Mangini should shell out his LOVE for DA
-
First, I agree that DA is gone or at least should be. New coach, new GM. You need BQ as the QB to get the fans even more excited.
Second, The "Horrible" DA threw for 3700yards, 29 tds and 17ints and won 10 games in his first year of starting at the age of 24, with a new offensive system and after having 3 starts the prior year. That is the SAME situation that BQ is in NOW. He will be the starter at age 24 with 3 starts under his belt and will have a new offensive system. So, from what I have read I should EXPECT BQ to throw for more than 3700 yards, to throw for more than 29 TDs, to throw less than 17 ints and to win more than 10 games.
I think the only goal above that BQ will beat is to throw for less than 17 ints and he will complete more than 54% of his passes. Other than that I think he will fall short on every other goal including wins.
As far as DA sucking in High School, He was the NUMBER ONE recruited QB in the entire nation the year he came out of High School and I don't think he lost any games. In college he joined an OSU team that had just started to win any games and he had to throw the ball 50 times a game with HORRIBLE receivers. You think that BE drops the ball, his receivers for most of his career with Horrible. Generally had one receiver a year that could catch (prolly part of the reason he locks on receivers). I know it was in BQs sophmore year but he and OSU did beat BQ and ND in a bowl game also.
Now, I can agree that he is not the answer in Cleveland. But he is only what 25? And He has shown flashes of greatness, even this year against the horrible defense that the giants posses. I do think that he will get a shot to start in this league again and I do think he will get it next year. Will a team trade for him? I think so, probably for a 3rd round pick. I think he will go to SF or Minn. Both would be good places for him.
As far as BQ goes. I don't know what he will do in his first year starting. But, I hope it is somewhere close to what DA did in his first year of starting at the same age and with basically the same conditions. Though BQs conditions are probably better because RAC is not here.

Some good points made CMAC. The one area you lost me was in the 2nd paragraph unless the avg opponent on our schedule will finish with 5 wins or less like the 2007 schedule that featured only 4 opponents capable of bettering 8-8.
Where I'm going with this is the goal for BQ is to win and get BETTER from experience - not worse. DA had a miserable December in 2007 and he stunk for the majority of his starts in 2008. Is that the sign of a rising star or a growing offense?
What people ALWAYS miss in this conversation was we TRADED UP to get Quinn, which was why we didn't draft first in round 1 of 2008. Don Shula didn't draft Dan Marino in te same place of round 1 we got Quinn so he could he could start another young inexperienced QB instead. What's inexcusable is that we only know DA is NOT the answer and the guy we traded Heaven and Earth to get has 3 starts to his name going into his 3rd season. Just a reminder, DA was 0-3 in his first 3 starts of 2006. The last one of those featured 4 INTs and a 7 point outcome vrs a 4 win Tampa team. Therefore, in all 3 seasons we witnessed DA getting starts - we can safely conclude that he got progressively worse toward his final start. If he's not careless with the football vrs the Colts - 6 points was enough to BEAT them. It wasn't Peyton Manning scoring on us - it was Mathis giving us his version of "The Chances Are" Cleveland loses from a careless QB.
2-3 years ago our message board had a visitor from a guy that went to the same high school and college with DA. He said he was a fan of DA because he thought there was a wide world of upside. However, throughout the proces he said DA had a frustrating and maddening tendency to be very erratic. The numbers were there that you want; BUT the timing of excellence and running cold wasn't in the right parts of the seasons from him. It was like a "this guy will break you heart warning." And the Cinderella story of 2007 had an early midnight (dude laid an unforgivable egg at Cincy near Xmas which mirrored his same type of outing vrs TB the year before). SAME guy? You bet! This never fully evolved into the Kurt Warner story that Loverboy (Lums) kept describing to us.

I don't think its worth the 5 mill cap hit to do the "who's better" thing one more time.
I don't think they can avoid it by simply "cutting" him. It's a 5M wash either way.....a 6.5 mil cap hit or a 5 mil bonus, you're paying either way as I see it.
His fate comes down to 3 things in my mind: what another team might offer, if DA can still endure Clev, and/or if they'll spend....$XX on a potential back-up. After the 5M wash you pay regardless, you could keep him as a backup for about 1.5 Mil more.
Unless a team is screaming for him, it sounds like a bargain to me.

It's a cap hit. He doesn't collect the money if he isn't on our roster. End of story.
You guys act like 5 million in cash for a guy to do nothing is nothing. Billionaires aren't stupid. Why pay someone money if you don't have to?
(PS: How many playoff games did DA lead us to? I seem to recall another team that actually made it into the playoffs, instead of watching the QB shit the bed when it was all on the line).

Line up the same exact schedule, same roster with no injuries and Edwards catching the ball and we'll see what happens.
I applaud your effort, you've always went way out of the way to hide your DA fetish, which is what brought you to this board in the first place. However, you will need to do better than this in the future to qualify as an actual Browns fan and not just a Derek Bear guy.
This post was eerily similar to an OSUSEV post.

his whole delusion would get smacked around like his mom at a portland truck stop

This somewhat explains his Tonya Harding woodrow.

You can count me in with him. Something about Tonya does it for me. Might be I'm just naturally attracted to batshiite crazy wimmen. I dig Amy Fisher too. God help me.
Doug
I could be mistaken about the whole Tonya Harding thing.
Lumsford is probably just using her to get to Jeff Gillooly.
For the record, I would have tapped Tonya back in her feuding with Nancy days, but not the Tonya that went Pittspile woman and started boxing all fat and yit.

As I think about this more, I wonder why Savage made a contract like this? Did it never occur to him that what we saw the last half of last season was who DA was? That he might just continue to suck and we'd need to dump him?
Not taking picks for Anderson when the chance was there or trading him for value, then signing him to this contract. What a freakin' dumbass. I hope he doesn't get another chance in the NFL.
What an asshole. I see why Lerner canned his ass first.

Yeah, the DA move may be the worst thing that Savage did while he was here. It set our development back ANOTHER year and deprived us of a year of BQ development and two potential players.
For a supposed personnel/draft guru, it seems particularly odd that he would turn down two high picks for a player he SHOULD HAVE KNOWN was severely -- and predictably -- limited when he already had a top QB that he just drafted.
It's such a weird situation it makes me wonder if Savage actually was the one who made the Quinn pick or if it really was that diabolical mastermind Randy Lerner, who poses as a clueless bajillionaire but really is a football madman.
Or, Savage committed the cardinal sin for a personnel guy and fell in love with his own genius and overrated his entire roster.
It's starting to look more and more like that is the case.

Dam, I bring this up all the time, but that Browns Backer meeting last spring after DA was resigned pissed me off. Phillip just wouldn't stop blowing DA and him asking all his scouts who the QB was over and over was annoying. It reeked of a Napoleon complex.
His legacy here will be the botching of DA/Quinn to me.

Agreed. He made a monumental and inexplicable miscalculation.
OR...there is a lot more to the story that we'll never know.
For example, maybe RAC really wanted DA and Phil actually listened to him? Maybe Phil caved to his coach on the QB?
What else makes sense here? Why draft a QB with your 1st round pick and then sit him for the journeyman backup?

Masters, do you know if they can avoid the bonus by simply cutting him? As in, is the bonus guaranteed, if we cut him is there a chance they could owe the 4.66 you claim and the bonus?
yikes!
If so, looks like we should get used to the idea of an expensive 2nd QB hanging around. Phil stated keeping them both as long as possible was his intention on numerous occasions. We filled in the blank for him, whether that meant 1 yr, etc.
If Savage literally meant what he said that's why he would allow the contract to be written up that way, Lemosley01.
Phil made our bed, most only go one way. If the above has merit, from a financial standpoint, trading Anderson seems akin to laying atop the covers feet first with our coat and shoes on. Shefter probably knows as much about this situation as anyone right now, given his access. And Mangini may know even less than him right now, so this is all.....fun.
