  • I think I actually side with Steve on this one.

If you believe Jesus came back from the dead, or that Jesus is going to save you, I'd argue that you're some sort of fundamentalist. That being said, I'd say that there is another (blurry) line to be drawn between fundamentalism and extremism.

  • So then doesn't that make every Christian a fundamentalist ?

  • To some degree.

  • Then why even have the word fundamentalist

  • So then doesn't that make every Christian a fundamentalist ?

    Not at all woody.

There are plenty of folks who believe in the basics of what they consider to be the teachings of Christ yet are skeptical of some of the wilder stories written thousands of years ago.

For example, virgin birth was attributed toward quite a few larger than life figures throughout history.

I think people could believe in the basic teachings of Christianity and not believe those things. Don't you?

I think in your zeal to be upset with religion in general you lump in the Old Testament teachings with the New Covenant of Jesus Christ founded in the New Testament.

Like I said not a big deal and not worth bickering about.

right now loading prepackaged meals drinking water and ammunition into my backyard Bunker for after Obama win.

Oh yes and cyanide pills if they break through and I'm out of bullets.

I wonder if Stan can put the Browns board on the short wave radio?

  • The basics of the teachings of Christ....

I also believe we should be nice to each and respect our elders. So now I'm a Christian?

  • Then why even have the word fundamentalist

I'd think that some Christians who are described as fundamentalists would be more accurately described as extremists. ie. pat robertson, westboro baptist church

I think you can be a non-fundamentalist Christian if you believe Jesus had good teachings and that's why you want to follow them. There was a logical step in endorsing the teachings of Jesus. I think most American Christians are of this type.

Once you start believing that he is the route to salvation, well, that's a fundamentalist belief. There's no evidence to say so, other than some book. You can't really go out and see that people who don't follow the Bible to a tee are actually getting punished. So you go a step further and believe that they will be punished in the afterlife. As hyperbolic as cal's posts are, I think he fits in this group. There are many of these people.

But then, you can take it a step further. You need concrete evidence of this punishment happening, even though you have no control over it, and so then you wait until a natural disaster, say, a hurricane, floods NYC. Then you blame this on the existence of faggotry. Well. That makes you like Pat Robertson and Bunker. And fuck these people. They're ass-backwards and incapable of critical thought.

  • So all the definitions just got taken down a notch

Basically. I have no problem saying the Republican party has more religious extremists than the Democratic party.

  • Politics is so fucking boring.

    Proof.

    Could be.

  • I also think Motown has more soul than Branson.

  • And yet, have you ever been to either or both?🙄

Don't feel bad, you guys have the Republicans beat in violent criminals by a country mile.

But, even though there are less of them per capita, you guys probably have almost all the Muslim extremists.

    😉

I won't argue with that, but when you look at absolute numbers, and what it's acceptable for each of those groups to say. Well, really only one of them regularly makes the news by opening their mouths. Plus, I thought we were talking about elected officials.

Actually my charge was to find a Democrat or a liberal who was a fundamentalist Christian.

    there are plenty of them.

If you guys want to redefine it to extremism go ahead.

I guess I'd actually define extremism a little differently.

I'd say the Reverend Jeremiah Wright seems extreme to me.

Then again I don't suppose the fellow would be a bad guy if I met him in person.

That goes for just about anybody.

In all honesty I suppose I could sit down and share a cup of coffee with Louis Farrakhan.

And personally I don't believe in any of those 5 requirements to be a fundamentalist Christian.

But the reason I don't consider myself a Christian is not because of those things.

I just don't have the big personal animosity against those who are.

  • See I feel like you guys redefined fundamentalism.

But I guess if we consider fundamentalism extremism now then we are taking a step in the right direction

    Then you define it.
