    Niners interviewing Browns assistant

    Comment Email Print

    Associated Press

SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- Rob Chudzinski, the Cleveland Browns' offensive coordinator for the past two seasons, is interviewing with 49ers coach Mike Singletary for San Francisco's vacant offensive coordinator job.

Former St. Louis coach Scott Linehan and Indianapolis receivers coach Clyde Christensen interviewed with the 49ers on Friday.

Chudzinski was praised in 2007 when Cleveland's offense scored 402 points and finished eighth in the NFL, but his unit slumped to 31st this season, contributing to coach Romeo Crennel's firing. Chudzinski got a contract extension from Cleveland last season, but isn't expected to stay on new coach Eric Mangini's staff.

Mangini, fired by the Jets before taking over in Cleveland, is expected to hire New York quarterbacks coach Brian Daboll as his offensive coordinator.

The 40-year-old Chudzinski is an up-and-coming offensive mind, but he was known for a pass-first philosophy with Cleveland quarterbacks Derek Anderson and Brady Quinn, which might not fit Singletary's vision of a run-based offense in San Francisco.

The 49ers are searching for their seventh offensive coordinator in seven seasons after Singletary fired Mike Martz late last month. San Francisco's offense improved under Martz after being the NFL's worst in two of the previous three seasons.

This is great news. Wherever Chud goes, I hope he convinces the GM to trade for DA.

And San Fran may be interested. Hill was okay when Singletary made the switch but they may be ready for a new flavor of sucky QB.

      Go West, DA!

I am interested in nothing from the Niners but draft picks.

          3rd preferably.

Although, come to think of it, O'Sullivan would be okay as a #2. Of course, he's just going to follow Martz wherever he goes because he's guaranteed a job with him, evidently.

Well, there's no good answer to that because one guy has an NFL career and one guy doesn't.

The best thing I can say is that DA has shown he has a legit NFL QB's arm and maybe heart but not head or feet. Oh, and a mediocre record as a starter and an abysmal passer rating. So, all in all, he's not special.

Quinn is still basically a complete NFL unknown. He's a rookie starter who had a promising debut. That's about all we can say about his playing time since his other two starts were at best affected and at worst ruined by his finger injury.

But if you're really asking "Who should start for the Browns in 2009?" the answer is simple:

                Quinn.
