Will The Browns Screw This Up?

  • I have a different and perhaps more practical take. You can't expect to win with big holes on the team (vis-a-vis talent) and I think this FO group understands that. You might not win with talent but you certainly will lose without it. So for now, we have to use FA and pay them until draft picks are ready to take over. I see the Browns being active this year, and perhaps they will pay a premium. But those guns for higher should be seen as dwindling over time as the team becomes more and more draft-based. The last group were willing to take 5 years w/o FA's but that's ridiculous. You have to start by fielding a talented team.

Why didn't the Browns get Anquan Boldin??

An effing 6th round pick for him? That's chump change!

Jim Harbaugh is the smartest coach ever, and he just raped the Ravens like he raped the Chiefs.

They couldn't afford to keep Boldin at his current contract number so they go SOMETHING for him. It was either that or cut him and I'm sure Boldin had some say in where he'd end up.

As far as the rest of the thread is concerned the first problem for the Browns is being able to say "Are we going to screw up THIS FA CLASS" building through free agency isn't the answer. You grab a piece here or there but you don't go nuts and the Browns would be stupid to go nuts. A lot of your recent drafts are going to need second contracts at some point. I sure as hell wouldn't tie all that money up in a bunch of free agents.

Hey dimwit, we are changing back to 3-4 and need people to fill holes. We can't possibly be competitive through the draft alone, at least on defense.

Its easy to say that same rhetoric having arguably the best DC the league has ever had on your team's staff for as long as its been. You can be slow in your development of young players, like Worilds, when you have quality in front of them. Well guess what, we don't have a lot of talent to bring 'the project guys' along at such a pace.

A few FAs won't bother the Browns because the money is fine and the draft is lacking a 2nd round pick.

  • I'm always on the fence about the Browns in free agency. On the one hand, a team like ours has to overpay to get top talent. No one in their sane mind who didn't grow up a Browns fan is going to take a discount to come here. On the other hand, there's so many examples of people getting massively overpaid by mediocre teams and not panning out. I think a team has to consider if a guy is just trying to land that fat contract as opposed to really wanting to play hard for a team.

I don't think we expect anybody to take a discount to come here, we just shouldn't overpay. But I agree with your post. FA signing can be just as unsettling as drafting a Brady Quinn. πŸ™‚

  • Looks like we signed our #1 target, so I say no.

  • How is Derek Anderson still unsigned?

not for nothing but they had a list of FA QBs available on bill polian's list and DA was number one.

    not shitting you.

It's not a surprise actually. How many QB's are out there as Free Agents right now? Ryan Fitzpatrick is available now I guess but he didn't exactly tear it up once he got his huge contract. I wouldn't really mind bringing either one of them in to compete with Weeden for the job next season.

I heard this one today and it makes sense...Cassell goes back to New England and then NE trades Mallett. I wouldn't give NE much of anything for a guy who hasn't played but it's an interesting thought.

If they brought in someone to be the new backup, in my mind the trade value of Mallet drops. If they were going to move him they would need to do it before the fact, otherwise have to stick with losing value on drafting him in the first place.

  • Mallet can stay the third or 4th stringer in NE. If NE proposes to bring back Cassell that means that he has learned that Mallet is dumber than a box of rocks and any attempts to trade him are just their way of trying to find a fish stupid enough to swallow the bait.

The question is: is Lombardi that fish.

    Of course he is.
