I meant Schurmur was clueless. Wheeden is only doing what's he's told

  • I dont see how that will make any difference in short term?

This could be the single most idiotic post I've seen here... If he doesn't know the plays, why is he starting? And WTF is Chemistry a prerequisite for audibles? Option routes, maybe, but audibles?

Well, he's should be recognizing the Defense he is about to throw into and if the play doesn't fit the coverage, he should change it. The difference could be significant on any given play.

  • I don't recall Colt ever changing the play at all either once last year.

I'm not sure if Shurmur and Co. allow their QBs to change plays?

i thought the same thing last week as the Bengals were clearly blitzing and Weeden went ahead with the play.

  • Play packaging.

Shurmer used it heavily to temper Bradford's learning curve. There's no doubt he's using it now.

    Do a little research, guys.

  • ^ Fair enough...

I'll take an example of where he's read the key defender against a package...

    Or signaled a WR pre-snap...

Remember some of Kosar's comments form preseason? "Oh, this play is never gonna work." POW!!! You mean if Bernie could see it, the coaches couldn't?

Just sayin' Weeden should be able to change the play if he sees a situation where the odds of the play blowing up are high. Screw "play packaging." You think any top qb in the league has those constraints?

Actually, I'm not too worried about it long term- because I'm ready to say it's odds on Shurmur won't be back after this year- and should he go 0-5 he won't last the season when Haslam takes over.

Preseason is preseason. They were mostly calling plays to see what their talent could and could not do. They weren't calling plays to try and outflank the opposing teams.

Yuppers... Play packaging doesn't exclude audibles. Either choice in a given package might not work against a given defense.

Talent like recognizing a defense and altering the play would have been a nice thing to focus on...

Look... Although I'm no Wheeeeden fan, I wasn't trying to start any shit with this thread.

I was just thinking a day ago about how much I hate the college trend of the entire Offense looking to the sideline after lining up to get an audible from the HC/OC.

Then I started wondering if that'll ever happen in the NFL...

Then if we might start doing it... and whether Wheeeeden had audibled.

I couldn't remember an audible, so I asked...

It is not unusual for a rookie QB to operate under a tight rein early on. And when your HC praises you for checking down... I have a feeling the reins are pretty tight...

    Was just looking for confirmation...

Unfortuantely, we'll never actually be able to tell when he's read a key defender pre-snap. The whole point of packaging is so that the defense doesn't know they had you beat.

As for motion receivers, that does concern me. Normally the WCO is predicated on pre-snap movement to exploit mismatches more than most other systems.

Preseason is the most vanilla playcalling you'll ever see. I'm sure there was nothing more than the basics implemented.

You can say screw "play packaging" all you want, but it's here to stay. That's like the fogies in the early 1900's saying "Forward passes? Phooey!".

Packaging is revolutionizing the game insofar as the offense is now two steps ahead of the defense, instead of the traditional one-step ahead.

As for your top QB's remark. Play packaging was run a lot in New York with Brett Favre under center and the Aaron Rodgers-led Green Bay offense has been adapting it to the NFL as well. I don't know about you, but I consider those to be "top" QBs.

I agree Weeden should be able to change the play at the line of scrimmage if need be. But we don't know if everyone has a grasp on the playbook either. It might be that Richardson doesn't know the playbook well enough. Or Gordon. Or Little.

There are 10 other guys on the field with Weeden, you know.

You know as soon as I read a post where anyone is immature enough to call a player ON THE BROWNS roster a stupid nickname like "Wheeeeden" then I just discount that person to have a 2nd grade intellect and has absolutely no clue as to what the hell he or she is talking about. Obviously you are not a FAN of the Browns, you fall more into the troll/bandwagon category.

If the "team" doesn't satisfy you, you have 31 other options to choose from to root for.

Are you serious? No rookie QB can learn an entire playbook by week 2 of the NFL season. He knows some plays for sure, but you clearly don't know much about football if you couldn't recognize the same slant pattern to Momass about 6 or 7 times in both of the first 2 games. They have all been variations of the same play.

And as far as audibles go, every player on the field has to understand that a play has been changed and how each of their roles is going to be different from the original playcall. Otherwise you have Weeden call an audible to throw to Little and Little may have no clue he is the new target.

I don't see why that is so hard to understand..

I agree. I really doubt the rat....Shurmer looks like a rat....lasts the season.

Why should he if we don't win some games??

  • (reaelly drunk) Yea im no weeden fan by any means...squirmer wont do what say, shanahan does for RG3. Shanahan seems to have taken a back seat and let RG3 play and do what hes comfortable with...where as spat wants Weeden to learn everything and play the game his way

Right... pegged me to a "T" there Sparky. Couple minor corrections, however, if I may...

My "2nd grade intellect " barely got me through CWRU (CIT) with my BS ChemE... cum laude.

I've been a fan of the Browns longer than you've probably drawn breath.

    I'm a fan... not a blind fanatic...

I love the Browns... but I'm a realist...

    I do not love...

    - this FO;

    - this HC;

    - the WCO; or

    - this QB pick.

Rather than offer insight adding to the discussion, it seems that 90% of your posts attack other posts where the author does not drink the Kool-Aid... and I'm the troll...

So take your "Browns: Love 'Em or Leave 'Em" mentality and shove it up your ass...

And, Sparky... have a nice day... 🙂

I wouldn't advise building an offense around a 28 year old unproven commodity.

He needs to prove he has the tools to be a consistent NFL starter before we start letting him call any shots.

I hate Pat Shurmur, but he is right when he limits Weeden's control, for now.

Sorry but this is just an older Tim Couch. This team will be looking for another QB next year.
