray to god we dont blow ourselves up but we need to become a space faring civilization if we have any hope of surviving and spreading beyond the solar system...The earth wont last forever...we need to terraform other worlds and in turn will come more technologies to serve Mankind better...At least...thats My hope.

Caught in a Typhoon while stationed on the USS OKinawa. Had to leave Subic Bay, RP with half the crew drunk due to typhoon. Marines puking all over the decks. Not fun.

On the Greatest Rivalries list, I perused about 10 different websites including ESPN/Fox etc. to find lists. Here is what I have found on the overall rivalries. I have excluded personal rivalries (like Jack vs. Arnie etc.)....and Euro soccer and other international ones. Just North American team sports. In no particular order these rivalries are mentioned.
Ohio State/Michigan
NC/Duke
Red Sox/Yankees
Oklahoma/Texas
Maple Leafs/Canadiennes
Auburn/Alabama
Celtics/Lakers
Canadiennes/Bruins
Packers/Bears
Avalanche/Redwings
Tennesse/UConn (women's hoops)

Nowhere did I see the Browns/Steelers on any of the lists, but that is obviously because the Browns have been so poor lately. Neither did I see the Steelers/Ravens in there either which some claim is a great new rivalry. Meh, maybe. I don't know how the Steelers/Cowboys got on there. Merely because they have met several times in the Super Bowl? So what. The Dolphins and Redskins have met several times in the SB, why would they not also be a big rivalry?

I was living in Tampa during Hurricane Charley. It was a Category 4 but I was in college and too drunk/stupid during the hurricane party to be frightful of it.

I worked at Kennedy Space Center and feel strongly that we must continue space exploration. The advances that come from the science and research are so great. But I believe we need the private sector to build, maintain, and launch the rockets. NASA making rockets is like any government entity, slow and overpriced.
