    Thanks Kosar, appreciate it.

  • From a chicken shit with a student deferment and a high draft number back in the early seventy's, thank you.

    And happy 88th birthday dad.

  • I was never combat - just had B-52's out on the flight line, and had to answer the

phone like war was any second...

    Strategic Air Command.

Thanks to all Veterans. That's a lot of important service...to everybody else,

    and our country.

BTW, go out to dinner tomorrow -

or lunch - some of them will get you lunch or dinner free.

Canton Mike and I have to remember to have proof - although, maybe

the buffet doesn't require it - didn't last year....

  • Yes, Happy Veterans Day to all who served, and who are serving.

  • I'm in the same boat as cal, i performed no heroics in the service and was never called upon to fight but I honor all those who served and especially all those who fought and died. Basilone-grave-arlington.jpgwashington-dc-arlington-national-cemetery-s.jpg

  • Since it's Veteran's Day, I had a pretty amazing chance meeting Saturday. Was walking into the local grocery store, and walking out was a guy (older than me) with a jacket that said "veteran Iwo Jima". "Sir, can I shake your hand?"

Talking with him for a bit, he was not only on Iwo Jima- he was up on Mount Suribachi, and saw the flag raised first hand. I was so stunned, I didn't know what to say. I've seen that film clip at least 100 times, but to meet a guy who was actually there- almost brought me to tears- it was so emotional. Got to meet living history- I'd be hard pressed to think of a parallel.

  • Here's a good compilation of Veteran's Day tweets.

Cheers to you, Diehard. And anyone else I'm forgetting.

Minot ND or Barksdale LA cal?

  • Nah, I was at Wright-Pat in Dayton.

I should have gone to that AFB in upstate NW New York - near the lake.

But, I had it as a second choice because they get snowed in a lot,

and I wanted to drive home and hang out with my friends and family.

Went out to Offuit AFB in Nebraska to visit a girlfriend once.... Strange place. That's SAC hq.

do not know this but- does Wright - Patterson hold nukes too?

  • At the time, most certainly. There was a top secret ? underground bunker out back of the large base...

right next to Bass Lake, and the other lake.

Well, I was fishing out there once, amidst the trees on the bank, and got my lure tangled in some brush,

because I was fishin for bluegill and crappie.

My line was tangled about ten feet past the sign that

clearly said "RESTRICTED AREA - NO UNAUTHORIZED PERSONNEL".

Well, it was my faviorite lure, dammit, so, I just waded along shore in two feet of water, to get my lure,

and right when I got it, I was told in civil terms, that I was in violation of the security

there...by two guys with rifles and a big German Shepard. But, they were fine that I was

there getting my lure, only to tell me to go back the way I came...not on shore.

They smiled, saluted me, and left only after I got back on the other side of the sign...

The next morning, the commander of the squadron called me into his office, door open,

and asked me if I had good fishing out there. I said yeah, and he smiled and said it was

reported to him that a minor breach was made. They knew who I was by my license plate on my car, on the other side of the lake parking lot..

That's some kind of camera/sensor system for back then. He told me to forget it, it was

just sop. And, he told me it was an underground bunker, and it what was in it -

was classified. Too bad, there were some really fine big redears over there. dammit.....

    I never did that again.

  • It still does, as far as I know
