Super Bowl Trivia, Round One

The Browns Board

  • Here is some Super Bowl Trivia. I will probably have a couple of more sets by the time this two week drudgery waiting for it to happen runs.:

    1. San Francisco now has the opportunity to have that cities teams win 2 consecutive championships. The Giants won the World Series in October, and the 49ers are up for a Super Bowl in. When is the last time a city had two teams win Championships consecutively in the 4 major sports? (for this purpose you can count the NBA/NHL together as they hold the finals at about the same time.)

    2. Who were the last 2 non-quarterbacks to win the Super Bowl MVP?

    3. What team has the best point differential in all Super Bowls they have been involved in?

    4. What team has the worst point differential in all Super Bowls they have been involved in?

    5. Three teams have a .500 record in the Super Bowls they have played in. Name the three teams.

    6. Joe Flacco will be the third Super Bowl starting QB whose last name begins with an F. Name the other 2.

    7. Colin Kaepernik will be the 4th Super Bowl starting QB whose last name begins with a K. Name the other 3.

    8. Joe Montana has the best passer rating in a career for all starting Super Bowl QBs who have started more than 1 game. Who is second?

    9. What team was the very first winner of "The Vince Lombardi Trophy"?

    10. Only 3 stadiums have ever hosted the Super Bowl that were NOT the home field of an NFL team. Name all three of those stadiums.

    11. Three Stadiums who were awarded the hosting of the Super Bowl game had that privilege revoked, for various reasons. Name those 3 stadia (and why they had the game pulled if you can)

    12. The 1990s Bills lost 3 straight Super Bowls but returned to the Super Bowl the following year. Other than them, only 4 Super Bowl losing teams ever returned to the Super Bowl.

Name the teams (and approximate year), and the result when they returned.

    13. Though each winning Super Bowl team has the right to choose who makes their Super Bowl rings, the great majority have chosen one company to make those rings. Name that company.

All have been answered but a couple of partial questions, so here are the Final Answers:

The 2008 Steelers won the Super Bowl (in Feb. 2009), followed immediately by the 2009 Penguins taking the Stanley Cup.

    2. Who were the last 2 non-quarterbacks to win the Super Bowl MVP?

Both Peetown WRs: Santonio Holmes in 2008 and Hines Ward in 2005

    3. What team has the best point differential in all Super Bowls they have been involved in?

The 49ers are a +99 points in the 5-0 Super Bowl record. (followed by Cowboys at +89 then Packers at +57)

    4. What team has the worst point differential in all Super Bowls they have been involved in?

The Broncos are minus 91 points in the 2-4 Super Bowl record. next is Bills a -66, Vikings at -61, Pats at -48

    5. Three teams have a .500 record in the Super Bowls they have played in. Name the three teams.

Colts are 2-2. Bears and Chiefs are 1-1.

(some mentioned Pats...who are 3-4, and Raiders who are 3-2)

    6. Joe Flacco will be the third Super Bowl starting QB whose last name begins with an F. Name the other 2.

    Favre and Ferragamo

    7. Colin Kaepernik will be the 4th Super Bowl starting QB whose last name begins with a K. Name the other 3.

    Kilmer, Kapp, and Kelly

    8. Joe Montana has the best passer rating in a career for all starting Super Bowl QBs who have started more than 1 game. Who is second?

A surprise that no one got: Jim Plunkett

    9. What team was the very first winner of "The Vince Lombardi Trophy"?

1970 Baltimore Colts, SBV winners. Vince Lombardi had died earlier in September and the league quickly named the trophy in his honor.

    10. Only 3 stadiums have ever hosted the Super Bowl that were NOT the home field of an NFL team. Name all three of those stadiums.

The Rose Bowl several times (but only when there was a team in LA...not since), Stanford Stadium (deemed much larger than Candlestick), and Houston's Rice Stadium, deemed more amenable than the Astrodome.

    11. Three Stadiums who were awarded the hosting of the Super Bowl game had that privilege revoked, for various reasons. Name those 3 stadia (and why they had the game pulled if you can)

    A. The 1990 Super Bowl was removed from Sun Devil Stadium in Tempe because of Arizona's refusal to recognize Martin Luther King Day as a national holiday.

    B. The 2015 Super Bowl has been taken away from Arrowhead Stadium in KC because of the failure to pass a couple of sales tax measures that I believe would have partially gone for stadium improvements. (Ironically, that Super Bowl has since been awarded to Arizona and the University of Phoenix stadium)

    C. The 2010 Super Bowl was awarded to the New York West Side stadium. It was taken away because, well, obviously, that stadium was never built. When the award or the 2012 Olympics went to London instead of NYC plans for the West Side Stadium were scrapped. Of course next year the NYC area does get the SB.

    12. The 1990s Bills lost 3 straight Super Bowls but returned to the Super Bowl the following year. Other than them, only 4 Super Bowl losing teams ever returned to the Super Bowl.

Name the teams (and approximate year), and the result when they returned.

The 1970 Cowboys returned and won in 1971. The 1971 Dolphins returned and won in 1972. The 1973 Vikings returned and lost in 1974. The 1986 Broncos returned and lost in 1987...and of course those Bills teams lost every time they got there.

Those 71 Cowboys and 72 Dolphins are still the only two SB losers to ever come back and win the next year. Even this year the Pats blew it in their attempt to be the first SB loser in 40 years to come back and win.

    13. Though each winning Super Bowl team has the right to choose who makes their Super Bowl rings, the great majority have chosen one company to make those rings. Name that company.

    Josten's is the company
