Kick The Field Goal First? Really?

The Browns Board

  • You take the guarenteed points first. You need 10 points either way. On 4th and 5 at that point you have to kick the FG so that you at least have a chance at tying the game with a hail mary. If you go on 4th down there and don't make it, you have no chance at all. At least kicking the FG still gives you some hope at a miracle.

  • You take the points. If you don't, the on side kick is moot.

    It's a no brainer really.

  • This is a special topic.

  • In that situation, go for the TD. It's a matter of time remaining to me. You're going to need a lot of luck either way, but I think you give yourself the best chance by going for it. If you get the TD and recover the onside kick, you only have about 20 yards to get into Dawson's range. If you miss on 4th down, game over, anyway. If you get the FG and recover the onside, you now have to go 50-55 yards in 20 seconds with no timeouts... not happening.

If the same situation happens with 1:20 left and no timeouts, I'd say take the points.

  • If you recover the onside kick you aren't going to be taking time to generate a TD...you're going to be on about your own 45...maybe one play towards the sidelines to get closer, but I'd think you have 2 or 3 hail marys and see what happens...maybe you get lucky.

    Agreed. This man knows football.

  • Are you kidding me with this question?? Kick the f'n field goal. You need a TD & a FG to tie, it doesn't matter in what order you get them, but you must get them both. Go for a 4th and 5 and you don't get it......Ballgame. Go for it and get it, but not a TD.......Ballgame.

Had they of kicked it with 1:30 left once they got in Phil's range, and then gotten the onside kick, they would've had over a minute to score the game tying TD.

    COME ON MAN!!!! 😠

So you are sating you would have stopped the on-going drive and kicked the FG??? C'mon yourself... 😛

Were I at the 40 with 4th and 6 and 37 seconds, I would kick the FG first...

Were I at the 6 with 4th and 6 and with 1:30 left, I would kick the FG first...

But being in the situation we were actually in, I go for the TD... one shot frm the 6 is better than 2 or 3 from mid-field...

..except that you would get zeros shots at midfield if you don't make the 4th down conversion..

  • no. go for the TD. will this be the factor/non-factor where shurmur gets fired or not? no.

    BUT

we ain't going to no playoffs. why not give it a shot? the least that could happen is we lose by 10 instead of seven. big whoopee! let's test these guys and see what they do in that situation.

no brainer. go for the TD.

  • FG for sure. Take the points when you can. If you don't get a TD on 4th and 5 you have no chance. If you take the field goal you have a chance with the onside.

  • I would think, being at the distance they were, you take a shot at the endzone. You score, and onside kick with 23 seconds left. You get the ball on your 45 which gives you the shot and time to complete a 15 to 20 yard completion, run up, spike the ball and turn the game over to Dawson for a long field goal try.

You go for the endzone and miss it, oh well. You loose by 10 instead of 7. Unless your trying to cover the spread, what's the difference?

I sure as hell would rather try a 50+ yard field goal to tie the game with my clitch kicker then to throw a hail mary from my own 45. But what do I know.

What on-going drive? It was 4th and 6. There was no going on from there, it's either kick the field goal or go for the TD.

If you play for the first down and get it without getting the TD, then you're just taking useless time away.

Going for the FG was the right call.

Right... I was saying call a play to try to get the 1st, but not score... 🙄

You clearly have the reading comprehension of a small dog, but try reading the post I to which I was replying. It's those words in the quote box at the top of my post which you quoted. It said, "Had they of kicked it with 1:30 left once they got in Phil's range, and then gotten the onside kick, they would've had over a minute to score the game tying TD." Thus my "stopping a drive" comment...

You may find that the quote box gives context to the reply that follows.

  • Clearly there isn't a right or wrong answer here, but the common denominator says go take the guaranteed points first then get the onside and toss it up. It's really all personal choice. Many coaches have made both choices at different points of their careers. That being said if I was a coach I prolly wouldn't even have a FG kicker. I HATE FG's. FG's lose games...lol

I'm pretty sure my record would suck too, but hey at least i wouldn't be known as being ball-less...just stupid...

If the same situation happens with 1:20 left and no timeouts, I'd say take the points.

I agree, I also would of agreed with kicking the field goal as soon as we got into range.

Either way the chances of pulling the comeback off are extremely low and I don't think you could kill Shurmur on this one no matter what he decided to do.

  • Why is this even a ???

In the NFL you take the points.

End of discussion. Better yet would of don't be in that situation....

Yes, I clearly have the reading comprehension of a small dog.

My mistake. I agree with that sentiment, stop the ongoing drive and kick the field goal. You're down two possessions. You need the field goal anyway. Get the field goal with as much time as possible, kick the onside kick, and if you get it back you have plenty more time to get down the field. It's not like Cincinnati wouldn't go right back into the prevent. You nickle and dime them on the sidelines, like we did, and you're back in the 15 with 40 seconds to get a game-tying TD.

  • When someone pays me cash money to make these kinds of decisions, then, and only then will I give you my answer. 😡
