Order of importance: QB > HC > GM

Good thread.
Now if only the Browns could find a Pro Bowl caliber QB...

Another interesting note on Denver and McDaniels:
Bowlen hired McDaniels and relatively quickly. He is not worried about hiring his GM yet. (Shanahan had complete roster control.)
Maybe Lerner is not so crazy after all?

If there is only one ace left you have to grab it! you cant wait in this game for a GM to do the hiring. Im not complaining one bit, for the past 2 years I often wondered what the outcome of games would be if Mangini was our HC and I wont have to wait to long now.
Thank You Mr. Lerner.

Mangini in place is definitely key. I doubt he's spent much time away from looking at film from last year. First thing he needs to know is, what exactly do WE have. It's a homework phase right now for him. In the mean time the GM thing will be dealt with. Ocon's right, just media spin about time wasted. I'd bet a pay-check Mangini's already hard at work.

Stupid Question.
GMs and HCs don't win football games. QBs do. If you have a great QB you can fire the other guys.

No one's disagreeing with that, but they do play a role in surrounding the QB with a support staff (balanced team).
Two guys that come to mind that didn't have a balanced team behind them were Marino and Fouts.
QB's don't win games all by themselves.

Having to have the qb is a no brainer.
But it takes some common sense to figure having the qb doesn't matter unless
you have the FREAKIN OLINE to protect him.
It helps the qb greatly for the oline to dominate the los in the running game, too.
The dirty filthy nasty rotten lying eggsucking ratbirds and squeelers have defenses
that are at the top of the NFL.
And most of the time, their offensive lines get the job done.
All the qb has to do is hand the ball off, and throw it somewhat accurately.
But with the oline being dominated by the defense? The qb sucks, loses, gets beat up.
but if it doesn't happen very often, the team can still have a winning season.
It's the freakin OLINE that lets even marginal qb's play great.
Look at the difference with DumbAss the last two seasons.
When a qb has the confidence in his oline to protect him, he just plays football.
But the offense car don't run with no engine. And that engine is the offensive line.

It's generally been agreed, and Lerner claims his research supports, a head coach is more important than a GM when it comes to winning.
We've also seen Shep's thread on QB play and making the playoffs (it's darn near essential). We've seen the Jets get to 8-3 when Favre was playing pretty well (he wasn't at the top of the league at that point by any stretch) and have seen him single handedly sink the Jets with poor play in the end. When McNabb is on, the Eagles look like world beaters (Prediction: Eagles win the whole thing), and on and on.
As many here have agreed, this "we're waiting too long to hire a GM" and "you shouldn't hire the HC before the GM" is all the Browns media looking for something to write about.
We have Quinn - most important.
We have Mangini - the next most important.
It seems like we have Kokinis, just not now.
Today's PD article frets we're losing precious time and the Browns should actively be in draft mode. Well, Mangini is in the building and this is his last HC shot. I doubt he's pulling a Rip VanWinkle.
We have the top 2 people in place. We're in pretty good shape.

/agree regardless of what many nay sayers think lerner is barking up the right tree this time around..

We also have at least a temporary pro-personnel guy in mccrieght so we arent hurting at all it gives us plenty of time to wait for kokinis or seek out the second right guy for the gm spot if kokinis falls through..

ocon you mean a kid who played 3 total nfl games and preseason is our QB problem solved? OK... if he played at least 8 games I could see possible depending on his performance but to label him as a good qb is ridiculous and premature.

I mean solved as we stand here today.
If Quinn or Mangini isn't the answer, then we'll find out next this year and have to do our annual start-from-scratch routine.
I agree, there seems to be not many on this team who are officially the long term answer.

You do realize the Browns were 8th in the NFL in terms of sacks given up? Even with a month of Dorsey/Gradkowski lining up behind center. We gave up only 24 sacks, it looked worse than it was because of Jamal Lewis celebrating his 100th birthday and Braylon losing his hands in a poker game, it allowed defences to pin their ears back and rush the passer.

Bowlen also hired Nolan as their DC and announced McDaniel and Nolan at the same time. This kid doesn't even get to hire his own staff.

T.J. McCreight is something of a draftnick dude and the Browns think very highly of him. Looks more and more like he'll stay around, especially with Kokinis' perceived lack of college scouting experience. It's not out of the realm of imagination that McCreight gets the GM job.
Kokinis is a Pro Personnel guy so his immediate importance is minimal. McCreight is the college player and draft man. The scouting staff is in place and actually McCreight is acting GM.
