The Yearly Calfox's Stupid, Way Too Early Browns Mock Draft

The Browns Board
22 10 1.4k
  • 1st Round. Ezekiel Ansah, DE/OLB

Sure, I want the Browns to trade down again. But, the bait really isn't there that much.

And no, the Browns won't draft a qb this year, because none are all that spectacular to

make you want to change from what the Browns have right now.

Except for the medical concerns, it would be

Dion Jordan or Jarvis Jones. but Ansah is 6'5" and 260 lbs of very, very quick on his feet qb getter. He's a freak

athletically, and not as raw as Jordan. He runs the forty faster than Jarvis Jones. His upside is all pro, to me. He could go at DE in the 3-4 with another twenty lbs,

    or OLB.

    And Dion Jordan is raw.

Ansah IS that athletic. Ansah is incredibly athletic, long arms, quick feet, flexible with excellent balance. You would hear his name a good bit his rookie year.

A whole lot in the second year. Whatcha gonna do, when Sheard, Taylor/Huges and Ansah/Winn are after you?

    Be very afraid. That's what.

    2nd Round

Okay, there isn't one. I'm just listing this because I want them to trade down and get a second pick back.

Because this is where they would pick a lb for the 3-4.

    3rd Round Blidi Wren-Wilson.CB

The Browns need a cb who can cover man and zone whatever. Not afraid of buttkicking on run support.

At 6' 1", the Browns need a fluid, smart, instinctive taller cb on the flip side from Haden. Even

if he sits behind Brown for a while, he will be able to step in. If Brown gets hurt again, well,

    draft this kid.

    4th Round Garrett Gilkey, OG. 6'6", 315.

Okay, my drafts are dumb enough I'll catch hell anyways, but this pick is because this kid

is worth it, and with Pinkston maybe gone for good...

Because, he will surprise at the combine, and won't be there in the fifth round, I think.

He is that good, and the amazing thing is, he didn't go to a Div 1 school. He went to Chadron State, I think it was.

He's a buttkicking, athletic, quick footed blocking machine. He LOVES the battles in the trenches.

You want a powerful guy to move dl's out of the way, and get to the next guy? It's Gilkey. He will be a steal in the 4th.

Besides, drafting olinemen anywhere is a cynch to get Rich to show up and complain. @@

    5th Round Joseph Fauria TE. 6'7" 257.

Because he can block, and would be a huge target in the red zone.

Catches the ball well, in traffic, but not all that fast.

There are better TE's, but they went in the first four rounds. I think waiting to the fifth for Gilkey would be

a mistake. He may not even be there in the fourth after the combine results...

    6th Round

Beats me. Too early before combine even, to find some small school lb steal of the draft. eh....

  • Why not Tyrann Mathieu? Considering his off the field issues are cleared.

  • When I read up about him - he is terrific...on the field.

Except his "horrid backpedal" will make him look like crap in the pros.

And, even if he does turn his life around permanently, he's permanently a short guy.

So, all in all, I ruled him out - the Browns can't take chances with their current need to hit

    on their draft picks.

  • Whoever we pick at six won't be asked to play DE. A 3-4 DE is essentially a 4-3 interior lineman and his only duty is to occupy blockers. We have enough of those on the roster.

Whoever we pick at six will be the purest pass rusher available. We need someone to excel at that aspect while working on the others nuances of his game. We have enough "balanced" talent in our current LB corps to be able to field an Aldon Smith like player- someone who pins his ears back and flies at the QB.

Whether that's Jones, Ansah, Jordan or someone else...that remains to be seen.

  • I understood that Fauria is projected quite a bit higher than the 5th round...isn't he?

  • I'd be happy with any 3 of these guys at 6.

Hopefully you are right Cal, I remember you hitting our 2nd rounder last year predicting Schwartz, and you were also one of the few people touting Doug Martin as well.

  • Well, Lumbergh - you may very well be correct. But Jordan has injury concerns, and what I've read, his production isn't as good as some of the others in the draft.

Now why that is, beats me - could be the scheme, double teaming, competition I don't know.

Here's some good stuff on him, and Ansah.

Note that Ansah was #1 in both categories mentioned below, so, I just went with Ansah.

    The Bad

Sometimes the numbers don't lie. And these numbers are somewhat concerning when you consider the Browns may have their eye on him at #6. According to John Pollard, the GM at STATS, the world's leading sports information and technology company, Dion Jordan ranks last among the top prospects in production in these areas:

    @JPSTATS: Top Prospect DEs when measuring Sacks/Snap: 1) Ansah 2) Okafor 3) Werner 4) Moore 5) Jordan

@JPSTATS: Studying DEs, sample group of top prospects came out this way when measuring Pressures/Snap:1) Ansah 2) Mingo 3) Okafor 4) Werner 5) Jordan

01/24/13 - BYU's Ezekiel Ansah drawing comparisons to Jason Pierre-Paul...In 2010, Ansah walked on to the BYU track team and ran a personal-best of 21.9 seconds in the 200 meters. Upon the urgings of a Cougars' assistant track coach, Ansah took up football. “It was hard but my teammates and coaches helped me through it,” Ansah said.

Ansah models his game after Pierre-Paul, the Giants defensive end, who also entered the league with little seasoning. As a zone blitzer, Ansah compares himself favorably with Clay Matthews. Lions coach Jim Schwartz, the South coach at the Senior Bowl, says Ansah isn't as raw as people think. “Everybody keeps saying that he's raw but I keep seeing things like instincts and knocking down passes that doesn't look raw to me,” Schwartz said. “It looks like he has a really good feel for the game.” - Matt Rybaltowski, CBSSports.com

01/24/13 - BYU's Ezekiel Ansah drawing comparisons to Jason Pierre-Paul...Arguably the top pass rusher at this week's Senior Bowl has only spent a few years in the United States and didn't even play competitive football before 2010. But at 6-6, 270 pounds, former BYU linebacker Ezekiel Ansah possesses the explosiveness and closing speed that can't be coached. Inevitably, the comparisons between Ansah and Jason Pierre-Paul are going to swell over the next few months.

Ansah, a native of Accra, Ghana, described his nation's 2-1 Round-of-16 win over the United States in the 2010 FIFA World Cup as “the best moment of his life.” Shortly after arriving in Provo, Ansah watched the victory with a large contingent of Ghanaian students in Utah. Ansah excelled on the pitch in his homeland and credits soccer for helping him with the footwork needed to rush at a stand-up position as a 3-4 outside linebacker. - Matt Rybaltowski, CBSSports.com

12/16/12 - 2012 FBS ALL-INDEPENDENT FIRST TEAM: DL Ezekiel Ansah (Sr.), BYU, has been selected First Team All-Independent for the 2012 college football season by members of a nationwide media panel, which includes equal representation from each of the independent institutions’ coverage markets. The senior from Ghana has emerged as a top defender on BYU's third-ranked defense, allowing 266.3 yards per game. Ansah has 57 tackles and is second on the team with 13.0 tackles for loss. He adds 4.5 sacks, eight pass breakups and six quarterback hurries. - BYU football

11/21/12 - 2012 BURLSWORTH TROPHY SEMIFINALIST (TOP COLLEGE FOOTBALL WALK-ON): Ezekial Ansah, Sr., DL, BYU...BYU defensive lineman Ezekiel Ansah has been named a semifinalist for the 2012 Burlsworth Trophy, honoring the nation's top player who began his career as a walk-on. A walk-on is defined as a player who began his first season of participation with a Division-I (FBS) football program without financial aid of any kind from his university’s athletic department. Ansah, a senior, began his career in football three years ago, having never played the game in his life growing up in Accra, Ghana.

Originally a track athlete with incredible size and speed, Ansah was introduced to football and has quickly picked up the game. From learning how to put his football pads on three years ago to now a starter at defensive end on the No. 3 defense in the nation, Ansah's road from walk-on to starter is truly unique. The 6-foot-6, 270 pounder is currently fourth on the team in tackles with 53 and has 12.0 tackles for loss and 4.0 sacks, both good for second-best on the team. His 12.0 tackles for loss are tied for 44th nationally. - BYU football

11/13/12 - Week 11 Rewind: BYU, Utah Pass-rushers Give Beehive State Its Sting...It is precisely this position and scheme versatility that has made BYU's Ezekiel "Ziggy" Ansah the hottest senior prospect in the country. The 6-6, 270 pound native of Ghana originally came to BYU on a track scholarship and only began playing in football in 2010. Having been shuffled between defensive end and linebacker the past two years, Ansah entered his senior season with just 10 combined tackles. Demonstrating much greater awareness and strength this season, however, Ansah has been terrific, standing out in high profile games against Boise State, Notre Dame and Georgia Tech in recent weeks and reportedly earning an invitation to the Senior Bowl. It was easy to see what Phil Savage and the Senior Bowl scouts saw in Ansah, who dominated Idaho Saturday night, playing both with his hand in the ground as a defensive end and as a stand-up rusher. - Rob

  • I understood that Fauria is projected quite a bit higher than the 5th round...isn't he? Gipper

    *************************************************

Yep - I have a bad cold, and didn't read up on him as much. Some predict 3rd round, some 4th. Apparently

he's quicker than I give him credit for, so he may very well go in the last half of the 3rd.

It's fun trying to figure it all out. A lot of things change after the combine...

    And frustrating.... !

  • What excites me about this draft is the fact there's several guys in our most glaring position of need that will be available at 6. No need to move up or down either, stay right at 6. At this point, I would say Jordan is the overall better player but damn Ansah looks like he's a freak of a football player.

  • I'd be happy with any 3 of these guys at 6.

Hopefully you are right Cal, I remember you hitting our 2nd rounder last year predicting Schwartz, and you were also one of the few people touting Doug Martin as well.

    Thanks !

    My NFL scouting philosophy:

"blind squirrel still finds hickory nuts....."

  • Man, I picked a terrific OG to nab in my stupid mock draft......

Gilkey was bullied as a freshman.......

I'd draft him in a New York second.

  • How about this............. We draft 4 players that start for the Browns for 7 years.

Yes thats probably true since Ansah has played only 3 yrs of football. But I think Ansah has HUGE upside because I don't think he even know what he can do yet. I would love Ansah at 6.

"Huge upside" just means he hasn't done shit. The best 2 players on BYU's defense last year were Kyle Van Noy and Brandon Ogletree, not Ansah. Don't take projects at the top of the draft.

Ogletree has serious character/off the field issues. He will NOT be drafted by the Browns. Take it to the bank.

And Kyle Van Noy is not entering the draft. He's staying for his senior year.

and Ansah is impressing many, many people. Watch him at the combine.

Brandon Ogletree from BYU is a different guy than the Ogletree from Georgia. I think Brandon Ogletree would be a good undrafted FA to sign for somebody.

  • oops. My bad.... You'd think "Ogletree" would only occur once in the draft...@@

  • I'd rather have Marquess Wilson from Washington State in the 4th round over Gilkey, Wilson is a first-round talent who clashed with the new coach. He'll be available.

  • He is quite a talent at wr, but a serious lack of work ethic and character questions....

the Browns are drafting for character and work ethic. I think the Browns will sign a veteran wr....

But after watching the db's at the combine, I think I'd change my db pick in the third round to

Darius Slay, maybe. He ran faster, and may have a better feel for catching the ball....
