Bernie Kosar: New Browns owner 'gets football'

Is Bernie Kosar solidifying a relationship with Jimmy Haslam that could lead to a beefed-up role with the Browns?

Kosar is lobbying for a place on the team he helped lead to its last sustained success more than 20 years ago.

Asked if he is willing to work for the Browns full-time, which has been an issue with him in the past, the iconic ex-quarterback said, “Oh, absolutely.”

Kosar broached the topic in the wake of the Browns’ latest loss, 17-13 at Indianapolis.

He praised Haslam, who was approved as the Browns’ new owner in Chicago last Tuesday.

“Mr. Haslam gets football,” Kosar said. “He knows football. He lives and dies it. That’s what it’s gonna take.”

Then Kosar revealed an interesting nuance of their relationship.

“I was getting texts (from Haslam) at 6:15 in the morning, so, he’s ready to go,” Kosar said. “The excuse days are over.”

Kosar has performed assorted roles with the Browns, some official and others not, since they returned as an expansion team. This goes back to the night of the expansion draft in Canton, when Kosar paraded around Memorial Civic Center like a rock star.

His duties often have been vague, and he often has hinted he wanted a bigger, more defined position.

This could be his chance, with Haslam running the show and Joe Banner coming in as his new right-hand man.

Haslam unintentionally became the star of the show Sunday when CBS cameras caught his emphatic reactions to Josh Gordon dropping a go-ahead touchdown pass and coach Pat Shurmur opting not to go for it on a fourth-quarter fourth-and-1.

“I love it,” Kosar said, alluding to the passion Haslam unwittingly showed to a regional TV audience.

Kosar likes rookie quarterback Brandon Weeden.

Of Weeden and rookie No. 1 overall draft pick Andrew Luck, Kosar said, “It was incredible. It looked like two 10-year pros.

“The throwing of the ball, the leadership of the teams, the offensive performance with neither team having many weapons around them, was incredibly exciting.”

Weeden passed for 264 yards. Three backs totaled just 42 rushing yards, including 8 yards on eight carries by rookie Trent Richardson.

Richardson, dealing with a rib injury, said, “I was not myself.” Kosar blamed the blocking.

“From the line to the tight end to the fullback, we’re just not creating movement,” he said.

Kosar said he is “a big fan” of the 21-year-old wide receiver, Gordon.

“His game is really developing,” Kosar said. “The timing between those guys (Weeden and Gordon) ... I’d love to work with these guys.”

Don't know about anyone else around here, but this would be optimal in my opinion + + + + +

  • Stop living in the past and leave BK where he should be - out is some pasture.

  • I'm all for Bernie being involved with the team some way or another but I'm not exactly sure how he'd fit in.

Maybe a scout? Kind of hard to imagine him being involved in coaching because he's never seemed to have any interest in it since his playing career ended.

As much as I love Kosar you got to wonder is this guy for real or is he just trying to latch on to whatever he can get while he can.

I've said half jokingly before that Haslam should bring him in as GM but that's kind of implausible.

It's more of a fantasy that the once fan favorite QB of the good times comes in to save the day.

With all that being said though, you never know.

Bill Belichick uses Bernie as a sounding board for O-line stategy's, playcalling, and personnel. Not to mention, Bernie told New Orleans to draft Jimmy Graham.

Bernie is a better talent evaluator then ANY person the Browns have had for 13 years

  • I would LOVE to see Bernie back with the Browns & I wouldn't be a bit surprised if Haslam DOES hire him. In what capacity? Who knows, but Bernie DOES have a brilliant football mind.

    Mike

  • He can be a face, but Bernie isn't some great football mind. As long as he isn't a decision maker, idc.

He can be involved in the organization

I totally disagree. If you've ever listened to some of the preseason games where Bernie is the analyst, he basically can tell if a play is going to work or not just on how the defense sets up.

Would make a tremendous quarterbacks coach or even OC, if he wants to get into coaching.

PS Though it wasn't exactly Rocket Science, Bernie saw the same thing I did against the Colts- the run blocking STUNK.

The run blocking has stunk all season except one game. The o line has been inconsistent every game. Hopefully they get better because we have a lot of high picks there and we're not getting nearly enough in return for those high picks.

  • He could fill some role with the Browns, not in a coaching capacity, but maybe as a PR man to the fans. Most if not all fans like him.

  • Give the man a job. He's loved by the fans, he's got a good football mind, and he has some highlight films that can possibly inspire the team. Forget Cleveland '95 a football life. If you want the team to be pumped about being browns show them "the NFL's greatest games: marathon on the lake"

Personally id love to see him be quarterback coach, or, why not, put him in the box and let him do chilly's job. The man knows what the hell is going on on the field.

Plus, god knows, Bernie could use the work.

Seriously, the guy has an incredible head for Football.

He sits in the Booth calling the Defense and what's going on, what should be done to counter it, etc.

The guy designed plays live on the fly during a game (Denver Touchdown).

He designed a play when he was backing up Marino in Miami that they used to score a TD.

Bernie could easily be a QB Coach or an Offensive assistant, and possibly even on OC one day - he's that sharp.

    .

  • I love reading Bernies tweets on facebook. He has incredible passion for the Browns. It's totally up to Jimmy, but i wouldn't mind seeing Bernie officially involved, even if he is just a "face". He knows football and loves the Browns, and the fans love and respect him ... I don't see a problem with him being involved despite what the Grumpy Old Men of the board will say.

I never heard what you say about BK and BB. They DO have a history, you know.

Any way, I've heard BKs been closer to the bottom of a glass than he has to the NFL in the last 20 years.

  • Maybe they should hire you, Larry!!

    I resemble that remark, Zombino!!

Agreed completely. Never seen analysts break it down as good as he does.

OK John- I defended Lance Armstrong way too long. Sure, Kosar can sound like he's drunk- sometimes. But like I was saying, it's innuendo- until there's more documented concrete "for instances". Someone saw him in a bar drunk? Doesn't count. Wife put on the divorce decree he's a boozer, or a few DUI's and seeing him staggering out of the local watering hole by credible sources 4 times a week, I'll buy into the rumor.
