Report: Jets May Trade Darrelle Revis

The Browns Board

  • NEW YORK (CBSMiami) – The Miami Marlins have defined dysfunctional franchise in baseball for years, but in the NFL the team that is putting the fun in dysfunction lately is the New York Jets.

The Jets have hit the headlines in all of the New York newspapers Thursday after team owner Woody Johnson said he wants to “entertain the possibility” trading the team’s best player, cornerback Darrelle Revis. The Pro Bowl cornerback is rehabbing from a torn anterior cruciate ligament suffered in Miami in a game against the Dolphins.

Head coach Rex Ryan, who could be in a lame duck season, has built his entire defense around Revis and fellow cornerback Antonio Cromartie. Revis has been described by multiple coaches as the best cornerback in pro football for several years.

Revis, 27, is set for unrestricted free agency after next season and the Jets may be ready to move him to get something rather than losing him for nothing. The problem for the Jets with Revis is no one knows how close he will be to the player he was when he returns from his torn ACL.

While Adrian Peterson of the Vikings made a miraculous recovery from his torn ACL and led the league in rushing, no one can predict what Revis’ recovery will look like. That will negatively impact his trade value amongst fellow general managers.

Revis carries a salary cap cost of $9 million this season and will carry significant cap hits if he is traded. However, the Jets have little room to wiggle with the salary cap.

The Jets are expected to be upwards of $27 million over the salary cap and have seven players who each count more than $10 million against the cap. Quarterback Mark Sanchez is the second-highest paid on the team with a cap cost of $12.853 million.

Still, Jets coach Rex Ryan has said he doesn’t want to trade Revis and that leaves new general manager John Idzik in an awkward position of either placating his owner or his coach. Given the state of the Jets, what Woody wants, Woody will more than likely get.

  • Ya, I heard this on the radio today ... Ya I would do a trade and sign.

I don't think we have a second rounder this year though, and that's probably what it would take.

    Zombo

  • Rubin and a 3rd! His contract prohibits him being tagged so hed have to sign an extension first though.

  • He wants a gozillion dollars and is a major head case, despite his immense talent.

I might actually prefer if the Browns take a Milliner with their first pick than pick up Revis.

Also, he is coming off reconstructive knee surgery. Is he really going to be the same shut down corner he was before...which requires the ultimate in speed burst and cutting ability?

Who knows? Not even he or his doctors.

  • Value doesn't equal the price.

Even the best shutdown corner gives up passes. The difference in skill between an elite corner and a good corner isn't as much as as the difference in price.

We'd be better off signing a second tier guy and saving a couple million a year to allocate somewhere else.

Well I tend to disagree with that. What seems to be the trend in the NFL is two things in terms of passing: elite WR's get to push off like crazy, and elite CB's get to be physical as shit with no flags thrown against them. Say what you will, but guys like Richard Sherman and Revis get away with stuff that a "good" CB would get flagged for. I do agree with you though that Revis' asking price is going to be 15-16 mil a year and he won't play if he doesn't get close as he's clearly shown. It's hard to say if it's worth throwing that much money around, but Revis and Haden would be a dangerously good tandem.

  • Dee Milner is looking real nice opposite Haden as far as two great corners for years is concerned. As bad as we need a pass rusher we also desperately need another corner and I don't think Revis is worth it.

  • He would actually come cheap because he yet has to be cleared from a serious knee injury. There would have to be a clause, with any team that wanted to trade for him, where the trade would become void if he didn't pass his physical by a certain point. This would also be why he would come for a cheaper price. Will want too much money, hasn't performed at his notoriously high level, and possible future health concerns.

  • as good as he is (when healthy) the guy is a pain in the azz. didn't play 95% of the games last year and will probably ask for manning money.

his infamous holdout was daily fodder for NY media and a huge distraction (like they don't have enough) for the jets that year.

fuck him. build through the draft.

Well, that is perfectly logical....but you discount the fact that in his mind he will be every bit the player he was before...and will want that big payday....and will be a POS about getting paid.

  • Millner should be it. Move Sheldon to Safety. Fill two needs with one draft pick. Say know 2 Revis. Too many question marks.

  • sorry. NO

  • Don't know if Sheldon can make the hits at safety he seems brittle at times

  • No thanks, have to pay him 15-16 mill a year and then he will hold out again in a year or two!!

  • Lets be honest they want at least a first for him, and honestly he is first round talent.

But the jets are well over in salary cap, and done with sanchez at qb.

But i have a gut feeling that revis is not the rehaber that AP or jamal charles was and he wont be 100% next year.

  • NO. Gip is right - better to up and draft Milliner.

The previous Browns coaches would have thought to trade for a Revis,

not realizing he may be a cap casualty, depending on an extended rehab.

Now, if Revis is cut, and becomes a FA, that's different.

  • Would I like Revis? Yes, him and Haden would be a nice tandem. Would I like the price it would take to get Revis? Absolutely not.

  • Dont really wanna trade a 1st rounder on another 28 year old. Definitely not one coming off a major injury. I would love to be able to get Revis, dont get me wrong but it will take at least a 1st for him I'm sure.

  • Allotting that much cap space to the corner position is ridiculous. As is drafting Milliner.

Add an impact player at every positional grouping first, then worry about adding talented depth. A playmaking LB and a playmaking CB will take us a lot further than 2 playmaking CBs and no LB.

Defense is still reactionary by definition. We could have 2 All-Pro corners, an All-Pro FS and an All-Pro SS and still lose because any OC worth his salt would realize our weakness was in the run game.

There are three phases of defense: defending the run, defending the pass and pressuring the QB. Your goal is to be balanced in all three aspects, thereby creating no glaring weakness for OC's to exploit. Right now, the talent level of our pass defense is head and shoulders above the other two phases solely because of Joe Haden. Let's work adding any sort of talent in the pass rush and shoring up the run defense before we go creating an All-Star lineup at corner.

  • ^yes.
