Norv Turner Officially Named Oc

The Browns Board

  • There isn't a person in the new Browns that is tied to Weeden, much less McCoy. There is no way they are going to throw away their first year to see if a QB that another regime drafted will sink or swim. They have different plans in mind, bank on it.

  • People really just can't envision it because they keep comparing Weeden's okayness to the success of the other rookies, he will excel next year with Chud and Turner

  • HOW can folks continually judge Weeden when, in his ROOKIE year, he had little (if any) coaching, inexperienced receivers, & lousy play design, poor play calling/decision making, & far too rigid an offensive strategy?

In 2013, Weeden & our other QBs will FINALLY have expert & credible coaching. This will not only GREATLY aid in their development, it will lend credence to their evaluations of talent.

I honestly think that Weeden was mandated to play "outside" his own comfort/talent level, where other rookie QBs were playing in offenses that were designed to take advantage of THEIR individual comfort/talent levels. THIS year, Weeden will be on more of a "level playing field" with the others, so why not wait & see what happens.

I'm extremely excited! LOVE the Chud/Norv hires, the goal of playing aggressively, & the stated flexibility.

like mike pagano did a lot of coaching to andrew luck from his death bed?

don't hate me for saying this . pleez i want everyone that we've invested in to do good/great/fantastalistic!!!

BUT you either got it or you don't. it's none of these guys first day on the football field. stand up and be a play-maker or go bag groceries at stop and shop.

i'd rather have a phillip rivers anyday, who after getting hit in the back will stand up and call the defender out (harrison) and keep yelling at him all game than some guy that shakes his hand in a loss.

I agree with you i think Bw3 will excel in the new offense that would complement his strengths of throwing a rocket ball.

  • Weeden gets one more year unless by some weird miracle Geno Smith falls to us at 6.

Weird miracle?? That's what you'd call that...

That only makes sense if he would be trade bait for us to trade down.

Geno Smith <<<< R. Wilson (who IMHO) <<<< B. Weeden in QB skills

Like everybody else said, he should be much better with Chud and Norv.

  • They are making it sound like Lombardi is a done deal right now and I don't think he's a big Weeden fan.

I think it's 50/50 at best that Weeden is our starter next season, no to Geno Smith.

Agreed. What did Peyton Manning do his first year. 3 wins. 26 TD and 28 INT's. Come on man.

  • The thing with Weeden is it's just a dumb investment.

30 year old QB with 1 year experience.

In a few seasons, (hopefully he's still around) Weeden will start to decline physically and won't have a decade of experience to rely on.

Why should he say anything? Oh yeah....the fans just gotta hear something!

Its all bout fans needing something to talk about. Nothing more. Why dont you pull up some vids where new HCs start talking about personnel.

"Usually" is a term used when one is framing a statement on no real facts.

It's going to be a fun year to watch some rookie head coaches.

I produced a graph in which I showed that only 3 QBs in Browns history started for more than 5 years for this team: OG, Sipe, Kosar, and for Kosar it was only about 6 years.

So, the fact that Weeden may only be able to "produce" for another 5 years, is quite alright with me. I will take those 5 years if they are quality 5 years.

And neither you, I, or anyone else on here or on the Browns or Weeden himself knows what will happen.

    So what's your point?

All of our former QB's you mentioned were starting in their mid to early 20's and retired in their mid to early 30's.

So while they were old men in NFL terms they were battle tested with years of NFL experience to fall back on.

When Weeden hits his "NFL prime" he'll be ready to retire, and won't have the luxury of a decades experience playing in the NFL.

Do I want 5 solid years from Weeden? Absolutely - but that's still a long shot, and of course ideally you want a guy to play 10-15 years.

It seems to me you are trying to argue that having a QB start for five years is just as good as having a QB start for 10 or even 15 years.

My point is that if we get 5 years out of the guy...then we should be happy. Many, many, many QBs play into their late 30s. If BW3 lasts until he is 35, then I would say we have a QB on our hands...instead of these one year and done dudes.

All of our former QB's you mentioned were starting in their mid to early 20's and retired in their mid to early 30's.

So? Who cares how old they are/were. The question is: did they/will they produce while they are on the job.

So while they were old men in NFL terms they were battle tested with years of NFL experience to fall back on.

When Weeden hits his "NFL prime" he'll be ready to retire, and won't have the luxury of a decades experience playing in the NFL.

Weeden's "prime time" is next year and the year after that. BK had his best years in his 2d and 3rd year in the league. The same with Dan Marino.

Do I want 5 solid years from Weeden? Absolutely - but that's still a long shot, and of course ideally you want a guy to play 10-15 years.

Well, it was a long shot if the young Colt McCoy would succeed. It was a longshot if the young Brady Quinn and Derek Anderson succeeded.

The opinion of many of people here is that these guys are already washed up, and how old were they when they washed out? 24/25?

It seems to me you are trying to argue that having a QB start for five years is just as good as having a QB start for 10 or even 15 years.

I am saying that in the history of the NFL...and the Browns we have only had like 3 guys last 5 years....so, yes, I AM saying that having a QB start for 5 years is good...

but, sure, if you could insure me that we could get a QB that would have a 10 plus year successful career, I am all for that. But, other than OG we have never had that...so I will take the 5 years....and maybe hope that a BW3 can play til he is 38 like Peyton Manning and others.

  • In the history of the Cleveland Browns these are the number of years each QB served as the primary starting QB of a particular season:

    Otto Graham: 10

    Brian Sipe: 8

    Bernie Kosar: 7

    Frank Ryan : 6

    Milt Plum: 4

    Bill Nelsen: 4

    Mike Phipps: 4

    Tim Couch: 4

    Vinny Testaverde: 3

    Tommy O'Connell: 2

    Derek Anderson: 2

    Colt McCoy: 2

    Paul McDonald: 1

    Mike Tomscak: 1

    Kelly Holcomb: 1

    Jeff Gardia: 1

    Trent Dilfer: 1

    Charlie Frye: 1

    Brady Quinn: 1

    Brandon Weede3n: 1

Notice of all those one year wonder all but a couple have been post 1999, the Lerner years.

So, I think we can all agree on this: we need a coach and a QB that will be around for a while.

  • No Quarterback over the age of 30 with less than 5 years of experience has ever won the Superbowl.

  • Likewise, here are the tenures of the various coaches in Browns history:

    Paul Brown: 17

    Blanton Collier: 8

    Sam Rutigliano: 6

    Marty Schottenheimer: 5

    Bill Belichick: 5

    Nick Skorich: 4

    Butch Davis: 4

    Romeo Crennell: 4

    Forrest Gregg: 3

    Bud Carson: 2

    Chris Palmer: 2

    Eric Mangini: 2

    Pat Shurmur: 2

(I have not included interim coaches like Dick Modzewlewski/Jim Shofner/Terry Robiskie who each HCed for a few games)

Again, notice of those serving 4 years or less, all but a couple were post 1999.

  • No Quarterback over the age of 30 with less than 5 years of experience has ever won the Superbowl.

Very few QBs over the age of 30 have ever had less than 5 years experience, so that is no big thing.

  • Obviously you want continuity at HC and QB, but I don't want continuity just for the sake of having it.

  • No Quarterback over the age of 30 with less than 5 years of experience has ever won the Superbowl.

Well that makes perfect sense, because most QBs are in their early 20's when the enter league. In fact, just about every one of them.

No player wearing a Cleveland Browns uniform has ever played in a Super Bowl. Regardless of position, age or experience.

    Let's work on that one.
