An Unbiased Opinion Of Brandon Weeden And Your Qb's From A Fan Of Another Team. (And A Small Rant On The Lame Steeler Fans)

The Browns Board

  • As you can see, Im a Redskins fan, but I started coming to this board back in February of 2012 when the rumors of the RG3 trade became reality, I would always stop here and check to see if you guys had any insider news on it etc; Anyways, I still come by once in a while because in all honesty, I dont mind the Browns at all. I LIVE in Altoona PA, which is about 1 hour drive from lame Pittsburgh. Every stupid idiot in this town is a Steeler fan, and they're all hicks, I hate the Steelers with a Passion that not many can understand, I hate they're fans and I hate they're team. A lot of you may not know this but Steeler fans are "fair weather" fans. They have no idea what its like to struggle, and when they do, they dont root for them. Before 2004, and Bens rookie year, you never seen people wearing their STeeler jerseys, but after his 15-1 rookie year, all these stupid hicks came out of the wood work to root for their sorry team, and they still hated on them that entire year until the big super bowl push, and now they all lie and say they have been fans forever, but EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM couldnt name 5 players on the team 10 years ago, its a freaking joke. I also obviously hate the Ravens just because their fans talk so much smack, like they accomplished something. Yea, they won a sB in 2000, who cares, why they always hate on the Redskins just baffles me, I know Baltimore and DC are close, but give me a break. The Bengals are, eh... I dont care about them honestly. Anyways, on to the reason I wanted to post here:

As I said previously I drop by every now and again just for entertainment/news (I always was a Trent Richardson fan when he was in college). I always see big arguments between Weeden supporters and Colt supporters. I just wanted to give an unbiased opinion from an outsider perspective.

Weeden is not bad at all. The first game he was bad, but it was his first game, you have to give the guy more time than that. Hes actually done a decent job at getting rid of the ball and throwing under pressure the past two games, which is something he struggled with in college and also the first two games. Hes progressing, and thats all you can ask for. Yes, hes a bit older then most, and yes he will be 29 in a month, but I could seriously see him being a very serviceable QB by seasons end. You may not get many seasons out of him, but better than nothing, thats for sure. When talking about him vs. Colt, people cannot defend him when it comes to the Oline and the drops from WRs though. Because this is the same thing Browns fans said about Colt last year. "Colts WRs are always dropping passes, Colts Oline cant block, etc etc" They both have the same problems there. And in all honesty, its true for both sides, the WRs on your team have dropsies. Little is so gifted too, its crazy he drops passes when they are literally in his hands, it seems like he always gets open and runs great routes. Anyways, back to subject at hand, Weedens one big problem is telegraphing his passes. He rarely looks off to fool the safeties, and seems to always stare down his primary target. He still struggles under pressure and seems scared to get hit at times (like Blaine Gabber last year), but not as bad as before. Colt could take a hit, and Colt didnt stare down his WR's, but Colt was always throwing the "safe" ball, always scared to try to make a play, Weeden has more of the gunslinger mentality. By the way, 322 yards after throwing the ball 52 times (and under 50% complete) is not impressive, regardless of having a 300 yard day or not. Im pretty sure if Colt threw 52 times, hed have over 300+ yards too. The 2 QBs are actually equal and each have their own strength and weakness. Colt is mobile, can take pressure better and doesnt telegraph as bad as Weeden. Weeden has a much better arm, taller, and takes more chances then Colt. To be completely honest, I think they both are going to get you the same win/loss record THIS year. As for the future, I think you may as well stick with Weeden. Not only because hes a first round pick, but because he has the easier problems to fix. Looking off safeties, dealing with pressure and telegraphing are all coachable things. Unfortunately for Colt, his arm strength will never get THAT much better, and he will always be a bit on the short side. Me, personally, I like Colt better just because he seems more of a leader, and Football was always his passion, the one thing I dont like about Weeden is how he chose Baseball first, for many years. Then he quit (supposedly the main reason is because of an injury but I dont buy that), and came back for a 2nd chance to try football. I just dont feel like its his passion, he doesnt seem like hes that hurt when they lose, right after the game last night hes smiling, laughing and having a good ole time. I just think Weeden is in it for the money, he doesnt care too much about the game, but maybe thats just me. Colt seems like he lives and breathes football, he also seemed to be a great leader and the guys really liked him, but its not just his lack of arm strength that hurts him, its his hesitation to take chances. With that being said, I would still stick with Weeden and try to coach out the wrinkles, he has more talent. Like they said in the movie Rudy, "God made some people to be football players..." Colt just doesnt have enough of the physical skills/talent to progress and continue on with a very successful career, though he would be a great back up (and again I like Colt a lot better then Weeden personally). As for Weeden, he could start contending next year, but this year is going to be a learning curve, regardless of his age, he is still a rookie. They will fire Shurm and Holmgren, and go and hire a big name coach and GM. I always thought Cleveland AND Washington were just a QB away from contending, and I hope we both found those QB's, but you truly never know. Good luck Browns fans, please beat the STeelers this year, I beg you.

  • Great post. I have also been thinking that Weeden needs to stop staring down the first option. However, he has made less mistakes overall as the weeks go by. I wasn't especially happy when he was drafted, it seemed like they were drafting him unnecessarily early in order to justify making him the day 1 starter. Having said that, if he keeps making progress, I will be 100% behind him. I liked Colt, but after watching him throw the past 2 seasons, Weeden's arm strength is really noticeable and will make a positive difference. If the receivers (especially Little) make a few of those catches, the Browns could have pulled off an upset, or at least overtime, last night. Overall this team isn't going anywhere this year, but it is more exciting to watch than last year. I just wish Shurmur would call better plays on offense, I thought Mangini was more imaginative.

  • Nice post. Just out of curiosity, did you ever watch Colt play in college? No I'm not trying to compare college ball to the NFL because theres a HUGE difference and everyone knows that, but man...He had plenty of arm back then, I watched plenty of his games and actually watched one today on ESPN classic and I was just baffled trying to figure out how people say he doesnt have the arm, but who knows maybe a majority of people on here dont pay any attention to college ball. Maybe it was the pinched nerve in his throwing shoulder that just finally getting back to 100%. Weeden has been improving as of late, but I dont think he'll ever be anything special, besides like you said he probably doesnt have the great passion for it. Hopefully he wont fold under pressure and just give up to try soccer or something.

Sorry about the late reply, and I apologize for any typos since I'm doing this from my phone; but, yes I know exactly what you mean and have often pondered the same thing about many nfl qbs that seemed to har great arms in college but not the pros. It always seems like they can rocket the ball 60 yards in the air with ease in college but then can't throw a 30 yard slant web they get to the nfl. I mean, even Tebow looked like he had a cannon in college! And yes, colt looked like he had plenty of arm in college too. It's very weird that so many qbs become noodle armed in the pros. Sam Bradford, colt, Tebow, Sanchez, and many others were fun slingers in college but just don't seem to have the power in the pros. Maybe the speed of the game makes it seem like they have less of an arm ? I think you have a great point though because I have always wandered that, too. Is the ball much different of a size between college and nfl? Also, thank you for the kind replies, I appreciate it. I want to note I just got done watching Cleveland 95 on nfln, and my heart bleeds for all of you. I literally cried at the end of the show when the players went over to the dawg pound and hugged the fans. I remember our local newspaper actually did a small article on it but it didn't do it justice. I was only 11 when that happened but seeing it now on tv just breaks my heart, I couldn't imagine the pain the city went trough. Art Modell is a selfish man and no amount of money is worth hurting people like that. Regardless of the past the dirty ravens know in their hearts that the trophy they have is actually a Cleveland super bowl win. Not Baltimore and their fake ass fans.

Regarding QBs and arm strength- not so much speed of the ball- it's how fast defenders can react to (relative) slow tosses. the windows are a whole lot smaller to throw into.

Regarding the '95 season- I'm a lot older than you. It's good that finally came out- and I think you can now understand the absolute hatred some Cleveland fans still harbor for Modell. I've forgiven, but I still hope he NEVER makes the HOF.

In the end Art got what he deserved- the loss of ownership- which was his sole reason for moving the team. His "I had no choice" is a damn lie, could have sold to Al Lerner then and there, but nope- I want my cigar chompin' kid to inherit the team.
