OK, so now Phil has gone to the 49ers. But let's just hold up on giving him a ring. History shows that it is highly improbable that he will get one. Here is the fate of all Super Bowl losing teams going back to the 1970 merger. Listed first is the year, then the team that lost the SB, then their fate the following year:

1970 Cowboys WON the Super Bowl

1971 Dolphins WON the Super Bowl

1972 Redskins Lost in division round

1973 Vikings Lost the Super Bowl

1974 Vikings Lost in Division round

1975 Cowboys Lost in Division round

1976 Vikings Lost NFC title game

1977 Broncos Lost in Division round

1978 Cowboys Lost in Division round

    1979 Rams Lost Wildcard round

    1980 Eagles Lost Wildcard round

    1981 Bengals Lost Wildcard round

    1982 Dolphins Lost Division round

    1983 Redskins Lost Division round

1984 Dolphins Lost AFC title game

    1985 Pats Lost Division round

    1986 Broncos Lost Super Bowl

1987 Broncos 8-8 no playoffs * first SB loser to fail to make playoffs

    1988 Bengals 8-8 no playoffs

    1989 Broncos 5-11 no playoffs

    1990 Bills Lost Super Bowl

    1991 Bills Lost Super Bowl

    1992 Bills Lost Super Bowl

    1993 Bills 7-9 no playoffs

    1994 Chargers Lost Wildcard round

    1995 Steeler Lost Division round

    1996 Pats Lost Division round

    1997 Packers Lost Wildcard

    1998 Falcons 5-11 no playoffs

    1999 Titans Lost Division round

    2000 Giants 7-9 no playoffs

    2001 Rams 7-9 no playoffs

    2002 Raiders 4-12 no playoffs

    2003 Panthers 7-9 no playoffs

    2004 Eagles 6-10 no playoffs

    2005 Seahawks Lost Division round

    2006 Bears 7-9 no playoffs

2007 Pats 11-5 but no playoffs

    2008 Cardinals Lost Division round

    2009 Colts Lost Wildcard

    2010 Steelers Lost Wildcard

2011 Patriots Lost AFC Title game

    2012 49ers ??????

    Notes:

    1. ONLY the first two SB losers came back the next year to win the SB.

    2. However, the first 17 SB losers (not counting the first 4, I would have to check on them) all still made the playoffs the following year. Not until the -87 Broncos did the SB loser not make the playoffs.

    3. But, since 1998 over half of the SB losers...8 of 14...failed to make the playoffs the following year. Last year when the SB loser Pats made the AFC title game was the first time since the 90s Bills that a SB loser went as far as a conference title game.

    4. So, if this pattern holds true, the 49ers may be in for a rough Super Bowl loser hangover, and Phil Dawson may not get his ring...unless the 49ers can find the magic elixer that has not been found since before probably half of you were born.

Fate of the first 4 SB losers:

    1966 Chiefs 9-5 no playoffs

1967 Raiders Lost AFL title game

    1968 Colts 8-5-1 no playoffs

    1969 Vikings Lost Division round

Note: In 66-69 there were no actual "wildcards". You had to win your conference or division to make the playoffs. The playoff system expanded in 1970 to add more teams. Had a wildcard system been in place as was instituted in 1970 both the '66 Chiefs and '68 Colts would have probably made the playoffs.
