After days of speculation, Carson Palmer was officially traded to the Arizona Cardinals on Tuesday. He may not be the only one on the move.
The Carson Palmer trade to the Arizona Cardinals is finally official after a few days of speculation, rumors and reported "snags."
The trade officially signifies the end of Palmer's Raider's career and what turned out to be a disastrous acquisition for Oakland. The Raiders traded a first- and second-round pick to acquire the former Bengal in 2011. Oakland didn't recoup much value back as they traded Palmer and seventh-round pick to Arizona for a sixth-round pick and a conditional 2014 seventh-round pick. Either way, Oakland is moving on with Matt Flynn while Arizona has a new starting quarterback. SB Nation's Revenge of the Birds and Silver and Black Pride have the deal covered from the Cardinals and Raiders perspectives.
Carson Palmer may not be the only quarterback on the move as a couple of backup quarterbacks could be close to joining new teams. Pat White has not played in the NFL since 2009, but he could be close to getting back into the league. White is reportedly "very likely" to sign with the Washington Redskins. The former second-round pick spent one season with the Miami Dolphins. He cancelled a scheduled visit with the New York Giants, a possible sign that a deal is near.Dan Ciarrocchi of Hogs Haven has more on the possible addition of White and what it means for the 'Skins.
Another potential backup quarterback could be on the move with free agent Tyler Thigpen the leading candidate to backup Russell Wilson in Seattle. The Seahawks are in the market for a backup after their trading former reserve QB, Matt Flynn, to Oakland on Monday. Thigpen spent the last two seasons as the backup in Buffalo. He could be a good fit with the Seahawks due to his familiarity with the read-option offense. Field Gulls has more on the backup situation in Seattle and the possibility of adding Thigpen.
The Jacksonville Jaguars were among the busiest teams on Tuesday as they agreed to a one-year deal with free-agent defensive tackle Sen'Derrick Marks while also hosting free-agent wide receiver Mohamed Massaquoi for a visit. Marks should help bolster a Jacksonville defensive line that is currently thin on experience. Massaquoi could also bolster the Jags' depth currently with little at wide receiver behind Justin Blackmon and Cecil Shorts III.
The Jaguars could also get a boost next season from the return of Maurice Jones-Drew. The starting tailback missed 10 games last season due to a foot injury. He was still in a walking boot in late March, but got out of it recently and began light jogging on Monday. For all of the latest on the Jaguars, head over to Big Cat Country.
Jones-Drew could be on his way to joining the the Jaguars offseason activities, but Chiefs left tackle Brandon Albert isn't expected to participate in Kansas City's offseason workouts. After being franchised by the Chiefs earlier this offseason, Albert said he is staying away from offseason workouts until decisions have been made on his long-term future.
"Until I know my situation with certainty," Albert said, during an appearance on the NFL Network, "I'm going to stay away."
The Chiefs hold the No. 1 pick in the NFL Draft and could potentially select an offensive tackle, making Albert's long-term future, and contract negotiations even more complicated. Arrowhead Pride is your source for complete Chiefs coverage.

I find it interesting that the skins are looking at White. It could be that he is nothing more than camp fodder or they could be in the works to trade cousins to a qb strapped team. Currently they have RGIII, Kirk Cousins, and Rex Grossman as Qb's. If they traded away cousins it would be the perfect time and they would get high value, giving the draft isn't showing much for nfl teams to excited about.

i can't believe we didn't even offer Nnamdi Asomugha a dime. just my opinion, i think the guy will redeem himself this year.
even though there is a good rookie prospect sitting there waiting to be drafted by us in 3 weeks why not take a chance at a one time proven commodity? it would have cost less than to pay a top ten rookie and we could have added maybe a mingo or jones or another projected seek and destroy OLB. or maybe even come up sopp up warmack.
we did address the LB corp in FA but didn't do shit in the defensive secondary.
san fran is going to rock this year.

In actually quite disappointed in our FA activity (or lack thereof).

Well, we came in desperately needing to add quality and depth across the front seven. Done, mostly. Beyond that though, we needed to upgrade CB, OG, TE, FS and probably WR - we can pick players up in the draft, but there's no way we can get 5 starters, especially without a second. So yes, pleased that *something* happened, slightly disappointed more didn't.
-
Everyone gets pissed every year when we don't pull some kind of dream team scenario. Guess what, we just did 5 times more than we did in any of the previous few years. We got two top guys at 2 positions, filled depth at two more. Everyone's pissed cause we didn't throw a lot of money at guys coming off very serious injuries. Why? I had to calm my roommate down the other day when he went on a rant saying that the Browns never do anything in FA. The same guy who was cheering on the first day when we made our two big signings.
We have the draft, we have the first round of player cuts after the draft and at the start of training camp. We are going to be fine.

It is not necessarily a fact that the Browns are by any means done with the FA market. The following free agents, as ranked by ESPN and Scouts Inc. are still out there to be signed. The number next to their name reflects that organizations ranking of them in the entire 2013 FA class:
#8 Karlos Dansby LB
#9 Dwight Freeney LB
#16 Casey Hampton NT
#18 Nick Barnett LB
#21 Brandon Moore OG
#22 Daryl Smith LB
#27 Brian Urlacher LB
#38 Quinten Jammer CB
#41 Quinton Mikell S
#44 Charles Woodson CB/S
#51 James Harrison LB
#54 Brandon Lloyd WR
Others ranked further down:
Shaun Phillips LB
Laurent Robinson WR
Antoine Winfield CB
Sheldon Brown CB
Austin Collie LB
Dawan Landry S
Leroy Hill LB
Gerald Sensabaugh S
and many more.
It is unlikely the Browns will go after long in the tooth types like Urlacher/Harrison/Woodson/Harrison/Winfield but there still may be some room on the roster for a FA to fill some holes. Maybe particularly that veteran WR spot.

Here is the disposition of those artists previously known as Cleveland Browns who have hit the free agent market this offseason:
FB Eddie Williams unsigned
S Ray Ventrone unsigned
RB Brandon Jackson unsigned
QB Josh Johnson, signed by the Bengals
TE Alex Smith unsigned
RB Chris Ogbonnaya, resigned by the Browns
DE Juqua Parker unsigned
LB Scott Fujita unsigned
S Usama Young unsigned
P Reggie Hodges unsigned
LB Kaluka Maiava, signed by the Raiders
LG Chris Gocung unsigned
WR Mohammed Massaquoi unsigned
WR Josh Cribbs unsigned
DE Frostee Rucker, signed by Cardinals
TE Ben Watson, signed by Saints
K Phil Dawson, signed by 49ers
CB Sheldon Brown unsigned
As you can see, other teams have not been beating down the doors for former Browns players.

Says a lot about the quality of our players last year, that!

LG Chris Gocung unsigned
WR Mohammed Massaquoi unsigned
WR Josh Cribbs unsigned

All important contributors to the browns last year or previous years, 4 out of 13 signed by someone else. 5, if you assume cribbs will go somewhere.

And I have little concern about the Browns ability to replace any of them with someone better except perhaps Dawson and Cribbs.

I don't want a dream team. I just want to address the positions of need, namely CB,OLB, FS and G. We missed the boat in every viable starting CB. We missed the boat on every viable starting FS. We addressed OLB. We didnt address G.
We went into free agency needing to fill at least 4 positions. We left it still needing to fill 3. We are not getting three starters out of this draft, especially without a second round pick.

I actually disagree with you. Josh Gordon is technically part of this draft class - but whatever.
There's very few starting-caliber CB's in this draft.. that will probably be Milliner at 6, the only other candidates are Warmack and Jones.
Safety however is extraordinarily deep, the best at that position in a decade. We will be able to grab a starting-caliber FS in round 3.
As for guard, who knows: Draft 3,4 of them in the late rounds and let 'em fight it out, somebody should be able to be better than lauvao.
Can't fix everything all at once, but IMHO everything but guard should be addressed satisfactorily for a while.

I can't see us staying at 6 personally. Banner/Lombardi will want to put their mark on the roster, and a second round pick, ie another starter, would help them do that. Trading down to 12 with Miami (and then potentially again) you could see us taking Austin, then Trufant in the second and picking up a FS or TE in the third. While the O-line could stand to be improved, a guard wouldn't be the big impact play-maker that would be the poster boy for the Lom-Banner-di era.

I agree with harry buffalo above, by the time preseason rolls around I think we will fill quite a few spots via the draft and roster cut down casualties from other teams. Still a lot of time left to make moves to upgrade our roster. This is just the point of the off season where the FO wants to be patient and not jump the gun when they really don't need to.

Semantics. We aren't getting three starters out of the 7 or so players we'll be adding in April.
I agree about this CB class being thin, which really adds to my disappointment. The CB FA market was decently strong and we failed to add anybody of merit. Meanwhile, this draft is riddled with LB talent, yet we address that weakness via FA. It just doesn't make sense.
There weren't many G's in FA that would have been a marked improvement, I fully expect us to draft one.
It just seemed like this was the perfect setup for us to fill every glaring weakness and we fumbled it all over our titties. We could have added a big CB via FA, address OLB either at 6 or traded back and then added it later in the first, and then address G or FS with our next pick. Now it seems we are forced to reach for a CB if we can't trade back or add yet another LB.
Watch us fuck everything up and trade UP to get Smith.

Haslam's clueless ass hiring Banner's hobbit ass, which in turn hired that dumbass Lombardi and letting Heckert walk was the beginning of the end. The the only thing they've done right is hiring Chud and Horton, for Chud brought Norv in an OC. I could have done with Banner's bean counting ways but Lombardi is sure to fuck this team as the dude is a second rate douchebag analyst.
-
Also saving cap to resign key players in the future
-
i mean Asomugha got signed by less than what we'll have to pay millner (if that's what happenes).
no offer? do you really think banner and lombardi are better in player evaluation than harbaugh and his GM?
also, didn't atlanta just cut an OL that has started every game for them in the last 4 years? UH can we bring him in for a lool?
c'mon man!!!

What about OG Brandon Moore, currently of the Jets? Would he be an upgrade?
And there are still some "big name" CBs out there, like Quentin Jammer, Winfield etc. but the Browns do NOT obviously want someone over 30 apparently.
At Safety there is Quintin Mikell....but I don't know his age or if he is a FS or SS.

I'm not worried about the name, I'm more concerned with recent production. Grimes would have been a great upgrade with high potential, yet we dropped the ball. Asomugha came for dirt cheap and it seems like we didnt even make an offer.
