I did not see her speech but its nice to have black people on board to help shake the notion that the gop is if not racist, then let's just say racially challenged.

What would you call them then? People of color? That's puke worthy. Id like to know how that's any different than colored people? Besides white people have a lot of color variety in skin tone by itself, not to mention blue and green eyes and red and blonde hair. Dark-skinned? That could refer to a number of people. There's black people with skin as light as mine just with a browner color. There is no real good way to define them as a race.

Of course having a family from Haiti means she isn't African American.

That's likely not true. It's likely she is African-American. What's the history of Haiti, my brother? They gained their independence how?

It isnt' about the color of her skin. It's about the very cool, excellent person she is.

                    Well it's only skin color.

Her heritage and the Presidents actually have little to do with American black people's history but sure it's symbolic. I don't figure I share a great bond with the Visigoths but who knows?

But from a purely opportunistic view point black Americans certainly have openings in the Republican Party, and that's good.

I'm saying it was famously a slave revolt. And the slaves weren't brought to Haiti from China and Ecuador. So, Mia Love is likely the descendant of African slaves who were brought to Haiti. So African-American works fine.

Well that does take a yeoman's job of extrapolation but...

I suppose if Farrakhan and others are right and humanity actually did begin on the African continent Then I should start applying for minority benefits.

It's not hard to imagine at all. If a black person in Virginia is the descendant of African slaves brought here in the and 1800s and so is referred to as an "African-American", why should it blow your mind or offend you that a black person from Utah whose family descended from slaves brought to Haiti in the 1800s is referred to as an "African-American"? It's the same extrapolation used every day. As you like to say, maybe "you're just nitpicking."

You could refer to me as an Irish-American if you want. Same thing. Except the part where my ancestors came to America willingly.

Well, my grandmother had the brogue, so not too far for me.

But yes, at some point it's strange. I don't need to go back to Stonehenge, and for the most part I don't care anyway.

Generally, though, and for obvious reasons, the people who cling to their identity most are the people who had it stolen from them, or were oppressed. The Irish are similar in this regard.

You sound like an elitist / racist there pal, who's "pit stop"? there are real people living there.

Haiti was part of the slave trade triangle. Which is why it would be absolutely accurate/allowable for someone of Haitian descent to refer to themselves as African American.

Haiti is a shit hole island full of lazy people. Just a fact. Look at there status after how many years after the earthquake? Pitiful.

They also have about zero resources to draw from, so while I agree with you to some degree, it does go beyond that

Early man walked away as modern man took control. Their minds weren't all the same and to conquer was their goal. So He built his great empires and he slaughtered his own kind, and he died a confused man and killed himself in his own mind...

Why not? That's how you'd describe your ancestry - as Irish. You'd be an Irish-American living in Germany. If your family had gone straight from Ireland to Germany you'd be Irish-German. Just like there are lots of German Turks and Algerian French. Just like Mia Love is an American of African ancestry (also called an African-American) and living in Utah.

I don't know what the big deal is. Is it that you'd like African-Americans to forget about the whole African part and be just "Americans"? Well, they are just Americans. And when you want to expand on that, and describe their ancestry, you use the term African-American. Just like you do with Irish, German, Mexican, Italian, etc.

I hope we don't spend lots of time on stuff like this. Let's move on.
