If The Playoffs Started Today, Week 9
-
If the Playoffs started today, these teams would be in:
AFC
East Patriots 5-3
North Ravens 6-2
South Texans 7-1
West Broncos 5-3
Wildcards: Steelers/Colts both 5-3
NFC
East Giants 6-3
North Bears 7-1
South Falcons 8-0
West 49ers 6-2
Wild Cards: Packers 6-3 and Seahawks 5-4 by virtue of the Seahawks win over the 5-4 Vikings
The other side of the coin: Teams vying for the "First pick in the draft:
1. Chiefs 1-7 (worse conf. record)
2. Jags 1-7
3. Browns 2-7
4. Panthers 2-6
5. Titans 3-6
6. Redskins 3-6
8 teams tied at 3-5

The ONLY "Big" game this coming week, i.e. a game between two teams that would currently be in the playoffs is the Sunday Night affair between the Texans and Bears.
The "top" teams, those that would currently be in the playoffs, could certainly cement their positions this week as except for that one, they all play teams that would be out including:
Pats vs. Bills
Ravens vs. Raiders
Broncos vs. Panthers
Giants vs. Bengals
Falcons vs. Saints
Seahawks vs. Jets
49ers vs. Rams
Steelers vs. Chiefs
As you can see, a lot of haves vs. have nots. The guys in the left column could really solidify the playoff race with wins. I am not sure I care for that. It is usually more fun to have a lot of teams in the playoff race to the end, but that may not happen this year.

Let's look at the contenders in the AFC to see what their remaining schedules look like:
AFC East: Patriots future opponents have a combined 33-26 record.
Dolphins future opponents have a combined 31-35 record.
AFC South: Texans opponents have a combined 35-31 record
Colts opponents have combined 31-34 record
AFC North: Ravens future opponents have a combined 34-29 record
Steelers future opponents have a combined 27-39 record
Bengals opponents have a combined 36-30 record
AFC West: Broncos future opponents have a combined 23-42 record
Chargers future opponents have a combined 31-33 record.
(FYI, Browns future opponents have a 25-32 record: Pitt...2/Cowboys/Raiders/KC/Broncos/Redskins)
The Broncos seem to have the easiest route to the playoffs...19 games below .500....and also seem to be getting better as the season progresses.
The Steelers have the apparent next easiest schedule...12 games below .500.
The apparent hardest remaining schedule belongs to the Pats. Opponents a 7 games over .500, then the Bengals, 6 games over.
Does anyone see anyone else at all in the playoff mix? Jets/Bills/Raiders anyone?
