    Anderson is guaranteed 14.5 mil.

8 mil has already been paid.

The rest of the guarantee.....is a 5 mil roster bonus due in March, and a 1.5 mil salary for 2009.

If the Browns were to cut Anderson they would have to pay him the 6.5 mil and they would also take a 6.5 mil cap hit in 2009.

None of 2010 is guaranteed, neither the roster bonus nor the salary.

In related news....shep's "left nut" just got nervous.

So they have to pay him either way?

First of all, his salary is $1.45M in 2009 (I know, knitpicking).

Second...how is a ROSTER BONUS guaranteed? It is a bonus paid if you are ON THE ROSTER. He also has a ROSTER BONUS of $2M in 2010...if the ROSTER BONUS is guaranteed...why isn't that one?

Funny how your 'INSIDE GUY' had it as a $5M guaranteed money in 2010 in the other thread...and now after I told you that NO GM WOULD EVER DO THAT, you are backing out on that and again throwing out numbers WITHOUT A LINK!!!

        Stolen from another message board:

        Derek Anderson-QB-BrownsJan. 9 - 10:59 am et

Derek Anderson's $5 million March roster bonus will reportedly count against the Browns' salary cap whether or not they cut or trade him.

Phil Savage left the Browns in worst shape than we thought. The bonus is reportedly "fully guaranteed." Cleveland can still avoid formally paying the $5M by moving Anderson, but it will count against their $123M allotment either way. This helps Anderson's chances of staying in Cleveland.

I think its a serious mistake to let DA go..if bq goes down we need someone thats experienced and capable da is both..i cant see us getting nearly as good a backup.

I say make someone buy his contract if they want him as a starter...

We have been rebuilding since 1964, Why stop now? GO BROWNS!

BROWNS WON’T AVOID $5 MILLION BY CUTTING ANDERSON

Posted by Mike Florio on January 9, 2009, 10:00 a.m. EST

NFL player contracts often include roster bonuses due early in the offseason. The goal is to force the team to make a quick decision as to whether the player is in the plans for the coming year.

Since base salaries typically aren’t guaranteed, a team can squat on a player long after the free-agency market has evaporated, and then cut him at a time when it’s too late either to get paid or to get prepared to be successful on a new roster.

Every once in a while, the team pays the bonus and then makes the ultimate decision later. The Titans, for example, once paid running back Eddie George a $1 million roster bonus in March 2004, only to release him later in the offseason.

This year, Browns quarterback Derek Anderson is due to receive a $5 million roster bonus in March. The widespread thinking is that they’ll try to trade him before the bonus comes due, because the only alternative is to cut him.

But a league source tells us that the $5 million roster bonus is fully guaranteed by $5 million in salary and other payments, all of which will hit the cap in 2009 because, in 2010, there is no salary cap.

So if the Browns cut him or if they keep him, they’re still on the hook for $5 million.

How this affects trade talks remains to be seen. On one hand, there’s even greater urgency for the Browns to do a deal before the roster bonus comes due, since that’s the only way to avoid paying the $5 million. On the other hand, the Browns might take the position that, if they’re on the hook for the $5 million regardless of whether they keep him or cut him, they might as well keep him around for another year.

New coach Eric Mangini might have been already laying the foundation for the “screw it, we’ll keep him” approach on Thursday, when he didn’t commit to Brady Quinn as the starter.

Regardless, the fact that Anderson’s $5 million roster bonus is fully guaranteed by $5 million in other payments represents a fairly large Cleveland Steamer that Phil Savage has left for the next G.M. (whoever it might be) to clean up.

soooo, the fact is...they DO save the $5m

the logic in that article was really dull.

The $5M bonus is NOT guaranteed...other monies are TOTALLING $5M. So, if the Browns pay the $5M, they are now on the tab for $10M.

you may be right here, and what you just laid out is what I told you earlier from "my source"

This all may be moot since there's a good possibility that Anderson wants no part of the City of Cleveland anymore.

Add to that the Vikings, Niners, and Bucs have all publicly stating that they will acquire a new QB. As well as the usual bottom dwelling teams that always need a QB.

Hell Anderson's agent may already have a deal worked out. That would explain how that Lombardi guy "KNEW" that Anderson was going to be gone soon.

Point is, Anderson won't get cut. No way. No how. Never was even an option. I just like to rub it in to the folks who hate DA so much for keeping Quinn on the bench that they want to see him punished for it.

Wrong! If they cut him before the roster bonus is due, they don't owe him anything for 2009 and the only cap hit they take this year is the remainder of the 8 millioin signing bonus.

A little clarification on the "CAP HIT". If he is moved the $5 mil roster Bonus is not applied to Cleveland's cap. But, his ititial signing bonus the first year was spread over the life of the contract, for cap purposes. If Cleveland moves him or releases him then the portion of the original singing bonus that was spread over the life of the contract (but not yet counted) would be counted towards Cleveland cap. If it is done before June 1st then it all counts for this year, if it is done after June 1st then it can be split between this year and next year.

But the June 1st thing really doesn't apply here because there is another "Roster Bonus" due before that.

Bottom line is whatever portion of the $8 million that was paid in the first year that was bonus money was divided by the amount of years of the contract. Say it was $6 million, just to have a figure. Then $2 million a year counts against the cap, if it is a three year contract, as long as he is on the team. If he is traded or released, then the other $4 million for the remaining two years would be counted this year.

If he is traded by the March deadline the $5 million for this year will be charged to the team that picks him up. If they cut him or keep him the $5 million is ours, plus whatever portion of the original bonus that was spread over the life of the contract.

This was one major screwup by Savage.

Unless the Browns can trade him by the March deadline for the bonus, they might have to just keep him and eat the salary. One thing to remember that Anderson's figure is already included in Cleveland's CAP and they are $10 million under even with it and after the league readjusts the cap figure they should be $15 million under.

If they can't trade Anderson then I believe they will have to make some room by attempting to trade Winslow. Winslow wants a new contract and the money just isn't there. They could reduce their cap figure by getting rid of some veterans like McGinest, Davis and S. Smith. Remember, you will need about $15 million to sign your draft picks, especially if you are picking at #5.

Good post, Lum. Amazing what actually talking football does for you.

So it's only "fully guaranteed" in the sense that it counts against the cap? Okay. Not a HUGE deal, since the actual money CAN be saved.

I think the only way DA stays is if Mangini wants to (or is allowed to) actually give DA a shot to play.

I just don't see that happening. It seems pretty clear Lerner has weighed in and BQ will be given his shot.

Which means DA accepts being a backup (doutbful) or is gone. I'm betting he's gone.

Your mancrush on DA is clouding your vision- anytime you have a #1 pick qb sitting on the bench and a 'pro bowl qb' shitting the bed its going cause a controversey.

Hate DA? Fans just want to win and the Browns were not winning. Everyone here has accepted that DA has his usefulness but the fact remains if you can't win in Cleveland you will be ridden out of town by the fans. BQ will suffer the same fate if he falters or chokes as did his predecessor.

Your leadership in the DA fanclub may be noble in your eyes, but has turned you to a rambling, reaching poster, looking for respect in all the wrong places.

Mangini told Lerner in his interview that he could win with Quinn. I believe that's waht Randy wanted to hear.

you may be right here, and what you just laid out is what I told you earlier from "my source"

I don't think anyone cares if he is "punished" or not. As long as he gets the hell out of Cleveland!!

                              Right.

I'm betting most here want the Browns to use Anderson to their advantage, whatever that may be. If it's getting a 4th or 5th round pick and eating some cash - so be it.

Seeing Anderson suffer does nothing for anyone here, IMHO.

I'd like to see him back in the NW. Plenty of support for him up there I'd imagine.

BQ or no BQ...It makes absolutely NO difference! If the Browns decided to go draft a QB or sign one in FA or even trade for one, so be it. The bottom line is that your boy Anderson proved only one thing here in C-town...He is NOTHING MORE THAN A BACKUP QB. When teams gameplan for him, he can't cut it. The only time he succeeded was when he had absolutely no pressure or expectations on him. He could not handle himself as a starter here. I wish him the best of luck and hope that he does turn out to be a good QB...SOMEWHERE ELSE! He has not been good here except for about the first half of the '07 season. I have no hate for DA...His time here is just over. If BQ is good enough, then great. If not, then he can go too! Cleveland fans simply want a winner! It hasn't been DA. BQ will get his shot. Hopefully, and you've even said it, he does well. Cleveland deserves it. Hopefully, DA does well wherever he ends up!

A couple months back, somebody here C&P'd an actual real article summing this up. The point was that if the Browns choose not to pay the five mill roster bonus, Anderson becomes a free agent. That's why it's a roster bonus. They compared it to Stallworth and Williams' deals, too.

you're probably talking about Florio's original incorrect article calling it a one-year deal.

That old article was wrong and set BQ Nation onto Cloud-9 which they have been slow to come down from as they try to trick themselves into looking past those big black letters that say "14.5 mil guaranteed"

That's a good point and I often wonder if anybody ever explained that to the 70,000+ who filled the stadium every Sunday intent on booing every play that DA was in the game and getting chants of BRAY-DEE started.

Apparently you haven't had the chance to speak with any of those folks yet.
