Best Decade Of Football
-
What in your opinion is the best overall decade in football history? And why? This will probably be largely subjective but I'm interested in what decade will be the winner.
My vote goes for the 80's. Some of the best quarterbacks of all time had their heydays in the 80s, not to mention the last time the Browns were respectable

This one.
In the 90's, Art Modell.
In the 00's, we sucked.
Now, we suck, but I actually have hope for our team to play well this year rather than waiting for next year.
-
I'd say the 80's also. The Browns were good. They were in the playoffs 7 out of the 10 years
-
80's best time of my life. Sitting 80 people huddled around a old wood consol tv. I think that is why many of us associate the Browns with family.
-
I'd say the 80's, for all the reasons people have noted.
But I'd also say, that despite the fact I was an intelligent High School kid in the 80's (right during the Brown's 4 stellar years), I had less understanding of the business of football than I do today.
I've become a bit jaded about all professional sports, because of how the business side seems to be ruining the fun of it all.

Some of the best QBs were in their heyday in other decades too - the 1980s aren't any greater than any other decade.
1970s: Terry Bradshaw, Roger Staubach, Bob Griese, Fran Tarkenton, Ken Stabler
1990s: Troy Aikman, Jim Kelly, Brett Favre, Steve Young
2000s: Tom Brady, Peyton Manning, Eli Manning, Ben Roethlisberger, Drew Brees
The 1980s also were a decade of the absolute worst Super Bowls - while the 2000s have featured the greatest Super Bowl games ever; the Patriots 16-0 season, two of the greatest Super Bowl upsets ever (Rams vs. Patriots, Giants vs. Patriots), games determined in the final seconds, records broken.
lacked any of the great rivalries like Steelers vs. Raiders, Steelers vs. Cowboys, 49ers vs. Cowboys, Patriots vs. Colts
How that compares to the Browns having some relevance I am not sure....

I think the late 60's and early 70's were the best.
The Purple People Eaters.
The Fearsome Foursome.
The No Name Defense
The Over The Hill Gang.
The Raiders v. The Chiefs
The Cowboys v. The Redskins
Real Hated Rivalries.
Unitas, Namath, Tarkenton, Jim Brown, Gayle Sayers, Larry Csonka, Biletnikoff, Warfield, Jim Otto, Butkus, Willie Lanier ... every Sunday was an "event". It was before steroids (Steelers and their roided up o-lines taint the late 70s for me)but after color TV, the AFL and then the merger, the beginning of the Super Bowl ... so if I were to pick a ten year period I would go 1964-1973.
But for an actual decade, probably the 80's. I enjoyed the 70's more because I was a kid. The 80's I was 16-26 y.o. so I had other things going on, so, as I get older my fondest memories are the seventies, even though it wasn't a great time to be a Browns fan. Just looking at it as a Browns fan ... undoubtedly the 80's. Kardiac Kids + The Dawgpound ... that was a blast.

I liked the 70s the best, because that's when I became addicted to the Browns & the NFL. Jerry Sherk & Walter Johnson, Leroy Kelly, Greg Pruitt (tear away jersey), & Brian Sipe. Clarence Scott, and the under rated Charlie Hall & Thom Darden. The 80s are special too, but for us fans it always ended in heartbreak.
Gib Shanley, Pat Summerall, Curt Gowdy- great announcers. One of the best games I ever saw was Oakland-Miami in the playoffs, Gowdy's call on a Stabler game-winner was priceless. Maybe it's because I was so young, but the game was so much simpler, and you didn't have all the hype. There was no goofy Superbowl halftime show, just highlights. Teams didn't move, and there were no teal uniforms except the Dolphins'.
The Vikings played outside & were actually good. We didn't have the NFC East crammed down our tvs all the time like now (well, the Cowboys were always on). Now, it's all about promoting the individual or the NY teams. It was Sunday, then Monday Night Football, that's it. As much as I love football, I think it's over exposed with a Thursday night game every week now.
