Browns/redskins Trivia

Bonus: not entirely sure but skins owner was the only one who voted against the future Dallas owner to get a franchise. Apparently the disgruntled band leader or something had the rights to hail to the redskins which he sold to the Dallas owner to use as leverage to buy the skins owner's vote.
That should be close enough for gov't work. As I don't really follow the redskins at all I have no clue about the rest.

OK, well, they may have been the first team to do several other things as well....but I was wrong, they were not the first to not score an offensive TD. The Dolphins hold that honor in SB 6 (when can we stop using Roman numerals) where they lost 24-3 to the Cowboys.

Q#4. What 2 former Redskins First round draft choices played for the Browns?
Q#5 How many years at one point did the Redskins go without having a first round draft choice/
Q#6. At what college did the Redskins hold their training camp from 1946-1962....a college that was attended by a White House occupant and a Vice Presidential candidate?
Q#11. What action was taken to finally force George Preston Marshall to integrate the Redskins?

Rypien was one. And I would have to check on Eddie Brown...and I have done so, and you are correct. Very good. He is not a name I had....so make that a total of 6 former Browns who made the Pro Bowl as Redskins.
There is one more that I know of....and old name.....which seems to keep popping up in these quizzes at the oddest places, including here.
Q#4. What 2 former Redskins First round draft choices played for the Browns?
Kenard Lang
That is a check

NO
Q#11. What action was taken to finally force George Preston Marshall to integrate the Redskins?
I think Bobby Kennedy had something to do with it.
Yes, I believe he did...at least the Kennedy administration did.

Here is this weeks trivia appertaining to the Browns next opponent:
Since nearly every question has been answered I will go ahead and give the answers:
1. What is the all time regular season head to head record Browns vs. Redskins?
Browns lead 33-10-1
2. What is the Redskins all time postseason record vs. Cleveland teams?
Cleveland leads 1-0.....but the Cleveland team was the Rams who beat the Skins 15-14 in that 1945 NFL title game. The Browns and Redskins never met in the postseason.
3. Name the 5 players that also at some point played for the Browns that have made the Pro Bowl as a member of the Washington Redskins.
OK, so we now know it has been at least 6:
Bobby Mitchell
Ernest Byner
Mark Rypien
Mark Mosely
Eddie Brown and
Sam Baker.....who played for (kicked for) just about everybody and made the Pro Bowl with all of them.
4. What 2 Redskins first round draft choices played at some point with the Cleveland Browns?
Kenard Lang is one, and the other that I include is Ernie Davis....who, of course, only played in the one preseason game with the Browns.
5. During a certain era of their history the Redskins became known as the "Over the Hill Gang" because they would trade their high draft picks for veterans. How many years in this era did the Redskins go without ever selecting in the first round of the NFL draft?
They went 11 straight years from 1969-1980 without ever making a pick in the first round. (finally, in 1981 they kept their pick and drafted HOF WR Art Monk. Good move) In many of these years they didn't have above a 4th round pick. In one year their highest draft pick was an 8th rounder....when they had 8 rounds.
6. From 1946 to 1962 the Washington Redskins held their training camp at a college attended by a future occupant of the most famous address in that city....and which school was also the alma mater of a Vice Presidential Candidate (who didn't make it) that played in the NFL. What was the school and who were the two men involved here that went there?
The President is Barack Obama, the VP candidate was Jack Kemp. Both attended Occidental College in Los Angeles which is where the Skins had their training camp for those 17 years. Why they went all the way to the west coast, I don't know. But they did.
(Obama transferred to Columbia. Kemp graduated from Occidental)
7. In 1963 the Redskins moved from the above school and from then til 1994 they trained at the school that was attended by one of the founding fathers of the National Football League. Where was this school?
Carlisle Pa. where Jim Thorpe attended school.
8. What were the Washington Redskins originally named?
The Boston Braves....since they played in the Boston Braves stadium they adopted that name, but only had it for like 1 year til Marshall changed it to Redskins.
9. Vince Lombardi was not the only ex-Packers coach to be the HC of the Redskins. What other former Packer coach went on to coach the Skins?
Curly Lambeau...of Lambeau Field fame also coached the Redskins.
10. Who did Vince Lombardi replace as the HC of the Redskins?
Otto Graham
11. The Redskins, true to the racist nature of their owner George Preston Marshall, were the last NFL team to integrate. How finally did this integration come about....against the will of Marshall.
The Kennedy Administration notified the Redskins that they would be evicted from using DC Stadium (later renamed Robert Kennedy Stadium) which was owned by the US Department of the Interior unless the Redskins integrated. This happened in 1962.
12. Besides the Redskins, what other major professional sports team did Jack Kent Cooke own at one point?
The Los Angeles Lakers.
Bonus: Supposedly, the Redskins and Cowboys is one of the greatest rivalries in the NFL.
How is it that an issue dealing with the Washington Redskins fight song "Hail to the Redskins" led directly to the creation of the Dallas Cowboys franchise?
Background to this answer: In 1959 Clint Murchison entered into a deal to buy the Redskins from George Preston Marshall. Marshall began to make demands for a bunch of new changes to the agreement and eventually backed out, which infuriated Murchison. At about the same time, Marshall was pushing his weight around with a guy name Barnee Breeskin who owned the rights to the "Hail to the Redskins" song. Breeskin sold the rights to the song to Clint Murchison, believing that he would become the new Redskins owner...and unlike Marshall, Murchison was generous to him.
Since his deal with the Redskins fell through...and with the AFL threat looming...and with the rest of the NFL owners liking Murchison even if Marshall didn't....the NFL went into negotiations to expand into Dallas, Murchison's home town. But unanimous consent of the existing owners was required for the approval of any expansion...including the city and ownership thereof. Because of the failed deal to buy the Redskins Marshall had threatened to veto the Dallas Cowboy expansion....but then Murchison pulled the "Hail to the Redskins" ownership out of his hip pocket and said if you don't have expansion you can no longer use this song. A basic deal was reached that in exchange for Marshall's vote in favor of expansion to Dallas with Murshison as owner that Murchison would then transfer ownership of the fight song over to Marshall and the Redskins.
So, in reality, the Redskins fight song led to the creation of the Cowboys. Without that deal Dallas would have had no expansion team. Dallas would have been left to the AFL and Lamar Hunt's Dallas Texans. You would probably today have no Dallas Cowboys, no Kansas City Chiefs, and no Houston Texans. The NFL would have expanded to Minnesota and somewhere else...maybe Miami, or who knows.
Butterfly effect all over the rights to a fight song.

I knew about Ernie Davis, but I didn't think he actually "played" for the Browns, you got me on that preseason game.
When drafted by the Redskins, Ernie famously said "I won't play for that S.O.B." meaning the racist Marshall. Marshall traded him to Modell for Bobby Mitchell, who broke the color barrier for the Redskins and went on to the Hall.
There is a good movie about Ernie, "The Express".
Speaking of great running backs, movies and refusing to play for dickheads ... Bo Jackson 30 for 30 was on last night (I didn't catch it earlier)and it touched on how Bo refused to play for Hugh Culverhouse and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Apparently the Bucs took Jackson on a trip in a private plane which they said was cleared by the NCAA. This cost him his college eligibility for the rest of his senior year of baseball. They also gave Jackson an ultimatum to choose baseball or football. Bo said "No".
Had the Buccaneers correctly handled Bo and Steve Young they could have had a very interesting team there...
By the way, I almost guessed "Occidental" because I knew Obama attended there, but I couldn't figure out why a team from Washington would go out out to California to train for football...

Yes, I also wonder why those players hated the thought of going to TB. After all, the stigma of the "lousy" Buccaneers should have been shed when they made the NFC title game in 1979 with Doug Williams at QB.

Apparently, any number of teams did that.
